La grande porta che dava sul balcone venne aperta e ne emerse il Cardinale Camerlengo. Allargò le braccia al popolo che era accorso alla fumata bianca. Sorrideva, lieto in cuor suo per l'importante evento:

C'était fait, et tous devaient maintenant le savoir. Une annonce officielle serait faite, mais d'abord... d'abord... la fumée le dirait.

Il haussa les épaules comme pour repousser la maladie et se saisit des bulletins de vote. Les jolies piles, comptées par le Doyen, avaient élu un Pape lors d'un seul tour de scrutin. Certains diraient que cela était un miracle. Un miracle manigancé peut-être, mais les journalistes et autres hommes politiques avertis devaient en débattre.

Les bulletins de vote avaient été révisés et il les plaça donc cérémonieusement dans le foyer papal. La pile s'enflamma.

Dehors, une fumée blanche était visible depuis la cheminée.

Upon hearing the grand news Angus, a young cleric from Brittany, smiled gently and clapped his hands discreetly. It wasn't his manner to shout like a spectator of some ancient arena fight in the nearby Coliseum, but he was genuinely happy and hopeful that this new pope would prove to be a very good choice for the Church. It was the only thing that really mattered.

Long live His Holiness and may his pontificate be the one of wisdom, justice and goodness, said Angus without screaming. After all, this was supposed to be a sacred and pious moment, not a chariot race frenzy of centuries long past.

La fumata bianca saliva alto. Finalmente habemus papam.
Il fumo bianco si vedeva anche lontano, nel cielo scuro della sera. Il nome c’era: Sisto IV.

Anna Elena e sua cugina Valerie, come tutti, era giunta a Roma per i giorni del conclave ed era in quella piazza. Ci volle un attimo in più per comprendere con esattezza che suo padre era ormai il nuovo Pontefice.

Lunga vita al Papa! Viva Sisto IV! Eclamò unendo la propria gioia a quella degli altri. Tutti gridavano, cantavano, sventolavano bandiere, le campane che suonavano a festa. Essere presenti alla fumata era da togliere il fiato.
