    La parroquia de San Vicente en Vía es una iglesia de la urbe romana situada a intramuros de la ciudad, al oeste de San Titus y del Castel Sant'Angelo en el rione de Trevi. La iglesia original era medieval, datada en el siglo siglo IX y conocida como "Sant'Anastasio de Trivio". A comienzos del siglo XV fue parcialmente demolida y reconstruida en un nuevo estilo arquitectónico que bien puede apreciarse tanto en su fachada como en los interiores. Anteriormente era una parroquia pontificia porque el Palazzo del Quirinale, la antigua residencia del Papa, estaba ubicado en las cercanías; y también porque en la iglesia se conservaron los precordios de los papas, es decir, las vísceras descomponibles que se eliminaban durante el embalsamamiento de los pontífices. Tras su gran renovación, la iglesia se convirtió en parroquia titular para el cardenal-diácono hispánico bajo la nueva advocación de San Vicente.



    The parish church of San Vincenzo in Via is a Roman city church located within the walls, west of San Titus and Castel Sant'Angelo in the Trevi rione. The original church was medieval, dating from the 9th century and known as "Sant'Anastasio de Trivio". At the beginning of the 15th century it was partially demolished and rebuilt in a new architectural style that can be seen in both the façade and the interiors. It was formerly a pontifical parish because the Palazzo del Quirinale, the former pope's residence, was located nearby; and also because the precordium of the popes, i.e. the decomposable viscera removed during the embalming of the pontiffs, was kept in the church. After its major renovation, the church became the titular parish church for the Hispanic cardinal-deacon under the new advocation of St. Vincent.

    Vicente vivió en la Galia romana, en la provincia conocida como Lyon, entre el pueblo de los eduos, una región que hoy llamamos Borgoña. La vida era difícil en aquellos tiempos remotos de nuestra historia, pero su profunda piedad le convirtió en una figura importante y referente en su pueblo. El maíz era difícil de vender, así que lo almacenaba en su granero, como muchos aldeanos. Nadie se moría de hambre, pero sus cuerpos y sus almas rugían a pesar de las numerosas exhortaciones de Vincent a ser pacientes y abnegados.

    A menudo los aldeanos se quejaban en voz alta:

    "¡Pero nos falta fuerza con este maíz que nos alimenta! Nos falta leche o pescado y nuestra inteligencia sufre las consecuencias. ¿Y qué pasa con las verduras que tardan tanto en crecer y la fruta que es imposible de recoger sin un huerto? ¡No somos muy fascinantes!

Sin ser pasivos, podemos estar satisfechos con lo mejor posible.

    Y todos volvieron a su trabajo.

    Un día, mientras se esforzaba por labrar la tierra de su campo, oyó un rumor procedente de la aldea que se hizo más fuerte a medida que un grupo de campesinos se acercaba a él. Sintió su ira, y esta vez supo que las palabras no apaciguarían a sus compañeros de trabajo.

    Les gritó:

    "¡Bien! Ya que queréis cambiar vuestras vidas, y no os conformáis con las que hay en vuestro pueblo, ¡me iré a las colinas vecinas a reflexionar sobre el asunto! Y que me ayude Aristóteles", añadió para sí mismo, en un susurro de fe y esperanza.

    Dejó allí la cosecha de maíz y el carromato y, ante sus atónitos compañeros, comenzó a subir lentamente la colina más cercana. Algunos le miraron con compasión y señalaron ante lo aparentemente absurdo de su gesto, pero Vincent estaba decidido a encontrar algo nuevo. O al menos lo intentaría.

    Era el final del verano: septiembre mostraba toda la flora borgoñona en plena floración, todavía verde o apenas agostada. Cada pareja de animales trabajaba eficiente y felizmente para alimentar, proteger y comunicar los principios de la vida a sus variadas crías. Vincent subió por el frondoso y enmarañado sendero durante un rato, y luego llegó a la cima de la alta colina. Su cima era clara, bastante pedregosa, y finalmente se sentó en una gran piedra plana calentada por el sol. Parecía haber sido colocado allí a propósito por el Altísimo para servir de asiento al escalador solitario. Se quedó sentado durante mucho tiempo sin mirar siquiera al otro lado de la colina. Contempló el paisaje que se extendía a sus pies: cientos de copas erizadas en oscuras agujas en tramos enteros de las colinas de abetos; las nubes reflejaban su paso sobre los bosques, acariciándolos con sus sombras y revelando su esencia.

    Casi al fondo, entre dos pequeñas colinas, se apretujaba el pequeño pueblo, rodeado por la línea suavemente matizada de las pequeñas montañas bañadas por el sol. Unos cuantos penachos de humo ascendían despreocupadamente hacia los cielos benévolos del día. El campanario de la iglesia extendía su divina aguja hacia la alta bóveda del cielo.

    Podría haber permanecido mucho tiempo en la contemplación, que era para él una especie de oración, pero se oyeron pitidos imperiosos y furiosos no muy lejos de él: ¡dos mirlos luchaban entre sí para obtener lo que el otro obviamente quería! Un extraño arbusto crecía en una profunda grieta de la roca, llena de tierra no arcillosa. Sus hojas eran grandes y de color verde brillante, con pequeños frutos redondos y oscuros que colgaban en pesados racimos debajo de ellas. Reconoció lo que parecía uva negra, de la que se hacía un buen vino para los ritos religiosos y las mesas nobles. Estaba más que asombrado, pues siempre había pensado que el vino procedía de viñedos lejanos y que las uvas crecían en los Reinos del Sur.

