The legend of the Holy Bug

In a remote village, where people were very poor and groaning under the burden of taxes, lived a miller called Bug. He was not wealthy himself, but he was always ready to grind the grain of the poor for free to alleviate the worst misery. He knew the Lord blessed him with water for his mill, with health for his family, and so he wanted to pass on this blessing.

The only thing that worried him were woodworms and longhorn beetles in his old mill, which repeatedly damaged the grinder.

On a bitterly cold winter's night, an old woman came to him with a miserable sack of grain and asked him to grind it, saying it was the last thing she could do to feed her children. The miller was immediately ready to help her. But when he wanted to put the grinder into operation a worn wooden cone broke and the mill stopped.

Bug fell to his knees and prayed to the Lord that he could still grind that one sack. Then the mill was filled with a golden light and all the woodworms and beetles came forth and began to turn the millstone. And so great was the goodness of God, that not only was a sack of flour milled, but that at the end ten plump sacks of flour were ground out of a miserable sack of grain.

But when the greedy duke Hartmut heard about it, he sent his henchmen to fetch the miller. May he grind and multiply all the grain of the lord. But Bug said that it was not his work but that of the Lord and that he could do nothing here.

Then the avaricious duke enraged and let the miller grind to death under his own millstone. But the Holy Bug endured all this in serene prayer. But the worms left the mill on the same day, and as hard as Hartmut tried, he never managed to get the mill to work again. Legend has it that on July 13, every year, the mill starts at night and grinds the grain of the poor people.

Since those days, St. Bug is popularly called and revered as Lord of the Beetles. He is especially called when technical equipment does not work and is the patron saint of millers, builders and inventors.
