The basilica was decked out in royal blue on that day. At least, this was the predominant colour worn by many of the people composing this assembly, starting with the gentlemen at arms of the royal guard present in front of the façade of the majestic basilica in the image of the ancient temples of Rome at its first glory.

Thus, the royal couple took the steps to reach the narthex and the portals. They did not have to wait very long, the heavy doors of the basilica opened onto the ornate walls, the marbles and sculptures recalling the marvellous history of the Aristotelians. If the king had already seen the beauty of this basilica on several occasions, today it seemed so different to him due to the circumstances of the day. Quite simply Grandiose, and undoubtedly worthy of the solemn ceremony of his coronation.

Gradually, each step on the marble made him aware of his commitment to the Church, but above all of his sacred commitment to the Irish people whom God had entrusted to him to lead them along the right path of peace, justice, prosperity and, he hoped, mass conversion. The Lancastre looked to his beloved wife who for many years had remained his unfailing support, whatever might happen. He could never have imagined this day without her at his side. By the way, he did not fail to breathe a few words to his wife to point out to her how her beauty gave even more life to this basilica by her presence alone.

On the way to the canopy, the Irish sovereign greeted with a smile every face he recognised, especially his handsome children. In the distance, his gaze also observed the throne of majesty and the entire green-clad altar service around it. Two cardinals were already waiting, including Cardinal Della Scala, the Holy See's interlocutor in connection with Ireland.
As the bells of St. Titus rang out, the pages stopped holding the monarch train of the royal mantle when the royal couple arrived in front of the prelates. With the sound of the clash of the golden armour, the king bent his knees on the cushion woven of a pretty cloth with his hands clasped together. He listened to the Latin words spoken by the Cardinals. After having waited the Book of Virtues to be presented to him, the Irishman laid his hand on the holy book and said solemnly:

    - Ego Carlomannus primus, Deo annuente Rex Hiberniae, profiteor et promitto coram Deo Altissimo, et Angelis Ejus, omnia a vobis supradicta observare, ac deinceps legem, justitiam et pacem Ecclesiæ Dei, populoque mihi subjecto pro posse et nosse, facere ac servare.
    Sic me Deus adjuvet.

She had received an invitation a few days earlier from a maiden dressed in the heraldic weapons of the Kingdom of Ireland. The message pleasantly surprised the young marquise, for she did not expect King Karloman to receive the anointing in Rome, and that beautiful coincidence came to her attention. On the appointed day she dressed in a wonderful costume that was a gift from Queen Adelheid, the fabric was so rich that Inés could not even dream of anything better than that. She had not inherited her mother's eccentric taste but she knew how to appreciate the quality of a good tailor.

Dressed in gold and silver, showing that she was the daughter of kings, she walked on the arm of her brother Felipe to the Basilica of St. Titus where the ceremony would take place and in silence, the brothers sat among the guests to witness such a special moment.
As they arrived in a hurry, they did not have the proper opportunity to greet the princes of the Church, but that would be something they would do as soon as they announced the end of the coronation and the beginning of the banquet and dance.

Cardinal Gianvitus came closer to the king and the other celebrant and extended his arms and raised his eyes saying:
«Oremus.
    Let us prey

Loanne had received the letter from his sister a few days earlier and had organized as soon as possible the journey of the little family to Rome. There was not much time left for them to get there, and as the countess’s silhouette was rounded, the trip should be as quiet as possible. They arrived the day before the coronation. The next day the von Riddermark were present on time.

The basilica was splendid and Loanne was impressed. On the arm of her husband Torwen, her sons in front of them, they sat on the benches reserved for the family, welcoming their nephew and nieces with a big smile while Carl and Adel arrived, splendid in their ceremonial outfits. Silent of admiration, Loanne followed the ceremony piously, the sparkling eye.

Hersende had received an invitation for the coronation while she was at the monastery. As soon as she returned, she went to Rome and arrived just in time for the ceremony.

She entered the basilica, impressed by the splendour of the building and the entirely blue decor. She took her place and attended the entrance of the royal couple magnificently dressed.

Felipe smiled when he realized that his sister, dressed in that new sumptuous dress, was looked at by the citizens of Rome on their way to the Basilica of San Titus, which that day had been decorated with garlands of flowers for the coronation of the new king of Ireland. According to his sister, he was a second cousin or uncle of them, the young clergyman had not yet assimilated the extensive genealogical tree of his family. That day, he was not wearing his clerical cassock, but was dressed like any young boy his age; It was strange to dress like that again after his priestly ordination, but his sister had insisted, and he liked to please her. They both entered the great basilica and he allowed her to be carried away by Ines, taking a seat where she wanted. He was not going to take part in the ceremony as an officiant, so he was only there as a guest and spectator of the blessing of the Church to the king who was to be crowned.

He prayed like all people the litany of the saints:

    Kyrie, eléison
    Miserére nobis
    Miserére nobis
    Miserére nobis

    Ora pro nobis
    Ora pro nobis
    Ora pro nobis
    ...

    Kyre, eléison

There, on the carpet, the king had prostrated himself with his whole body. Inside the basilica, voices as if they came from heaven had risen up, and Carl could recognise the litany of the saints. He remained in this way, concentrated and in prayer, until he was asked to stand up again.

A cleric brought the ampulla with the sacred chrism. Cardinal Della Scala distinctly perceived the tension in the air for such a sacred act. He approached the King and dipped two fingers in the holy oil. He touched him three times: on his left humerus, on his chest and finally on his forehead drawing the Aristotelian cross.