    ¡Los dos pájaros estaban luchando por el mismo grano!

    "- ¡Ah!" - se dijo a sí mismo, vagamente irritado

    "¡Cuántas de estas pequeñas frutas, y dos pájaros se pelean por un grano! ¡Qué egoístas y codiciosas son a veces las criaturas del Altísimo!

    Pensó en los deseos problemáticos de sus amigos del pueblo. Ahuyentó a los animales y probó las uvas de manera mecánica, y se sorprendió por su sabor cálido y su rico aroma. ¡De repente saltó sorprendido!

    "¿Qué? ¡realmente son uvas!" exclamó en voz alta y con júbilo.

    "Pero si esta vid silvestre crece aquí, ¡qué no daría en nuestras colinas!

    Miró al otro lado de la colina y, efectivamente, muchas enredaderas crecían aquí y allá, revueltas, entre pinos y arbustos diversos. Algunas estaban asfixiadas por el follaje y no daban casi nada, otras eran más bonitas en cuanto a ramas y forma, pero casi carecían de uvas. Se dio cuenta, en particular, de que las plantas más pequeñas daban abundantes frutos. Estos debían haber sido alcanzados por un rayo y tronchados de forma natural.

    Vincent era muy agudo y sensible a todo lo relacionado con las hierbas. ¿No hizo acaso pociones a partir de semillas para los enfermos? Inmediatamente comprendió el principio de la poda y los beneficios que se obtienen de este descubrimiento. Estudió la distancia necesaria entre cada una de las vides del lugar, observando las más bellas, su situación y su configuración. Podría llevar muchas uvas para los habitantes del pueblo. Él les explicaría. Él les enseñaría. ¡Podrían agradecer al Señor su prodigalidad!

    Ni siquiera se le ocurrió que su descubrimiento era también el resultado de escuchar a los aldeanos, de su tenacidad para trabajar por el bien, de su sentido de la observación y, sobre todo, de este precepto sabiamente seguido: "Ayúdate a ti mismo y el cielo te ayudará". Pero él sólo era el instrumento humano del Altísimo y de su propuesta de cultivo.

    Una imagen de campos plantados con multitud de estos pequeños árboles le vino a la mente mientras pensaba en darle las gracias:

    "Alabado sea Aristóteles, cuyo dogma sigo fielmente con aplicación. Es gracias a su forma de pensar al caminar que estoy aquí". dijo agradecido.

    La vid tardó siglos en asentarse de forma provechosa en el Reino, pero la iglesia tuvo su vino para compartirlo en esas ceremonias y ritos religiosos con mayor facilidad. Fue una suerte que los mercaderes de vino no tuviera que viajar lejos para estar disponible la uva en el Reino. El Pueblo fue el primero en cultivar la vid, y lo siguieron haciendo durante mucho tiempo.


      Tres siglos más tarde


    Otro hombre llamado Vincent, descendiente del primero, viajaba por Borgoña a finales de enero, y estaba muy cansado. Se quedó dormido al borde de un viñedo, atando el ronzal de su burro a una gran piedra. Durante su sueño reparador, su burro se escapó y pastó en los brotes jóvenes de varias plantas. Los viticultores que presenciaron la escena llegaron demasiado tarde para detenerlo.

    Al año siguiente, se dieron cuenta de que la viña que el burro había mordisqueado era mucho más productiva que las demás. El burro del Santo había inventado la poda precisa de las viñas. A partir de entonces, la sencilla poda recomendada por Vincent se convirtió en un método de poda regular y cuidadosa, y las uvas crecieron más y mejor.


    Vicente (Vin- Sang, "La Sangre de la Vid") se convirtió en el Patrón de los Viticultores, que en una libación suprema derramó su sangre de su cuerpo torturado, tal como lo hace la uva cuando es aplastada en un lagar.

    - "Si lo hubieras creído, amigo mío, ¡el Estado trabaja en vano!" (escuchado en la taberna)



      San Vicente en la vida de la Iglesia


    San Vicente se celebra generalmente el 22 de enero, el invierno ya está muy avanzado y ha hecho mella, la viña ya no requiere cuidados, y la gente siente la necesidad de reunirse, de reconfortarse mutuamente antes del inicio de los primeros trabajos de viticultura, la poda en particular.

    Es especialmente célebre en Borgoña y Champagne, regiones muy cercanas a él, donde era conocido por muchos.

    Fue diácono y luego archidiácono durante un periodo de su vida en Zaragoza.

    Se le representa en efigie en las procesiones de las fiestas de la vendimia en las ciudades con buenos vinos (27 de septiembre).

