Matteo si trovava a passeggiare come al suo solito, nel primo meriggio, assieme al suo fedele maggiordomo Ernesto. Giunse in piazza e camminando con passo lento disse al servitore

Sai Ernesto pensavo… chissà se il cardinale Edoardo Borromeo si farà vedere quest’oggi. Vorrei rivederlo per chiedergli di alcune questioni inerenti la fede. Dopo tutti questi anni di studi e la lettura di diversi libri anche all’estero sto riflettendo in maniera profonda su una serie di aspetti della scienza e della fede.

Si avvicinò quindi ad una panchina, all’ombra di una grande quercia ed aggiunse


Aspettiamo un po’ qui.. è abbastanza tranquillo oggi, non c’è il solito chiasso, magari passerà e lo inviteremo a scambiare qualche parola se avrà tempo. È sempre stato una persona molto cortese e disponibile.

Si sedette, poi iniziò a raccontare al maggiordomo

Vedi all’epoca anche io intrapresi quella via… non eravamo moltissimi, e, forse, se avessi continuato oggi non mi preoccuperei di cercar moglie perché sarei almeno arcivescovo.. o proprio cardinale, come il mio amico, presso la curia romana. Comunque… c’est la vie, sono soddisfatto di quanto abbiamo fatto fino ad oggi con l’Ordine ed ora con l’incarico datomi dall’Imperatrice Jade.

Sorrise e, seduto attese in silenzio l’eventuale avvento del cardinale

Dall'alto del Palazzo Arcivescovile, Sua Eminenza Edoardo Borromeo Galli poteva ammirare il cielo di settembre, ancora lindo come quello della stagione estiva, ma già prossimo a volgersi alle intemperie autunnali. Quel giorno, però, vi era ancora un sole caldo e visibile in cielo, perciò decise di scendere in piazza per prendere la leggera brezza tiepida dell'ora nona, sapendo che fosse ormai in declino la calura.

Aiutato dal proprio Segretario, prese la mantella e il cappello a tesa larga e con le proprie vesti porporate discese le scale, giungendo veloce a passeggiare tra i passanti, sgranchendosi le gambe.

Fu così che, passo dopo passo, si trovò a transitare a fianco di una panca, ove vide a riposo colui che sembrava l'amico medico milanese, col quale spesso aveva scambi epistolari.

Il dottore se ne stava seduto alla quiete di quella bella panchina ombreggiata. Osservava i passanti, lontani, quando scorse un abito color porpora. Riconobbe il suo amico cardinale e, quando fu sufficientemente vicino, si alzò in segno di rispetto prima di rivolgergli parola

Salute eminenza. Come state ? è un po’ che non ci incrociamo… attendevo proprio voi sapete

Gli disse rimettendosi a sedere con il volto sereno e sorridente

In questi ultimi tempi, seppur la vita dell’ateneo milanese, l’ordine dei medici e la chiamata dell’imperatrice mi assorbano quasi del tutto ho avuto modo di riflettere su alcuni aspetti della nostra professione… e della vostra !

Ridacchiò un po’ pensando alle numerose occupazioni di un uomo di chiesa del suo rango

Vedete… oramai ho letto numerosi libri di tutti i generi… di filosofia, medicina, fede… pensavo che, in fin dei conti scienza e fede non sono poi così lontane, come qualcuno potrebbe fare credere. Per questo volevo confrontarmi su questi argomenti insieme a voi. E d’altra parte non è un caso che la cultura che abbiamo acquisito sia stata custodita negli anni più nefasti proprio da voi, nelle chiese, nelle cattedrali, nelle abbazie e nei monasteri.

Fece una pausa osservando il suo interlocutore poi riprese

E d’altra parte la vita di ogni giorno ci costringe a pensare in maniera utilitaria e pratica, ai bisogni di ogni giorno ed ai problemi temporali da risolvere… portando a volte a perdere la fede oppure a non applicarsi adeguatamente nelle funzioni… non credete ?

Orbene, ne convengo con voi che fede e scienza medica debbano viaggiare fianco a fianco, come sempre è stato: la prima, per la cura dello spirito e della nostra anima, in rispetto dell'Onnipotente; la seconda, sostenendo le nostre forze nel compiere il nostro dovere nella comunità, addolcendo le intemperie della vita e assistendo il nostro corpo sintanto che l'Altissimo non ci voglia definitivamente chiamare a sé.

Ma come mai questi discorsi, figliolo?

Non vi sembri strano un discorso del genere

rispose quindi al cardinale

mi son trovato molto spesso a pregare in chiesa a Pavia e, quando possibile nei miei frequenti viaggi a Milano, anche in cattedrale. Non è un mistero che la mia città natale non abbia una guida spirituale.. questo rende molto più difficile la cura delle anime ed anche il disbrigo di certe pratiche, tra le altre cose..

Comunque io sono un uomo di lettere, ho la fortuna di poter leggere molti testi

e cacciò dalla tasca un piccolo libro. Aveva le sembianze di un breviario e riportava sulla copertina, piuttosto consunta probabilmente per l’uso eccessivo, una sola parola “Laude”

come questo ed altri presenti nella mia biblioteca personale. Ma, ditemi, voi cosa ne pensate dei mali che ultimamente stanno affliggendo la popolazione ? sembrano una punizione dell’Altissimo per le malefatte di alcuni personaggi e l’odio e l’invidia che circolano di questi tempi nel Ducato…

una pausa poi riprese

L’Altissimo non voglia che voi ne siate mai colpito ! Mi raccomando, avvisatemi subito nel caso in cui questo infausta possibilità dovesse verificarsi.. immagino non abbiate un medico personale presso la vostra residenza milanese.
