The cardinal who had entered n silence settled down in her seat and as soon as the ceremony began she too intervened:

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem

Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine
Cum Sanctis tuis in æternum
Quia pius es

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem

Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine

Amen

then listened attentively to Cardinal Adonnis:

Let's pray:

Credo in Deum,
Altissimum Omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae,
Inferos et paradisi,
Ultima hora animae judicem nostrae

Et in Aristotelem, prophetam,
Nicomaqui Phaetique filium,
Missum ut sapientiam et universi
Divas leges errantibus hominibus erudiret

Credo etiam in Christum,
Natum ex Maria et Ioseph,
Vitam dedit ut nobis paradisi viam monstraret
Sic, postquam sub Pontio passus est
Propter salutem
Nostram martyr perivit
Consecutus est Solem
Ubi Aristoteles ad Altissimi dexteram eum expectabat

Credo in Divinam Actionem,
Sanctam Ecclesiam aristotelicianam, romanam, unam et indivisibilem
Sanctorum communionem,
Peccatorum remissionem,
Vitam aeternam.

AMEN

She joined her voice to the prayer. They were words she had repeated many times, but their meaning and the comfort they gave her never diminished.
Finally she joined in the Credo

Credo in Deum,
Altissimum Omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae,
Inferos et paradisi,
Ultima hora animae judicem nostrae

Et in Aristotelem, prophetam,
Nicomaqui Phaetique filium,
Missum ut sapientiam et universi
Divas leges errantibus hominibus erudiret

Credo etiam in Christum,
Natum ex Maria et Ioseph,
Vitam dedit ut nobis paradisi viam monstraret
Sic, postquam sub Pontio passus est
Propter salutem
Nostram martyr perivit
Consecutus est Solem

Peccatorum remissionem,
Vitam aeternam.

AMEN.

Felipe joined the other Roman faithful and clergy in the Basilica of San Tito to participate in the funeral of Cardinal Vicenzo. Indeed, he had met the deceased in the curia on very few occasions, a few polite greetings and a few words of courtesy; however, ensuring the salvation of any soul was the primary purpose of the Church, so he too would pay his last tribute to his deceased brother in the faith and would accompany his close friend Adonnis, who had been a great friend of the Portuguese prelate.

From his seat and with narrowed eyes, Felipe also fervently recited the prayers for Vicenzo's eternal rest:
-Requiem æternam dona ei, Domine-, he said, joining his voice to that of the assembly under the monumental dome of the most important basilica in the Aristotelian world.

-Credo in Deum,
Altissimum Omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae,
Inferos et paradisi,
Ultima hora animae judicem nostrae

-Et in Aristotelem, prophetam,
Nicomaqui Phaetique filium,

Praying the creed with the faithful was always a consolation and a renewal of his deepest and most sacred convictions. He pronounced the words "Peccatorum remissionem et Vitam aeternam", closing his eyes and remembering the face of the deceased cardinal, wishing that he was now in transit to the Solar Paradise.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Adonnis pigarreou.

      Adonnis cleared her throat.

At this minute, a deacon had brought him the Book of Virtues and opened it. Adonnis then read it aloud:

In his Dialogue about the Soul with its tutor, Epimenes, Aristotle concludes that "just like marriage, death is a final event. We must prepare ourselves carefully. If there is life after death, then the life we live before death must be devoted to preparing for life after death. Just as we must spend the time before marriage preparing for married life."

And then, turning to those present, he said:

Even at that time, long before Christos, when Aristotle was developing his conclusions in the sphere of ideas, he concluded what, today, is obvious to us: There is an afterlife, and we, human beings, must take advantage of this present life, corporeal and earthly, to prepare ourselves for the afterlife, which will be definitive and whose reality will depend on how we act in this current life.

The sadness, pain and sorrow that the death of a loved one brings to all of us is indisputable. It is certain that the more we study the Dogma, the more we understand the messages brought in the scriptures, we are able to accept the idea that death is, in the end, a transition from this life to the next. It is a certainty, however, for us Aristotelians, who seek to live according to the Virtues and keep away from vices, that very soon we will meet our loved ones again in the Solar Paradise.