Como todas las mañanas, Felipe se acercó hasta su parroquia para confesar antes de las misas. Pero ¿Qué era la confesión y por qué los fieles solían descuidar este sacramento? El joven sacerdote recordaba las clases en el seminario, y en aquel momento aprendió que la confesión era un trabajo complicado y sutil, ya que los fieles a veces tenían reticencias para hablar con un desconocido sobre sus pecados y problemas más íntimos, a pesar de que el sacerdote lo hiciera "in persona Dei". Las ofensas contra Dios, pero también contra los congéneres y las doctrinas de la Iglesia era, en general, desafiar, cuestionar o romper la enseñanza más pura y primera de la Fe: el amor. Por parte del confesor también era un verdadero reto, ya que debía asumir el rol de padre bondadoso que escucha los problemas de sus hijos y por tanto era necesaria una reflexión profunda antes de ayudar a los fieles a abrir su corazón a Dios. As he did every morning, Felipe went to his parish church to hear confessions before mass. But what was confession and why did the faithful often neglect this sacrament? The young priest remembered his seminary classes, and at that time he learned that confession was a complicated and subtle work, as the faithful were sometimes reluctant to talk to a stranger about their sins and most intimate problems, even if the priest did it "in persona Dei". Offences against God, but also against fellow human beings and the doctrines of the Church was, in general, to challenge, question or break the purest and first teaching of the Faith: love. Felipe's first Mass in the parish of St. Vincent, the first time he had met and celebrated with his acolytes: new faces who were not used to praying together, but each one of them knew his place perfectly, because if the Church was universal, so was its liturgy. It was always a struggle to get your bearings in Rome, and every fledgling visitor always had to work very hard to find a path to the hottest and most congested places of the eternal city: whether it was the way to a holy dicastery, the Pontifical University or the immense Roman library. Actually, several times he had promised to himself to abandon this pure form of frivolousness, after his ordination, but he had never been able to go that far; for he has always felt that dark tinted clothes matched so perfectly well with his strangely unique midnight black colored eyes: oh, vanity of vanities!
And behold, all of the bells of the various wonderful churches that were all around him began to ring loudly, calling their faithful to their respective Sunday services:


“I’d better be on my way”

He said to himself before setting out on what he believed was the right path for the Church. He did not have to go far to realize that he was right, because after just taking a few steps, he managed to eavesdrop on the conversation of two confreres who were talking about the Sunday service of the Church of his interest, to which they too were headed.

“Good, this way I won’t need to ask anyone for directions”

You know, he did not think that out of shyness: grim appearances were not the only special feature of that man, he never genuinely asked anyone for help, if he could avoid it, and that starting from one of the lessons of life that his beloved father Gregorio used to repeat to him for every day of the whole time that he was alive: to never accept free aid from anyone, but to always overcome difficulties with his own strength, ‘cause that is what a man does! After his death, Doriano, who adored his father with boundless love, with love so deep for which he decided to even add his name to his own after his passing, took this teaching so dear to the father to the extreme consequences, holding it in his heart like if it was a real and true testament that he had wanted to leave him, even if not even for a minute, the father had intended that any form of help from others should be refused indiscriminately; but such is the power of grief, which changes people so much, to the point of encouraging them to do anything to honor their loved ones, in a desperate try in feeling them every day still close to them.

He arrived at the Church, as magnificent as any others that could be seen in Rome, and after greeting the Lord by kneeling in front of the high altar, he went to the sacristy, where he announced himself to the minister who was guarding the door, in the attempt of avoiding unwanted intrusions at the presence of the eminent cardinal, who obviously was already inside. In the meantime, he reasoned on how that Cardinal with whom in past days he had maintained such a thick correspondence with regard to the preparation of that day’s Mass, would look like: according to the rumors of the people, all he knew about him was that he was very young. But certainly, it was not only that what was occupying his thoughts, he wasn’t on a courtesy visit, for afterwards he had to accompany that same cardinal in the following celebration; but in a sense, he could not say to be very excited, it was still a matter that by now he could say to know to perfection, the liturgy, and for this he was very calm. But to his feelings certainly did not escape the anxieties of what would have been his first time ever in managing a celebration as an assistant priest alongside a devout prince of the Church; but indeed every first time brought with it some anxieties, after all we are just fragile human beings, but it’s for this same reason that they’re also those moments of our life that we carry dearest in our memories; Doriano certainly remembered them all in a very vivid way: his first service at the altar, his first time in a tavern, his first... well, the reader can guess.
The doors opened, and with it the priest realized what he had already known for a long time: his Eminence Felipe really was very young, as well as a surprisingly charming and delightful lad. He approached him with his head down, stopping a few steps from him to kneel before him and kiss his ring, by letting the palm of his hand gently brush against his own. He got up only after he had received permission and simply said:


“Your most reverend Eminence, I am honored and delighted to make your acquaintance by finally meeting your blessed dignity in person. Let me get right to work”

As a good master of ceremonies, he called the extra omnes, and made sure that he was left alone with the cardinal, to help him to get dressed with the sacred vestments that had already been prepared for that occasion. He then recalled all the ministers to the sacristy so that they could also get dressed, together with him, who obviously, since he had not been called to concelebrate, but to attend as a deacon, only wore the surplice.

“Boy, start breaking incense grains”

He ordered to one of the young ministers present there, as he used to do at every celebration in Verona for his young collaborators. But he was surprised to see that the boy, however, did not pay him the slightest attention, and did not even seem to seek his guidance, indeed he, in all response, turned to his address with a half cheeky smile, showing in his hand the incense boat with the grains of incense that he had already prepared: there was nothing to say, you couldn’t expect anything less from the entourage of a cardinal. "Oh, this is ought to be good”, he thought to himself.