Omnipotens Sempiterne Deus, tribue, quaesumus, manibus nostris opem Tuae benedictionis, et huic famulo Tuo Carlomannus quem hodie licet indigni, in Regem sacra unctione delinimus, dignam delibutionis hujus efficaciam et virtutem concede: constitue, Domine, principatum super humerum ejus, ut sit fortis, justus, fidelis, providus, et indefessus regni hujus, et populi Tui gubernator, infidelium expugnator, justitiae cultor, meritorum et demeritorum remunerator, Ecclesiae Tuae sanctae, et fidei aristotelicae defensor, ad decus, et laudem Tui Nominis gloriosi. R. Amen

Almighty and Eternal God, give, we pray You, to our hands the strength of Your blessing, and grant this Your son Carloman whom we anoint today with the royal anointing, the virtue and efficacy of this worthy anointing: form, O Lord, the power on His arm, that He may be strong, just, faithful, provident, and untiring towards His kingdom, be governor of Thy people, fighter of the infidels, scholar of justice, judge of merits and demerits, defender of Thy Holy Church and of the Aristotelian faith, in honour and praise of Thy glorious Name. Amen.

Adelheid, still on his cushion not far from her husband, observed the holy ritual from his place. She listened to the words spoken by the cardinals, and prayed when necessary.

In that moment her heart was filled with pride, love, gratitude to this man who was her half, her husband, and to the church.

It was a great day, for Ireland, for Rome, but above all for the Lancastre family. Because Carloman was the first Irish King to be crowned by Rome, and it was a great event.

She joined everyone else in reciting the litany of saints.

    Kyrie, eléison
Pater de Cœlis Deus, miserére nobis
Aristoteles, vulgátor sapiéntiæ Dei, miserére nobis

The Cardinal approached the king still kneeling and, taking the ceremonial sword from the altar, he took it out, shaking it, and then handed it to him saying:

Amen.
Receive the sword taken from the altar royally granted to you, and ordered for our blessing in defence of the Holy Church of God: so that through it you exercise strength and fairness, destroy the army of injustice, and protect the Holy Church of God and its faithful: help and defend widows and orphans, rebuild what has been destroyed, and keep what has been restored: avenge injustices, confirm good intentions; so that by acting in this way, glorious in the triumph of Virtues and an excellent lover of justice, he deserves to reign without end with the Lord, Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen

Then, taking the sceptre, he handed it to him in his right hand, saying again:

Amen
Receive the sceptre of virtue and truth, which teaches you to take the righteous out of darkness, to frighten the wicked, to teach the way to the erring, to lay hand to those who err, to disperse the proud, to reveal the humble; and may our Lord open the doors to you. May he be a guide for you: and you may deserve in everything to follow Him, and by imitating Him, you love justice and hate iniquity, since the Lord Your God has anointed You, Who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen

When the king knelt on the cushion again, Cardinal Della Scala immediately anointed him with the holy oil. This oil in his eyes had great symbolic value, it was the invisible sign of God that authorised him to guide his people with divine consent. So, at the end of the anointing, the sovereign piously signed himself, saying in a low voice "so be it".

Finally, it was time for the handing over of the regalia previously entrusted to the service by his daughter. He was first given the royal sword with its beautifully decorated scabbard, which he retrieved with his own two hands and tied around his belt. The sovereign also accepted in his hands the majestic royal sceptre topped with the Celtic harp, which he kept preciously in his right hand.

The crown was there, resting on a ruby red cushion. The Cardinal took it with both hands and showed it to the people. Then he approached Carloman and placed it on his head. While reciting the ritual formula, he marked the air with the symbol of the Aristotelian faith.

R. Amen

Receive the crown of the kingdom, which is imposed on your head. In the name of the Most High, Aristotle and Christos. That just as we inwardly are shepherds and rectors of souls, so that outwardly you may always appear as a follower of God, a strenuous defender of His Church against adversity, and a useful rector and a profitable ruler of the kingdom entrusted to you by Him; that you may be crowned, adorned with the gems of virtue, with the prize of eternal happiness among the glorious athletes with our Lord, Who is God and lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen

Still on his knees, the King saw the cardinal's gesture. The most beautiful Jewel of the Royal Treasury was brandished towards the noble assembly, the Royal Crown. The solemn moment finally arrived, he closed his eyes for just a few seconds when the prelate placed the crown on his head. The Lancastre piously signed himself after repeating the "Amen" of the last prayer.

    - Amen.

The Irishman left the cushion on which he was kneeling, as the ceremony had intended, and took possession of his throne, sitting comfortably on it. He placed both arms on the armrests, his right hand still holding the sceptre. The look, not serious but regal, reviewed the people present and in particular his own family. The Lion's heart was filled with the pride that characterized him very well at this glorious and majestic moment. Was it the sparkle of the candles that made his eyes sparkle like that ?

Carloman had taken his place on the throne. The Cardinal proclaimed him king.

Carloman, by the authority of the Most High and the will of the Nation, we crown you King of Ireland!

    VIVAT REX IN ÆTERNUM!

Adelheid followed each gesture of the ceremony, listened to each word. Her gaze did not leave her husband, except to pray she closed her eyelids to recite the words in all piety.

She saw the cardinals in turn handing over the royal insignia to Carl, first of all the sword, the symbol of the defence of religion. Then the sceptre of virtue and truth, surmounted by the Irish harp. Finally, the crown of Ireland, superb on the red velvet cushion, and even more beautiful on the head of the King of Ireland newly crowned by Rome. The queen's consort heart palpitated, drumming loudly in her chest. Emotion was at its height, and she could not hold back the tears of joy that ran down her cheek. She quickly wiped the tear from her right hand before saying these words.

    Long live the King !
