    Institution and Regulation of the Gregorian University

    Sixtus Episcopus, Servus Servorum Dei, Ad perpetuam rei memoriam

      ------------------------------------------------

      ----------------.-------------------------------

    Can. 1 : The Pontifical University of Aristotelian Studies, henceforth simply the University, is an educational institution canonically established by the Holy See and consequently charged with the teaching mission of the Universal Church.

    Can. 2 : The University is an academic institution directly bound to the Holy See, in which the studies are cultivated with reverence, love and fidelity towards the Chair of Saint Titus in the service of the mission of the Universal Church.

    Can. 3 : The University is placed under the patronage and tutelage of the most revered Saint Gregory the Great and Saint Gregory VII and is hence colloquially known as the Gregorian University.

    Can. 4 : The seal of the University is described as : Holy Wisdom depicted as a mother holding her child Faith, surmounted by the seal of the Jesuit Order ; on both sides « A.M.D.G. » meaning Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, the motto of the Jesuit Order, and 1467, the year of the foundation of the University ; beneath her the phrase « Sedes Sapientiae » meaning seat of wisdom and « Religioni et bonis artibus » meaning religion and good arts.

    Can. 5 : The University is heir and successor to the tradition of the Roman College; it is entrusted to the Holy Order of Christos’ Star, which embraces teaching as its main mission

    Can. 6 : The University welcomes, both as students and teachers, every faithful and believer, regardless of their language, status or affiliation to any other Religious Order.

    Can. 7 : Altough being a single and universal institution, the University comprises several linguistic branches, one for each geodogmatic zone, established and regulated by their own set of rules.

    Can. 8 : The central management of the University resides in the palace of the Roman College, the main seat of the Univesity. The management of the linguistic branches, although detached, are linked to the central seat.

    Can. 9 : The University has the right to confer degrees having canonical value by the authority of the Holy See.

    Can. 10 : Courses and lessons are standardised and provided in all the languages of the active linguistic branches. The University hosts courses and confers degrees in :
    • Pastorale Prima ;
    • Pastorale Maxima;
    • Theology ;
    • Canon Law ;
    • Ordinary Justice ;
    • Extraordinary Justice ;
    • Professorate ;
    • Administrative Formation ;
    • Secular Formation ;
    • Regular Formation ;
    • Episcopal Formation.

    Can. 11 : Further courses and degrees may be established by decision of the Directive Council and with the approval of the Holy See.

    Can. 12 : The Bishop of Rome supervises the University and appoints its Rector for the daily management of the University.

    Can. 13 : The Directive Council draws up a list of three professors and proposes it to the Supreme Pontiff, who will then appoint the Rector from among the proposed names.

    Can. 14 : The Rector remains in office for life or until his removal by the Supreme Pontiff, on his own initiative or on the proposal of the Directive Council.

    Can. 15 : The Rector, by virtue of his office, presides over, governs and represents the University before the ecclesiastical and civil authorities.

    Can. 16 : The Rector may appoint a Vice-Rector from among the teachers to assist him or accomplish specific tasks within the University.

    Can. 17 : In case of absence of the Rector, the Vice-Rector assumes their duties until a new Rector is appointed.

    Can. 18 : In the accomplishment of his duties, the Rector is assisted by the Directive Council, composed of the Rector, the Vice-Rector and the Deans of the linguistic branches of the University.

    Can. 20: The Directive Council is the collegial advisory and decision-making body that permanently assists the Rector in the governance of the University; it discusses matters concerning the management of the University.

    Can. 19 : The Deans of the linguistic branches of the University are elected by the teachers of the concerned branch and appointed by the Rector on behalf of the Holy See.

    Can. 20 : Teachers are appointed by the Dean of the linguistic branch they applied for with the approval of the Rector and for one or more teachings, provided they possess at least a professorate degree and a degree in the concerned subject.

    Apostolic Constitution for the institution and regulation of the Gregorian University,
    Given in Rome, on the most venerated tomb of Saint Titus Prince of the Apostles, on the twenty-eighth day of the month of December, Saturday, the day of Saint Himerius, Patron of the missionaries, in the year of grace MCDLXVII, the first of Our Pontificate.
