Jeremiah the clockmaker appeared for the hearing in Rome.
The journey from Venice to Rome had been far shorter than it would have been from Augsburg, for his army was already stationed in Venice, ready to fight for the Emperor, for the Venetians, and soon thereafter to drive back the godless Turks. The matter that weighed so heavily upon his heart was the death of his wife Rebecca. She had been his first great and only love. They had been married for more than four years and had a daughter together; the little girl had turned three only a few weeks earlier. She missed her mother terribly, yet that was no longer in Jeremiah’s power. God had taken Rebecca from him. At times it was hard for him to believe that God’s plans were truly filled with love. But then again, God had always protected him through every battle and every campaign. He had never had much dealings with churchmen or with Rome itself. Therefore he did not know how he was supposed to behave here. Although he himself was a duke, he was not even certain of the proper etiquette among the nobility, let alone in the presence of the Church.