However, the human psyche has, by definition, its limitations. So, even though we know that the departure of a loved one is only a momentary farewell, as momentary as the farewell we say to a friend who is about to embark on a ship for a journey of days or months, the pain, the grief, the sense of loss that overwhelms us is uncontrollable. We know that we will soon share life in Paradise with these loved ones, but even so, the feeling of loss hurts uncontrollably.

Today, we are victims of this uncontrollable pain of loss.
At this moment, Adonnis was staring at the coffin. We have lost a friend, a Cardinal, a leader and a great man. Vicenzo was a man devoted to his Faith from beginning to end and I know that soon I will meet him in the Solar Paradise. However, as I said, even with this certainty, I cannot not feel the great pain of losing my friend.

The Book of Virtues also shows us that when he received the revelation about the Last Judgment, Ysupso of Alexandria heard the following words from God Himself: "I decided, when I made the humans My children, to make them the most beautiful of gifts: I have made of all your spirits eternal souls, allowing you to gain Paradise if you follow the lessons of Aristotle and Christos, but punishing you in Hell if you are diverted from the ways which they traced. You are in My court of judgement throughout your lives".

What does this show us? What should we remember from all this? That this sad episode will occur to each of us. None of us is able to know the date and time, but we have the inalienable certainty that it will occur. So we need to do a self-evaluation and conclude whether we have kept as close to virtues and as far away from vices as we should have. This wonderful life is also the time when we must prepare for the next life: the life when we can see our beloved Cardinal again in the Solar Paradise, or the life when we can never see him again because our endless path of vices, sins, crimes and mistakes has led us to the Lunar Hell.

After the sermon, Adonnis turns to those present and says: Brothers and sisters, we are gathered here in friendship, but also as a family in mourning. We want to remember that the Most High is aware of all the good things in the life of Leopoldo Vicenzo Montenegro Viana, and so we also ask the Lord to grant Cardinal Vicenzo a warm welcome.

Adonnis, at this point, comes down from the altar and approaches the Urn. The Cardinal's Urn, constructed of thick oak logs with details prepared in gold, was in the central space between the pews and the altar.

At this moment, deacons and sacristans approached the Cardinals to assist them with the five signs. Taking candles from the basket brought with one of the deacons, Adonnis lights them and sets them down on the raised pillars surrounding the coffin. Immediately afterwards, he says: The Friendship is the light of the world, it is the flame that warms our hearts. May it now illuminate the path of Leopoldo Vicenzo Montenegro Viana and lead him to the Solar Paradise and to the presence of God.

Shortly after the first sign, Adonnis continues. A deacon hands him the Sacramental Cross, and before everyone, having them as witnesses, he blesses the sacred object.

Immediately after, he says, as he places the cross next to the body that was lying in the sleep of the just:

Leopoldo Vicenzo Montenegro Viana, we place this Aristotelian Cross on your coffin. A sign that links Aristotle and Christos, may it be for you, this cross, a sign of salvation and eternal life.

After placing the cross on the coffin, Adonnis receives from one of the deacons a wicker basket where some of the faithful, friends of the deceased, have placed gifts and mementos in honor of the Portuguese Cardinal.

Adonnis holds the basket and puts it down on another pillar, beside the coffin. After taking a deep breath, the Cardinal says:

Vicenzo, we place these gifts on your coffin, sign of our friendship, sign of our prayers, sign of our hearts.

This funeral reminds us of several things: The memory of an Aristotelian friend who left us. Of a man who had a history, unique, with God. Who was surrounded by the love of God. Who lived, or not, the experience of this love.

Here we are, several of us in this Basilica, around Leopoldo Vicenzo Montenegro Viana, to be aware of this love that always connected Vicenzo to God, that connects each of us with God, in every moment.