After the necessary preparations, and after everyone set themselves in their places the sound of the bells set the procession in motion, which was followed by Doriano at the right side of the cardinal, according to the ceremonial. Upon reaching the altar, he went to the left of the throne and stood still, while his Eminence Felipe officiated the introductory rites in front of the Altar, having at his side the older acolyte. At the Confiteor he joined his voice to those of the assembly:


“Confíteor Deo Omnipoténti, beáto Aristóteli Prophétæ, beáto Christo Prophétæ, sanctis Archángelis, beáto Tito Apostólo, ómnibus Sanctis, et tibi, pater, quia peccávi nimis cogitatióne, verbo et ópere: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea máxima culpa. Ideo precor beátum Aristótelem Prophétam, beátum Christum Prophétam, sanctos Archángelos, beátum Titum Apostólum, omnes Sanctos, et te, pater, oráre pro me ad Dóminum Deum nostrum. Amen”

He bowed his head as the celebrant bestowed the absolution for then turning to call to himself the incense bearer, who... had already come close to him, of course, always with a cheeky smile on his face, along with him came the thurifer, who passed the thurible into his hands, so that he could approach the altar together with the incense bearer and the celebrant could insert and bless the incense in the thurible and take it for himself for the continuation of the Mass.

The cardinal waited patiently as the censer was passed from the acolyte to Doron, and both of them approached the officiant. He might have smiled at the prefect, whom he was beginning to take a liking to, since Felipe was a laughing boy and loved a good sense of humour, but when he officiated at the liturgy, his face became a waxen mask, ceremonious, reverential. - Ab Illo benedicáris, in Cujus honóre cremáberis - he blessed the incense, and then with the little spoon he took some incense and threw it into the ember inside the turibulum, and quickly the white, aromatic smoke began to rise. Then the cardinal took the turibulum and incensed the altar at its corners and in the centre. When he had finished, he returned the censer to Doron so that he could do the same for the congregation.

Felipe then addressed the faithful, saying:

Dóminus vobíscum.

As dense clouds of smoke were beginning to spread throughout the building till to its mighty and magnificent cross-vaulted ceiling he raised his arms for the passage of the thurible in the hands of the celebrant: in his left hand he held the chains on which the censer was hanging, from their end, and with the right hand instead, he was helding the same chains joined together, near the cane that was sending out such a thick smoke that already during the few istants of this exchange it had begun to kidnap in the fog the two men who were standing facing one another. Now that his Eminence Felipe had received the censer, Doriano bent his head to the celebrant and turned to the altar only after he first had directed the censer towards the same. While waiting for the end of the incensation with his hands clasped together in front of his face, taking care to only join the first two fingers of his hands, he could not help but think what a joy it was to make the passage of the censer in the manner prescribed by the ceremonial for once, since his altar boys, too little and still too inexperienced to be able to respect every detail to the letter, whenever that moment of the celebration came, constantly offered him the most improbable poses: well, as a good liturgist, his attention to detail was maniacal... probably a formation defect of his classical education that led him to be heavily influenced in his studies by the latin authors to whom he was so passionate to the point of being brought to share their rigid Roman juridical mentality that, among other things, nourished such an heavy obsession for orthodoxy and for the validity of the liturgy that in pagan cults there even existed prompters for the priest - 'cause even words were essential to make the cult valid.

When His Eminence was over, the thurible returned to his hands, in the reverse way to how he had delivered it before, so that he could incense the celebrant, too. Then the acolyte approached them too so that the deacon could be free to follow the continuation of the celebration in a retired position with respect to the cardinal, who had begun to turn to the assembly for the community prayers. Although these too were part of the ritual formalism so loved by Doriano, the words of the blond cardinal seemed to come out of his mouth in the most spontaneous way possible, as if they were true prayers born from his heart, under the apparent eager impulse to offer himself in communion with God and through Him with all those present, who certainly, in that moment, were not impassive in front of the strength and naturalness of the words of his Eminence which flowed effortlessly through the whole cathedral like waves crashing on a beach. It was only at the end of these orations that the chorus master, who had already looked away from the service shortly before His Eminence finished speaking, motioned to the singers to stand up to intone the alleluia chorus.

While the voice of the choir, whose echo were dispersing throughout the cathedral, gathered the hearts of those present for one of the most important moments during the liturgical celebration, the magister cerimoniarum approached the celebrant to receive his blessing so that the Lord could be in his heart and on his lips, to worthily and fitly proclaim the Book of Virtues, which passage, that would be read as part of that service, had been prepared on the Altar, leaning against the tabernacle:

"Jube, domine, benedícere"

Upon the blessing, he kissed the hand of the celebrant, in sign of loyalty to God, who through him acted to bestow the heavenly blessings, and received the Sacred Book after a deep bow, which, holding it high, he carried in front of the pulpit, moving slowly, so that the ministers who were carrying the candles and the censer had time to take a stand in front of it. He ascended the ambo, resting the Book on it, while he closed his eyes, concentrating, with all his being, on the melodious singing of the choir that had just started again: even music was an extremely essential part of the liturgy not to be neglected, it was important above all to specially emphasize the effectiveness that the liturgy must have in the mind of the believer when he takes part in it. He opened his eyes after a couple of minutes, seeing in front of him the ministers just placed in front of the benches. He then took the Book of Virtues in his hands and lifted it up, showing it to all of the faithful taking up the right time that the acolyte needed to proper incense towards it thrice. And so, he signed the Book with the thumb of the right hand, and began reading with joined hands:

"Lectio Vitæ Secúndi Prophétæ"

    Natchiachia poured the wine into Christos’s cup, and asked him: “Teacher, I am in pain with a deep torment of the heart. I would like to follow you in your lesson, but I love a man who lives here named Yhonny, I love him with a pure love, sparkling like diamond… What says Aristotle on this question and what must I do? ”

    Christos answered her: “When two beings share a pure love and they wish to perpetuate our species by procreation, God allows them, by the sacrament of the marriage, to live their love. This so pure love, experienced in virtue, glorifies God, because He is love and the love by which humanity exists is the most beautiful homage that can be made to him. But, like baptism, marriage is a commitment for life, Natchiachia, judiciously selected, because in the faith that you and Yhonny will have married by, you will not be able to any more to withdraw from it. ”

    And these last words struck those assembled with astonishment, because the time period was rife with inconstancy… Natchiachia began again: “But, Master, will we be strong enough to respect this choice and to live without sinning?”

