Cardinal Kalixtus stepped through the curtain that separated the sacristy from the apse. Once inside the apse, he sat down on one of the benches and began to reflect on impermanence as he slipped his prayer beads through his fingers.

Kalixtus was concerned about the recent losses of clergy who had died or lapsed into serious illness. These events had made him reflect and reminded him of his own mortality. He thought of the prophet Aristotle's ideas on mortality.

Aristotle believed that everything in the world is impermanent. Everything that is born will also die. Death is an inevitable part of human life and a natural process that we all must go through. Aristotle argued that impermanence is what makes life valuable. Without the knowledge that life is finite, man would be in no hurry to use and value it.

Kalixtus was not convinced. Recent losses had made him wonder if life was really so precious when it had to end. He wondered if there was a way to avoid death and prolong life in some way.

Aristotle argued that impermanence was necessary for life to remain meaningful and valuable. Death gave meaning to life and motivated people to make the most of their time on earth and do their best. Kalixtus was not sure he could agree with Aristotle. If death was really so necessary, why was there so much suffering in the world? Why did so many innocent people have to die?

Kalixtus knew there were no easy answers to these questions. He often prayed for wisdom and a deeper understanding of the nature of death and human life. He believed that there was no black and white in these questions, only shades of gray.

Aristotle also argued that death was a natural consequence of aging and wear and tear of the body. The body was perishable and would weaken with time. Death was just a natural part of the life cycle. Kalixtus was aware that he would not live forever either. He knew that he would eventually die, just like all other people.

He often prayed for strength and comfort in times of sorrow. He knew that it was important not only to believe in life after death, but also to appreciate life in the here and now. Every moment was precious and should be used to make the most of life.

Obviously, Inès could not miss this ceremony. The Queen of Navarre dressed in her best clothes, giving special importance to a black ermine coat that covered her to protect her from the cold of the winter. She adorned her hands with several gold rings, one of them her wedding ring, two of the others with which she sealed her documents as Queen and Vice Constable of Rome. Inès knew that the moment was a solemn one, and so she had spared no detail, having herself transported in a palanquin from the Villa Medici, where she was installed when she came to the Eternal City. The palanquin was surrounded by servants who provided the necessary care for her in her pregnant state. When they arrived at the Milites Dei chapel, however, Inès got rid of all the guards and servants who had accompanied her, deciding to enter the place alone, with the sign of the cross and with respect.
In the sacristy, and as agreed, Inès took the attributes of a herald, ready to exercise her office on that day. With a calm smile, the young mother advanced to the position reserved for her as herald. She smiled at the cardinals and prelates, and greeted them, asking to kiss her ring, with special care for Roderic, whom she had not seen for a long time.

Melian had put on her ceremonial uniform, but had remained sober. Then she took the direction of the chapel with her regular and calm step. When she arrived, she greeted each person present with a smile and the respect due to their rank. Then she took her place in the seat reserved for her, and waited peacefully for the events to begin.

As usual, the ceremony was taking too long and it seemed that most of them would be members of the curia. He greeted with joy his former teachers and now colleagues in the curia, to his Catalan brother, Pere. Surely someone important would be invested to require the presence of the majority of the curia, because as a former Herald Officer, he knew about private ceremonies without so much paraphernalia. When I see the Princess of Ischia di Castro enter, which confirms my assumption. I held out my arm where my cardinal's ring was - un placer verla Alteza - I said in a calm voice and with a half-smile.