Death will come for each one of us, for some, near, for others, late. For some in their youth, for others in their old age.
The Lord warned us: "Be ready, always be ready, because you know neither the day nor the hour.

Aristotle guided us and Christos invited us to follow his example, to find our joy living for others, to love as they loved us.

We are here to pray. We call upon Aristotle to measure our brother's sins and Christos to intercede with the Lord that he may receive him into his Paradise.

Amen.

Then one of the deacons said: Anyone with memories and words about the deceased can share at this time.

A young child, not older than 8 goes forward at that moment. The silence is deep after the prayer. The child speaks with a soft mellow voice.

I didn't knew my father, but from my mother words I knew he was a great man. I always wished to have known him, but now I can't, except from the memories of others. Looking around I'm sure he was loved.

He took a breather.

Father, I may follow your steps, or not, but either way I hope to one day be worthy of you and your name. I hope to make you and mother proud even as you are no longer by my side, please, watch over me.

The boy stepped down and returned to his seat.

Adonnis levantou a mão direta e, ao desenhar o sinal da cruz no ar, deu a bênção apostólica final: Ego tandem benedicimus, in nomine Deum, et Aristotelem, et Christum. Amen.

Adonnis turned to the Congregation and said: "Before we leave this place, it is time to bid a final farewell to our brother Vicenzo."

A minute of silence fell upon the Basilica, and then he continued: "With respect and affection, we entrust him to God, hoping to meet him one day in His presence. Alongside all those who came before us and now dwell in the company of the Lord and the Saints, we wish Vicenzo a peaceful final journey."

Adonnis nodded his head, and then the deacons joined in, lifting the lid and sealing the coffin. With the coffin locked, guards lifted it, and following Cardinal Adonnis, the doors were opened as they descended into the Underground Crypt.

It had been a long time since Adonnis had entered there. Large torches were lit, illuminating the path, as did the entire Underground Crypt. In that place, many sarcophagi housed the bodies of past Popes and Aristotelian Cardinals.

One of the sarcophagi was open. Inside it, Cardinal Leopoldo Vicenzo Montenegro Viana would rest. At the signal of the Cardinal, the guards placed the urn inside the sarcophagus.

Adonnis took the aspergillum and poured holy water over the urn, saying: "This water, a reminder of your baptism, reminds us that God has made you His child. May He welcome you today into His Peace.

Rest, my friend. We shall meet again soon."

Adonnis nodded his head once more, and then the guards sealed the sarcophagus, followed by the deacons placing the bronze plate upon the sarcophagus to identify who lay buried in that place.

"I thank you all for being present here. The time has come for us to return to our homes and reflect upon everything that has transpired today."

Adonnis raised his right hand and, drawing the sign of the cross in the air, gave the final apostolic blessing: "Ego tandem benedicimus, in nomine Deum, et Aristotelem, et Christum. Amen."

Pope Sixtus stood solemnly among the mourners, his aged countenance reflecting the weight of loss after one more brother was recalled by the Most High. Sitting on his throne, he recited the prayers for the departed soul of Cardinal Vicenzo with the rest of the assembly, thinking of that young Portuguese whom he had been able to know only too superficially.

Ele recitou de cor:

Citation:
Credo in Deum,
Altissimum Omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae,
Inferos et paradisi,
Ultima hora animae judicem nostrae

Et in Aristotelem, prophetam,
Nicomaqui Phaetic filium,
Missum ut sapientiam et universi
Divas leges errantibus hominibus erudiret

Credo etiam in
Maria etum Joseph,
Vitam dedit ut nobis paradisi viam monstraret
Sic, postquam sub Pontio passus est
Propter salutem
Nostram martyr perivit
Consecutus est Solem
Ubi Aristoteles ad Altissimi dexteram eum expectabat

Credo in Divinam Actionem,
Sanctam Ecclesiam aristotelicianam, romanam, unam et indivisibilem
Sanctorum communionem,
Peccatorum remissionem,
Vitam aeternam.

AMEN