    Then, Christos answered: “Know you that humans doubt by nature, and that the love which they hold for God and their neighbors can know risk as much as anything else in life. But the virtuous life is an ideal toward which man must tend. And, on his way, he can be helped by prayer. The prayer can indeed be the means for reinforcing this love when necessary. Do not forget, either, the power of mercy, which is granted thanks to sincere repentance.”


With this, he raised the Holy Scriptures one last time upwards, bringing them to the throne, so that the cardinal could give thanks and kiss them. He then placed it back on the altar, bowing before it one last time, and went to finally sit at his own chair to hear the subsequent solemn sermon.

Felipe noticed that Doriano's every movement and word seemed to be exact, memorised and perfectly executed, without any inaccuracy. He was glad at that moment to have had him as a deacon, but also as a master of ceremonies. Every priest learned through time and devotion that the liturgy was one of the most important pillars of religion, because it was the most tangible moment of faith, when the connection between the mundane and the divine most materialised. The glow of the candles, the smell of incense and the delicious chanting of the psalms were those elements that opened the portal to the divine, it was like feeling a communion with the heavenly hierarchy, and finally, with the Prophets and the Almighty Himself. After the deacon's blessing, one of the acolytes removed the mitre from his head: it was time to listen to the reading. The young cardinal closed his eyes so that nothing could distract him and meditated on the words he would say in the homily.

The deacon's words reverberated in the high vaults of the temple, while all those gathered were silent and listened to the texts of the life of Christos according to Samoth. He knew very well that reading from the thirteenth chapter, when the girl, imbued with pure love, approaches Christos and asks him about her love for the man in the village. The Prophet's answers were prescient and marked the beginning of the sacrament of marriage, a key event for the Church and for the way the faithful themselves understood their lives.

When the reading was finished, Felipe kissed the Book of Virtues and said:
-Per hæc sancta scripta deleántur nostra delícta-, he received the mitre again. Then he ascended the steps of the pulpit and took hold of the wooden railing to look down on the faithful. He closed his eyes for a second and took a deep breath before beginning his homily:

Dear brothers and sisters - he clarified his voice - What a beautiful reading we have just heard, and what an important one. Samoth tells us how a young woman, in love, comes to Christos and asks for his advice: I want to follow you, but what should I do with the love I feel for another person? Love is the pure essence of God, the motive force of his creation, his teaching and the tool for salvation. Love for God is the purest love, the one that Natchiachia had and why she wanted to be a follower of Christos. But she realised that she also loved a young man from her village, she felt a similar but somewhat different love for him: a human and not a divine love, which urged her to share her life with that young man. Christos replies that she can continue to love God, and also love this man, and that the fruit of this love will become flesh, his offspring, the living offering of love for God: the children. It is a very important reading, because Christos institutes for us at that moment the sacrament of marriage. And we must not take these words lightly, for marriage is a lifelong commitment, we must know how to choose our life partners well, and not let ourselves be carried away by a mere passing whim. Only through a marriage blessed by God can a true love blossom that transcends our bodies and is perpetuated in our souls after our death. When you are with your fiancé or fiancée, look into his or her eyes and think clearly whether that love is reciprocated, is sincere and is pure beyond the mere desire of the flesh. If the answer is yes, you will have gained a living treasure, you will have discovered a part of that Love which is innate in human nature, God's most precious gift. Only before God is the union of man and woman possible, for only before Him does it open like a fragrant flower at the coming of spring. Be constant in your life to preserve such love, live it in the way of God's salvation, and you will be repaid with true happiness, and not with the false satisfaction of worldly whims.



When he had finished his homily, and wishing that all the faithful had understood his words, he descended the steps of the pulpit stairs and went back to the altar. One of the acolytes took the miter and addressed the faithful again:Dear brothers, let us now pray the universal prayer, the one we all said at our baptism, which reminds us of our fidelity and love for God and his Church.

He stepped forward a couple of paces and stood in front of the altar, in the centre, and raising his hands and joining them together, he began the prayer:

Inside was the bread of friendship, a baked loaf with a cross stamped on the top. Then a bell rings three times while the cardinal makes the sign of the cross: - Súscipe, sancte Pater, Omnípotens Ætérne Deus, hunc panem, quem ego indígnus fámulus Tuus óffero Tibi Deo meo vivo et vero, pro reconciliatiónem fratrum, signum amicítiæ Tuæ, qua dimíttit innumerábilia peccáta, et offesiónes, et negligéntias mea, et ómnium circustátium, sed et ómnium fidélium aristotelicórum: ut mihi et illis profíciat ad salútem in vitam ætérnam. Felipe then places the ciborium on the emerald silk corporal and then received again the thurible from the deacon and with it blessed the bread while saying: - Incénsum istud a Te benedíctum ascéndat ad Te, Dómine, et descéndat super nos misericórdia Tua.- Immediately he also blesses the altar and then the deacon.

Then, joining hands on the altar and bowed, he recites: In spíritu humilitátis et in ánimo contríto suscipiámur a Te, Dómine: veni, Sanctifiátor Ætérne Deus, et béne+dic hoc sacrifícium, Tuo Sancto Nómini preparátum, ob memóriam Prophétæ Tui.

