Snorri looked sceptically at all the guards accompanying the carriage. After all, they were armed men approaching the king, whom he had to protect. Good, it seemed to be more about this legation they were supposed to meet. That was a little reassuring. On the other hand, he would certainly not leave his post just because a whole troop of foreign guards thought they wanted to provide protection.

A quick sideways glance at Captain Thymo showed him that he would also want to accompany the carriage directly. So the young guardsman of His Majesty Braga waited until all the high lords and ladies had boarded the carriage and then took up his position at the rear left of the vehicle and fulfilled his duty.

................................................................................Reception and escort in the City of Rome
.....................................................................................by members of the Pontifical Court of Pope Sixtus IV
....................................................................................

Felipe remained a step behind the Queen of Navarre, she was acting as Prefect of the Papal Court and was greeting the new young German king and queen. The Germanic royal couple did not look much older than the Cardinal and his sister, which would make conversation much easier as they rode through the streets of the Eternal City in the Carriage. Although the cardinal did not know them at all, he noted the good manners of the king, gentlemanly, as a true European prince should be, and of his wife, a woman whose intelligence and abilities would no doubt match her dignity and beauty. Felipe bowed his head amicably to them when it was his turn for introductions.

-Welcome to Rome, your majesties. It is a pleasure to receive you in the name of His Holiness on this important and special day, not only for the German kingdom, but for the universality of Aristotelianism.

Felipe allowed the king to kiss his ring, an unusual gesture that did not symbolise submission to the person as some believed, but respect and reverence for the priest's consecrated hands as a servant of God. After a little polite jostling to see which of the two men would enter the carriage last, Felipe finally yielded to Braga's will and took a seat next to his sister. With a wave of his hand the Cardinal ordered the coachmen to draw the curtains of the sumptuous carriage so that the kings could be seen by the Roman citizens, and so that the new arrivals could also behold the grandeur of Rome from the comfort of the goose-feathered seats.

With the crack of the coachman's whip, the six horses pulled the carriage and it began to roll through the streets of Rome, those that had been paved so many centuries ago and that had seen the Germans arrive once as enemies and plunderers, and now as friends and illustrious guests, all together in one faith. The citizens of Rome, always curious about foreign visitors, greeted, applauded and shouted animatedly.

-Your Majesties, greet the Romans! They are very curious and will surely remember this day and tell their grandchildren about it many years from now!

Felipe waved from the carriage window, although he knew that these men, women and children were already very used to seeing priests dressed in red. What they really wanted was novelty, to see visitors from the cold north, where they imagined thick forests in the mist, great castles on the hills, and legends were fantastic tales of the ancient pagan gods.

The papal guard paraded in front of the carriage, and the German retinue behind with all the Roman and German flags flying in the wind as they passed through streets adorned with garlands and coloured banners. Felipe, fulfilling his role as a good host, tried to explain the history of the monuments in front of which they were passing.

-That great elliptical building is the amphitheatre of imperial Rome, they call it the Colosseum. In it there were fierce gladiatorial combats, beasts and even the arena was flooded for real naval battles! Sadly it was also used to massacre slaves and prisoners of war and to martyr the first holy men and women of our faith.

-That monument which rises above the buildings is the Column of Trajan, commissioned by that emperor in the one hundred and thirteenth year of our era to commemorate the conquest of the kingdom of Dacius. On its shaft are chiselled the deeds of the military campaign.

-We are now entering the Piazza del Campidoglio, the administrative centre of the city, where the town hall and the civil courts are located. That is the Palazzo Senatorio, the next is the Palazzo dei Conservatori and finally the Palazzo Nuovo. Just behind those buildings, at the top of that hill is the Basilica of Aracoeli, one of the most important temples in the city.

-Now we are crossing Piazza Navona, another of Rome's great squares. In ancient times this was Domitian's stadium where quadriga and horse races were held. Now it is a beautiful square where the most sumptuous palaces of the nobility, the bankers and the houses of other wealthy citizens are erected. I believe the city council and the Holy See are planning to erect three large fountains, but so far it is only a project for the future.

