_________The monastery of the Santos Cuatro Coronados was built in the middle of the 5th century AD on the remains of a Roman domus. The large circular baptistery also dates from the same period, surpassed in size only by the Lateran baptistery. The proximity to the Palazzo Laterano, the ancient residence of the popes, gave great importance to the whole complex over the centuries.

_________In the 9th century, the church was completely rebuilt in such grandiose forms that it became one of the most important basilicas of Carolingian Rome. The fire that devastated the city in 1084, started by the Norman prince Robert the Giscard to defend Gregory VII from Emperor Henry IV, completely destroyed it. The church was rebuilt with smaller dimensions, which is why two courtyards are visible: the first corresponds to the ancient quadratic of the 9th century AD, the second in the area of the original central nave.

_________At the beginning of the 13th century, the building containing the monks' cells, the splendid cloister and the luxurious and fortified palace of the cardinal, whose entrance is still dominated today by the enormous Torre Maior, the Chapel of San Silvestro and the Gothic Hall, were added.

_________The interior of the church has three naves dominated by women's galleries and a group of ancient columns originating from monuments of imperial Rome. The Cosmatesque style floor is still the original, composed of large marble and porphyry discs and polychrome mosaics made of Roman marble tiles. The apse, the only example in Rome, spans all three aisles, as it covers the width of the central nave of the first basilica in which today's three aisles are obtained. The sumptuous frescoes that cover it depict the story of the Four Crowned Saints. The ceiling is coffered with wood and medieval frescoes can be admired on the walls of the naves.

_________From the left corridor you enter the splendid 13th century square cloister. In the centre of the garden is a marble fountain, formed by circular pools carved out of a single block.

_________El monasterio de los Santos Cuatro Coronados nació a mediados del siglo V d.C. sobre los restos de una domus romana. El gran baptisterio circular también se remonta al mismo período, superado en tamaño solo por el bautisterio de Letrán. La proximidad al Palazzo de Laterano, la antigua residencia de los papas, le dio gran importancia a todo el complejo a lo largo de los siglos.

_________En el siglo IX, la iglesia fue completamente reconstruida en formas tan grandiosas que se convirtió en una de las basílicas más importantes de la Roma carolingia. El incendio que devastó la ciudad en 1084, iniciado por el príncipe normando Roberto el Guiscardo para defender a Gregorio VII del emperador Enrique IV, lo destruyó totalmente. _________El interior de la iglesia, tiene tres naves dominadas por galerías de mujeres y sobre un grupo columnas antiguas y originarias de monumentos de la Roma imperial. El piso de estilo Cosmatesque sigue siendo el original compuesto por grandes discos de mármol y pórfido, y mosaicos policromados hechos con azulejos de mármol romano. El ábside, el único ejemplo en Roma, abarca las tres naves, ya que cubre el ancho de la nave central de la primera basílica en la que se obtienen las tres naves de hoy. Los suntuosos frescos que lo cubren y representan la historia de los Cuatro Santos Coronados. El techo está artesonado con madera, en las paredes de las naves se pueden admirar frescos medievales.

_________Desde el pasillo izquierdo se ingresa al espléndido claustro de planta cuadrada del siglo XIII. En el centro del jardín hay una fuente de mármol, formada por piscinas circulares talladas en un solo bloque.