At that moment the choir finishes singing the Sanctus and he prays in secret: Dómine, secúndus Prophéta Tuus Christus dixit: "Altíssimum orántes, amicítiae pánem vinúmque, córporis sanguinísque imágines, consecráte, ne úmquam sacrifícium meum pro vobis obliviscámini. The young cardinal, at the most sacred moment of the liturgy, opens the ciborium. Then, with his head bowed, he carefully takes a piece of the sanctified food with his left hand while holding his right hand on his breast, and with devotion and humility says: -Dómine, non sum dignus-. And he continues: -Panis amicítiæ custódiat ánimam meam in vitam ætérnam.

Then, bowing slightly, he puts the small piece of blessed bread in his mouth. Then he straightens up, joins his hands and remains silent for a few seconds to meditate.

From his place, he listened attentively to the entire homily of the cardinal: powerful words that aimed to stir consciences on what is the most perfect human image through which we can describe the mystery of God: Spousal Love. Love, in itself, is certainly the most suitable reality for being able to speak about God, since that alone may be the perfect synthesis, the deepest heart of the Mystery of God, which always, in His work, is driven by this one intentionality: it is out of love that God created the world, it is out of love that he revealed himself to men and always because of the love of God, man can today be said to be saved from the foul work of the prince of the world, the Nameless Creature, through Christos' sacrifice, His beloved Prophet. And was not that community of life that was created through marriage as the very expression of a couple that loves and generates life a true living sculpture capable of manifesting the God, creator and saviour? On these things he reflected, occasionally giving quick glimpses towards the first benches of the Church, from which not infrequently could be heard the annoying chatter of some spectators, the which, as soon as the various culprits came in contact with the midnight black eyes of the prelate immediately subsided: not certainly for the authority behind that man, who was nothing more than a simple priest, but for the shame and embarrassment from which they felt immediately oppressed, since, in their hearts, they knew perfectly well the reason for which they had almost competed to sit at the very first places of the Church, in order to be spotted more easily by the eminent Cardinal: if this is your only futile motivation to be in the presence of God, at least try to pretend to give a damn!

At the end of the homily he stood up, and accompanied the celebrant to the throne, standing on his right, while His Eminence Felipe exhorted all those present to join their voices in chorus for the profession of the solemn symbol of faith that put together all the truths revealed by and for the love of the Father, in his goodness and wisdom, to all His children. This moment, that obviously not by chance was placed right in the middle of the liturgy was the very heart of the celebration, because it was through it that one could truly grasp the true essence of the ecclesial community, what it meant to be a Church as a single body united by the one true faith that together invokes His Father. Indeed, the Church can not be identified with its own ministers, which aren't even remotely the absolute protagonists of her life and liturgy, but with the whole community, which should always celebrate as an orchestra, where all contribute to the performance of a symphony in an active and complementary way. The whole community is the subject, and so the community-based component of the faith and liturgical life of the Church is absolutely necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the cultic act, since the invocations addressed to God are not effective only because they are accomplished by certain rites, no, it is not like that, is not magic we're talking about, but because that rite is the expression of an assembly that celebrates. Something that heretics and pagans, deceived by the false doctrines that they follow and teach, will never understand. May God glorify all those who as of today continue to counter and oppose these vile teachings and the men inspired by the Wicked One that spread them... all except the ONE, he who has no need at all of God’s graces and help, since the Lord has already granted HIM a place on this very earth from where HE can already look at his glory directly, eye to eye, by the merits of his inhuman words and accomplishments that he has been gathering throughout his whole life since the very day of his birth:

While he too was proudly expressing his faith together with the whole congregation, for once in his life, he let himself be briefly distracted by the last thought that he had had, that compelled him, in an effort to contain a strange excitement that was starting to electrocute all the limbs of his whole body, to bring his fingers close to his mouth, sweetly running them on his lips, to let it go out a deep sigh of relief... never had an action so automatic and immediate as the recitation of the Creed seemed so arduous before... nevertheless he ended it as if nothing had happened; the sudden eruption of the ethereal chant of the choir of the sanctus was finally able to bring him back from heaven to earth.

Shortly before the end of the chant, Doriano had already moved from his spot to go fetch the ciborium, which he handed to the cardinal for the moment of the consacration, that was inaugurated by the three bell sounds. He motioned for the congregation to kneel, while he alone stood to the right of the celebrant and behind him, following the Offer with his eyes. After the first invocation he took the thurible, received by the acolyte who, having risen to his feet, had just approached the altar, and handed it to His Eminence so that he could incense the altar and the deacon assistant, who, upon receiving the blessing, took the censer back into his own hands and incensed the various ministers by order, so the acolytes first and the altar boys at the end. The censer remained in his hands until the end of the consecration, when the acolyte approached him one more time to remove that burden from him so that he first could be properly communicated by the Cardinal, who went then on in sharing the offer with the other ministers and the faithful, while Doriano, just before the end of the distribution, to which he too took part together with the celebrant, left the altar to place himself on the pulpit, but not before having obviously instructed the acolyte to accompany his Eminence in the subsequent purification of the liturgical objects, once the Communion was truly over. And when the cardinal returned to the throne, waiting for the end of such ritual purification, his standing up was the signal for Doriano to begin the final chant:



"Ite, Missa est"
Go forth, the mass is ended

Now only the words of the lovely cardinal were expected by the congregation in order to put an end to the current reunion of that assembly gathered in the name of the Lord.

