The Vice-chancellor arrived first, wishing to prepare everything before the arrival of the chancellor which would open the Office. When he penetrated into the impressive basilica, the smell of the incense arrived until him. He had always liked this smell, which aroused in him at the same time desires for exotic journeys in Orient and at the same time a frank solemnity. The present smell was a mixture of soft resin, certainly some béjouin of Armenia or Styrax of Asia Minor where the genovan sailors sometimes returned of their trip arround the world. He let his imagination steal his reason and transport it for a few moments in a distant country, towards unknown lands. This one returned gradually as his steps resounding in step on the cold marble of the respectable building lead him towards the major sacristy. Far off beyond the rail the canons dressed in black fussed at their hours, whereas deacons, priests, monks and believers from every order and from all the countries evolved and prayed in all the languages in the navez and the adjacent chapels. We really felt at the heart of the Arsitotelity.

Penetrating into the room, the cardinal dressed the paramentique devolved to the type of the ceremony which was going to be given soon. He left his purple soutane to put on his white dawn on which he placed his chasuble of purple color of tyr sink appropriate to the time of penitence which opened. He dressed finally his palium, white scarf of the Archbishops and the Primates strucked of six black crosses. The clothes of the Chancellor and the others officiating was ready, spread carefully over the wooden sideboard of yew. Everything was ready, the process waited no more than the dignitaries of the Holy Office.

Beyond the sacristy, higher in top of the towers of the basilica, the bells began their dialogue, shyly before answering in plenary session inaugurating the ball, flooding the streets of Rome by singing the bronze song .

Bright and early the old English bishop is out of his bed. Being of age makes the need for sleep of less importance, because there are so many other things to do in life. Today is Ask Wednesday and there is a mass about to start in Rome. So Vanyar is preparing himself for this and getting up out of bed early was one of the first things he did. Clean shaven, washed and in his robes he leaves his small place in Rome to go to the Saint Titus Basilica to see what is about to start there.

    ~

The Cardinal von Frayner had been awoken for quite a time, as it often began somehow an habit for very old people, when after he had prayed in his Basilica of Santa Rafaela Archangelo, he decided to go at the top of its tower. As the building had been edificated in the small island on the Tiber, the view on Roma was arresting, and the city felt even more alive as the current of the river seemed so strong and unstoppable. It was a fact : as a good disciple of the Aristotelician faith, he felt like the Contemplation of the world was making him see behind it. He kept standing there for some time, when the time came to go to the Maxima Basilica.

Everytime he came into the Basilica, he had that strong feeling that his mind was somehow blown. The lines seemed so powerful, the pillars seemed so strong, and that smell of incense that had taken the vice-chancellor away shortly before also stroke his nose. He closed his eyes, as he was feeling like a infinite hand blessing his soul. His assistant, Brother Valentin, worried about the old man, took him out of his dream as he asked :

Father, are you alright ? Do you need to sit down for a moment ?

The old cardinal slowly shook his head as an answer, and opened his eyes. The constant and amazing movement of the clerics and the beadles in the Basilica reminded him that there was still much to do to prepare the Mass ; supported by his cane, he slowly went to the sacristy. Seeing the archbishop of Besançon, he smiled and embraced him, before he said :

It seems the preparation went perfectly well. I am happy to celebrate that Mass with you, eminent Brother. May Santa Rafaëla and San Giovanni have a blessing eye on us today... he said, apparently full of joy.

Without delay, he put on the liturgic clothes that, as it was the beginning of Lent, were mainly violet. His pectoral cross seemed to be shining with the many candles in the Basilica, and so were his eyes. He was only waiting for his brothers and sisters from the Cause of Saints to come to beging the procession. He had the feeling that the Mass would be an incredible moment of communion between the Faithful all around the Aristotelic world.

    ~

Franciscus had awakened early that morning, and without having breakfast, in homage to the fasting of Lent, had gone out to get to the great Basilica of St. Titus.
The streets were crowded as on other days, but something was different, something that made everyone more compounds and more serious in their gestures and movements. He had the feeling that, obviously, on that day, "weigh" not only on consciousness, but also on exteriority of the people.
Franciscus considered it like a good exterior sign for the time that the Ash Wednesday celebrated.

Arrived at the Basilica, he entered in the great silence and simplicity that, unlike other days and occasions, that day characterizes the environment and the immense space of the church.
The simplicity and the only smell of incense that welcomed those entering, aroused the desire for prayer and meditation.

He saw some figures and reached them. They were the Chancellor and a bishop who had first reached the Basilica.
Greeted them with deference and then he reached the sacristy where he saw the Vice-Chancellor ready and the vestments for the Chancellor.
An altar boy helped him to wear his vestments and then waited for the start of the ceremony in silent mental prayer

Since his awakening the Primate had not had breakfast, he had taken with him a gourd of chouchen and a sausage well camouflaged under his cassock, as soon as the ceremony dragged a little too much. Brother William Blazing had heard about the announcement of the mass. Early in the morning he was up visiting the slums of Rome, taking some time with the poor. After feeding and praying with them he went off to the Basilica.

As he arrived, he saw his Bishop Vanyar and his Franciscan brother Franciscus. He greeted them and went to rest a bit in a corner of the basilica.

St. Titus... Oh, such a huge Basilica gathering faithful from time to time!
That was one of the thoughts of His Eminence Edoardo, who had been there only few days before, during the last greet to His Eminence Borgia.
So the Ash Wednesday was a double time dedicated to reflections: on a side, the shortness of the life of all the people, on the other side, the hope that even after a long time of suffering, whoever believes in the Most High will be gifted with life and goodness under His hands.
Deeply into his considerations, Monseigneur Borromeo Galli walked along the aisles and reached all his Brothers and Sisters, to take part to the celebration of the important event.

That morning the Archdeacon of Rome had received an insistent message from his counterpart from the Roman Holy Office. The inquisitor, more a man of codex than of holy books, had no choice but to modify his agenda to participate in this office, failing which he would certainly have been exposed to a very hard punishment. Bypassing the aisles to avoid crossing the vice-chancellor of the Holy Office, he sat down quickly.

Fast, silent, entered the Camerlengo, with unadorned dress. She sat down in a secluded place and while waiting the start of the Mass deeply immersed in a concentrated and intense prayer.

The Cardinal penetrated the holy place slowly, walking around the pews. He was almost ran over by the fast moving Chancellor of the Inquisition, moving aside to let him pass.

He then made his way up to hi own seating, reflecting on the remembrance of this day.

Monsignor Della Scala came near the Basilica from the same path. The driver complained that was not the short path, but he insisted. There was a modest house in that location, with an old woman hunched over his years who was smiling and blessing him, when he saw him. Arduino, from time to time and if he had more time, he would stop and was a little with her to chat and to give her a little comfort.

He got out of the carriage and appeared fully dressed in black as he used to. He hurried up the steps of the churchyard and, after he made a cross on the forehead by the threshold of the sacred place, he went inside quick.
