Kalixtus observed the people who approached the throne of Titus and demonstrated their submission to the Pope. It was a spectacle that repeated itself every year, and just like every year, Kalixtus would be among those called forward.

It was one of those spectacular events that would go down in the history books because the Pope was the only mortal being who could command Kalixtus to kneel.

As always, he approached the Pontiff with the grace of a predatory cat. His flowing robes rustled over the marble floor, and there he stood, the Black Pope facing the White Pope on the throne. There was the old tradition of kissing the Pope on the lips, of course, without their tongues touching. If Kalixtus were to succumb to this gesture, at least two clerics would be furious, though for different reasons.

It was better not to risk it, but the smile that crossed the cardinal's face was genuine. And so, the cardinal knelt before the throne of Titus, took the Pope's hand with the ring, and his gaze rested on the aged hands of the Pope and the golden ring on his ring finger. His own hands, with long fingernailes filed into crescent moons, bore the cardinal's ruby ring, and he lifted the Pope's hand to his lips. With the delicacy of a butterfly's wing, the cardinal bestowed a kiss upon the gold of the ring. Then, he guided the Pope's hand to his forehead, and for a moment, the cardinal closed his eyes before speaking with his melodic, dark, almost mystical voice:

"I swear on the Holy Scriptures to faithfully serve with faith, loyalty, and obedience Sixtus IV, Pontiff of the Holy Roman Church and Aristotelian, and all his legitimate successors to come. He released the Pope's hand, looked into the eyes of the Pontiff, and for a moment, one could understand why they called Kalixtus the White Lion. As he rose from his kneeling position with that same elegance, a brief wink or a glimmer in the cardinal's ice-blue eyes was visible, but only for Sixtus to see.