Felipe had given the bread of friendship to the parishioners with the help of the deacon. It was not a trivial gesture: the eating of the bread was at the heart of the liturgy, symbolising on the one hand the material union between the faithful who were part of the community, of the same church, of the same Faith; but also the mystical union with God and the Prophets.

After communion, the Ciborium was placed in the tabernacle and then the Cardinal bowed in the centre of the altar. With folded hands on his breast, he said a few words in secret, praying that the blessing of the bread might have been a pleasing gift to God:
- Pláceat Tibi, Dómine, obséquium servitútis meæ: et præsta; ut sacrifícium, quod óculis Tuæ majestátis idígnus óbtuli, Tibi sit acceptábile, mihíque et ómnibus, pro quibus illud óbtuli, sit, Te miseránte, propitiábile. Qui vivis et regnas per ómnia sæcula sæculórum. Amen

Then, raising his voice so that the faithful could hear him, he said:
-Pax vobis
R/Et cum spiritu tuo

Then the young cardinal kissed the altar with great respect and one of the acolytes placed the mitre back on his head. Then he continued with the conclusion of the Mass:

He raised his eyes, then his hands and joined them, while bowing his head. Finally he blesed the faithful:

He made the sign of the cross three times in the air solemnly with his hands covered with green chirothecae. Then a final bow to the altar and turned to the faithful as the procession, led by the cross, started its way back to the sacristy.

The choir began to sing "Te Deum" accompanied by the organ. The mass was over:

As the last last blessing was spoken, the deacon moved from the pulpit in front of the altar, directing the descent of the ministers along the steps of the altar, who, like brave little puppets, descended towards the central nave flowing into it like streams diving along a riverbed, while he, from his position, was above all of them controlling their every movement... as the master puppeteer. In front of the procession marched the bearers of candles that accompanied the minister in the center who carried the Aristotelian cross, behind them there was the thurifer, that opened the way for the passage of the acolyte that carried the Book of Virtues that was going after him and then the various acolytes, ministers and altar boys, according to order and rank. When they all came down from the altar, and the only ones that remained thereon were Doriano and the cardinal, to whom he has had his back the whole time, the deacon assistant clapped his hands forcefully once, so that the sound could ring throughout the cathedral: this was the signal for all the pawns to stop their pace to allow the king to make his own move. At this point, in fact, Doriano turned his body towards the celebrant and bowed to the throne, from which the cardinal, who had followed all this maneuver while standing still, moved to reach his position... and here the young priest made a small mistake, breaking the bow to welcome the arrival of the Cardinal at his side with a kind look and a hint of smile... well, it wasn’t such a big mistake in the end, considering that in that moment his face was hidden from the whole assembly, and liturgical theology does not teach us perhaps the need to participate to the celebrations by also giving freedom of expression to our own inner feelings of eternal love for God and our brothers? A small futile justification that he just turned to himself in that moment... that had been a full-blown error of which he would then have had the opportunity to repent as soon as he got back to his office to take stock of that celebration.

With the cardinal at his side, they both bowed to the altar one more time, and then, with the same mastery of an opera dance pair, they simultaneously turned to the central nave and walked down the stairs as one body, while the cantors began to sing the Te Deum, sign for the procession to start moving again, this time, with the Cardinal as its tail, at whose side Doriano kept standing all the way from the central nave to the sacristy, taking care to look all the time only in front of him, mindful of the mistake just made: avoiding in this way to cross the gaze of the cardinal, to whom he would surely have addressed a sweet smile of too disrespectful complicity, given the circumstances, and at the same time also the curious and oppressive looks of those present, who were still speculating about the identity of that minister who had never abandoned for a moment the side of His Eminence.

Back in the sacristy, only the ministers who were bringing with them the liturgical objects entered first, in order to put them in their place, to then immediately get out, closing the door behind them, so that his Eminence Felipe could be alone with the deacon to free himself from the weight of all the garments he was wearing, helped by his assistant. And then Doriano opened the door again so that everyone could be allowed to undress and put back on their clothes, himself included. While he was getting dressed, a very young boy approached him from behind, pulling him by the cassock. Doriano turned to see who it was and... lo and behold, it was the cocky boy from before who carried the incense boat:


"Dann, Father... - he had a very clear german accent - was I a good boy?"

Although there were clear tones of challenge and provocation in that question, the priest chose to ignore them completely, by addressing him a peaceful smile and in even trying to answer him by resorting to the use of those few words that he mastered of that wonderful language:

"Ja, du warst wunder..."

But he could not complete the sentence of his courteous attempt to address his interlocutor in his native language, who, as soon as he heard his ridiculous pronunciation, sprang his eyes out and burst out laughing in front of him. But not even this further failure of his, in respecting the hierarchy, managed to upset him, after all, it was only a child that we're talking about. Nevertheless, it seems that the young man’s childishness had managed to pull out some childish spirit of his own, since he decided to play a little dirty trick on him, too. He, in fact, approached the child, and lowered himself to him, leaning on his knees, so that he could be able to be at his height, and said:

"Yes.. my boy, your execution was indeed impeccable... and I also trust that, with such focus to details, you must have also took notice of the special closeness that I share with His Eminence. I’ll be sure to speak very highly of you to him."