A while later, the wheels of the carriage and the entire papal and German retinue began to cross the river Tiber over the Ponte Sant'Angelo, in the intimidating shadow of the castle of the same name, military seat and fortress of the popes. In the distance, the great dome of the Basilica of San Titus could already be seen, and its bells began to ring out joyfully in plenum, announcing to the whole of Rome the great event that was about to take place.

----------------------------------------------

It is not every day that I could go to Rome. So, at the invitation, I prepared my belongings to accompany the Grand Duke of Brittany to the coronation of King Braga of Germany. The journey was of some length but welcome after the recent events in our land.

Despite my travels during my runaway, I had never been to Italy, let alone Rome, so it was with some growing excitement that I watched the landscape change as we approached the city.

"This is my first time in Rome, Your Majesty. Did you have the opportunity to go there because of your religious office?"

I was trying to make conversation, not too much but in such a way as not to have an awkward silence either. As any young girl from a noble family was taught to do. At last, we had arrived and after getting ready there was nothing to do but wait to be shown to our assigned place.

He smiles at Yselda.

Oh yes, in another life, I was here the Constable of Rome in charge of the Holy Armies and even the Cardinal Doyen in order to retire to our country for good, I had a palace not very far from here, right next to my first "Roman parish" which was created especially for me Saint-Yves des Bretons, but if the eternal city is magnificent, I never knew how to feel in my place there.

................................................................................Escort in the City of Rome & Arrival to the Basilica
.....................................................................................
....................................................................................

She hoped that the reception offered by the Pontifical Court would be to King Braga's liking, and indeed, that his response confirmed this was a relief to her. Queen Inès smiled and bowed her head to the new arrivals, and after the introductions, she gladly accepted King Braga's chivalrous offer to help her into the carriage. As Inès had given way to Queen Andrine, and she was therefore the next to enter, the Alvarez de Toledo sat next to the consort, so that the two women could converse amicably for the rest of the journey. Happily for all, it was Cardinal Felipe who took it upon himself to explain to them the curiosities of the streets and buildings. The curtains of the carriage, drawn aside, allowed them to see all around them, as well as to be seen; all the limelight was on Braga and Andrine, and therefore, Inès barely smiled at the people who watched them attentively. Discreetly, the Queen of Navarre slipped her hand to the side of the carriage, and extracting a pouch full of coins, offered it to the German Queen so that she could throw them to please the Romans. The city of Rome, for centuries, had enjoyed this kind of gesture from those in the highest positions, and it was seen as an act of charity, and wealth, to share gold with them all. A strange custom perhaps, so Queen Agnes leaned softly towards Queen Andrine, and whispered to her:

- The Romans expect your generosity, and in this way you will help them to celebrate such a memorable day.

As the carriage crossed the Sant'Angello bridge, Inès glanced lightly at the fortress, and began to laugh softly at the thought that she would not be going to the office that day. The carriage's pace slowed gradually then, until they reached the square that housed the Basilica of San Titus, and at a glance, Inès saw that the Furriel Maggiore was there. As she caught a glimpse of him in the distance, her eyes then distinguished the banners of the foreign retinues, and indeed, she recognised those of Navarre as well, which meant that her husband had already arrived. Smiling, delighted to know that everything had gone perfectly, she turned her face towards Braga to congratulate him.

- Your Majesty, today will be a day that many will remember. France, Britain, Castile, Catalonia... many are the kingdoms that have been presented here. I wish with all my heart that every day of your reign will be as joyous as this one. - Then she went on to make the details of protocol.– Now His Eminence and I will descend, so that Cardinal Felipe can take his place around the Holy Father, and I will join my husband to witness your coronation. I would love to introduce him to you, but I am afraid Your Majesties will have to wait here, and leave last, to be seen by all... since your ceremony begins here, King Braga.

Inès looked one last time at the King. Braga was to descend first and make his way to the Holy Father, who would be at the entrance to the basilica, on his gestatorial chair at the top of the stairs. All kings and emperors crowned by the Pope had to kiss his feet, and the Pope would kiss and embrace them afterwards. A ceremonial repeated for centuries.
Wishing them the best of luck for the day, Queen Inès bade them farewell and with a smile still on her face, she descended from the carriage with the help of her brother the Cardinal. The Navarrese retinue joined her at that precise moment, and following their Queen, they all advanced up the stairs to join the Consort's retinue. Inès, with the delicacy of an almond blossom, stretched out her hand to Hector's when she saw him, and with soft steps, took her place at his side.

- My beloved, what a delightful couple the Germans have for kings. His Holiness has honoured me by entrusting me with your reception... I count on being able to present you during the festivities.
But let us go in, we kings and princes must wait inside the basilica.

It was at that moment that Inès distinguished the Cardinal and Grand Duke of Brittany, and the Queen of Navarre greeted him.

- And you are still a point of reference in the Congregation of the Holy Armies, be in no doubt. What a pleasant surprise to see you here, and as Grand Duke of Brittany indeed. My congratulations, again. - Smiling at Cathelineau, but also at Yselda and Soren.– Excuse me, I don't have the pleasure of knowing you, but a woman of your elegance cannot go unnoticed. What a beautiful dress. Is it possible for us to sit close together, and for you to tell me about your seamstresses?

---

The king consort of Aragon and Navarra, accompanied his wife, Queen Mandy I, Queen of Aragon and Navarre, in this coronation ceremony for the King of Germany.
Followed by the Aragonese entourage, they followed the ceremony in silence and greeted the representatives of Castile and Catalonia, allies and neighboring kingdoms to which it was always an honor to share this type of royal ceremonies.
He took the arm of the Queen of Aragon and Navarre and they observed in silence what was happening in such a beautiful basilica.

The Duchess and lady-in-waiting to the Queen of Navarre arrived with her procession. The coronation of a King was not something you could see every sunrise. As a fervent Aristotelian, Lola liked to find herself in holy places. Always following two steps behind the Queen of Navarre, Malemort watched over the grain, watching and making sure that she went for the best and above all that she was perfect in all circumstances. She greeted the faces she knows with a broad smile and a gentle nod.

-------------------------------------

Three steps behind Queen Inés, the Governor of Navarre, accompanied by her husband, the Constable of Navarre, made a point of being present at the coronation. A true delegation of the 4 most important figures of the young but still very much alive Kingdom of High Navarre.

Instinctively the couple, because of their functions, ensured the representation and the security. Each of them had their own role, but they were always together, with eyes everywhere, but with a smile.
Dressed in blue as usual, the tall blonde, the new Marquise of Cortès, did not fail to smile as she passed people, both known and unknown.

The trip to Rome from the PrincipaT of Catalonia had become a regular occurrence for me, the difference being that on this occasion I was accompanied by the Vice Chancellor of the Principat, who stayed at my residence in the Eternal City. It was a refreshing breeze not to find myself alone in that house, not counting the servants, and although the issues of Hispanic primacy had kept me away, my plan was to revisit the Roman corridors, to see if some things had changed or if, on the contrary, some were still protected.

The day of the event that had brought us to the city arrived and so I took Talavera through some streets that would not be so crowded and that would lead us directly to where the ceremony would take place. It had nothing to do with the fact that several soldiers escorted us and cleared the way for us, after all, like every big city, there were also opportunistic thieves. Arriving at the gates, we said goodbye as we each had a role to play, as I made my way to His Holiness, I was able to see the Princess of Ischia di Castro, as well as the Queen of the Kingdom of Aragon and her escort. I laughed a little at that, since only such an event in Rome could bring together two people claiming the same throne for themselves. I looked briefly at Philip and a half-mocking smile appeared on my lips, due to return to Rome to annoy the stiff of the poor Castilian, I was sure he missed me.

Behind the Royal couple, in the company of his wife, Governor of the free and independent Kingdom of High Navarre and Marquise of Cortes, the Bear Constable was discovering the place. Although he had often heard about Rome and the splendour of its buildings, he had not yet had the opportunity to see it with his own eyes. Now he had. And he was not disappointed.

Despite this, he kept a calm and detached air. Representing the Kingdom at the side of their Reyne required that he not look like the village idiot. He would have liked their children to be there, but he understood the impossibility of that. On the other hand, he secretly hoped that it wouldn't take forever because he and the receptions...