After having addressed these words to him, remaining always with his face close to his, he turned to him the most malignant smile that he could show off, giving clear display of his hideously sharp canines: a rare birthmark that so often was able to stimulate the suggestion of superstitious fools, and because of which, he always forced himself not to smile very broadly, unless he was at the presence of close friends, that he was familiar with; which, in fact was received by the boy with an expression of sheer horror, that slowly, in the time that he saw the prelate go away to greet the cardinal, made its way to a mask of pure hatred. But Doriano did not really think to go through, not even for an istant, to what his veiled threat seemed to hint; indeed, while exchanging with the cardinal some lovely words of farewell, he really spoke very well of that altar boy, suggesting even an immature promotion for him. After greeting the cardinal, he walked towards the exit of the sacristy, passing by the altar boy, who was still motionless, giving him a slight pat on the shoulder:

"Bye"

Was his last word heard from that place, as he abandoned it to return to his own affairs.

Ash Wednesday was the day that marked the beginning of Lent, forty days of preparation for Easter in which the Aristotelian faithful began a period of special abstinence, moderation and personal contemplation of the Aristotelian virtues. For this reason, an informative message had been nailed to the door of the parish of San Vincenzo, because every year it was important to remind everyone of the importance and particularities of this time in the liturgical calendar:

    by the Congregation for the Dissemination of the Faith

    [Decree]

    Food restrictions:
    • Only one satisfying meal a day.
    • Abstain from meat.
    • Abstention from luxury products.
    • Allowed: Cereal products, fruit, vegetables, fish and milk.


    Social interactions:
      Public celebrations and dances, balls, banquets, as well as all kinds of amusements such as going to the theatre, dance, games, etc. are to be drastically reduced, avoided if possible, and if so, then only on a small scale.


    Misericordia:
      During Lent, the time is dedicated to clearing up our sins around ourselves, to come back into purity with God and His community, and to celebrate the Easter festival in a pure and reflective way. Therefore we have the following guideline:
      • Observance with the Aristotelian prayer times
      • Observance of the Benedictine rules of life
      • Observance of the duty to worship
      • Giving of charity
      • Repentance, confession and atonement for sins
      • Mercy and compassion towards his fellow men


    Prayer:
      Whoever wants to find himself must turn his gaze to God and this is done through daily, multiple prayers. God works in us, around us and through us. This balance is purified by the Lent and we find back to inner harmony and become better people, because we follow the virtues on the path of God who leads us to the eternal solar paradise.

      That in observance of Holy Lent, throughout the period of the same, in all the churches, cathedrals, basilicas and chapels of every place on which the embrace of the Mother Church extends, the following liturgical norms must be observed:
      • All sacred gold furnishings, such as candelabras, stoups and aspergillums, thuribles, chalices, pyxes and patens, must be replaced with silver equivalents.
      • All flowers must be removed.
      • The organ must be silent: the singing will therefore be a cappella.


      These rules can be exceptionally derogated only on the occasion of the celebration of a sacrament or a feast of the 1st class.


    Addition:
      Excluded from the food regulations are: pregnant women, wet nurses, physically hard working people and soldiers.
      A distinction must be made between these fasting rules:

Preparations for the beginning of Lent had begun two days earlier: the sacristy had been crowded with people working tirelessly. The liturgical vestments in purple, the colour of penance, were sewn, cleaned and ironed ; all the flowers in the church that were usually offered to the images of the saints in the side chapels had been removed; the liturgical instruments such as the ciborium, censer, etc. and even the usual golden candlesticks and altar cross had been replaced by silver ones: the altar boys had cleaned it with lemon, vinegar and salt to obtain the best shine. Even the marble floor and furniture had been polished with wax. The whole church was gleaming and ready for Ash Wednesday. Like two captains of the Papal Guard reviewing the troops, Doriano and Felipe had supervised all this work until both were satisfied with the result. The day before the celebration all the workers and faithful collaborators had a day of well-deserved rest.

Finally the evening of Wednesday the second of March arrived, and when the clock in the square announced the nona hour, the bells of the parish began to toll, calling the faithful. Meanwhile, inside the sacristy, Felipe remained for a few moments on the kneeler, silently praying. Behind him was the usual battalion of acolytes and altar boys, each carrying out his responsibilities. Doriano had arrived at that moment and began his particular argument with the more intrepid altar boys. The young cardinal crossed himself and went to where his deacon was standing:
- Good afternoon, Father Doriano. I hope you had a good day, is everything ready?- It was usual for a prelate to hold out his hand offering to kiss the ring, but Felipe deliberately hid his hand behind his back to avoid this situation, which he preferred to reserve only during the liturgy. - The ashes must be placed on the altar! - he warned one of the acolytes who was holding the ash vessel in his hand and looked a little confused. After these introductions and remarks, the cardinal was dressed in the liturgical vestments that had been prepared for the day; the other participants in the mass were also dressed in purple damask robes.

When everyone was ready, they arranged themselves in order to leave from the door of the sacristy at the sound of a bell, announcing to the faithful the beginning of the entrance procession. The guide cross preceded the others, and they slowly walked along the central nave of the church to the altar, where each one of them bowed his head before the most sacred place in the church. At this point the choir began to sing the antiphon a cappella:


Exáudi nos Dómine, quóniam benígna est misericórdia Tua, secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum Tuárum réspice nos, Dómine.
Salvum me fac Deus: quóniam intravérunt aqæ usque ad ánimam meam.

    [ Hear us, Lord, for your gracious mercy: in your infinite mercy, turn to us, Lord. V/. for the waves are reaching up to my soul. Repeat Hear us, Lord ]

When the singing of the antiphon was finished, the cardinal solemnly addressed the faithful with joined hands as he said:

He then went on to say three prayers:
