The oblate statute is a lay statute which allows the faithful to invest in the abbey only by pronouncing minor vows. This path allows an intimate connection with the Most High. As a full member of the order, he will be able to participate in the activities and discussions of the abbey while meeting other pious, motivated and sympathetic faithful!
Here is the Oblate Charter:
Citation: | Charter of the Cistercian Oblate
Preamble
The Cistercian Order, which welcomes religious, also welcomes the faithful. The faithful of the Church who join the Cistercian Order are then called "Cistercian oblates" and take only minor vows.
Become an oblate
The status of Oblate is open to all baptized faithful who have proven their faith by sufficient knowledge of Aristotelian dogma. This basic knowledge is that provided by catechism courses, given by many clerics and seminaries as a preamble to baptism. That said, the Saint Benoit seminary also gives this course. The status of oblate is a lay status.
Oblate commitment
To be recognized as an Oblate, it is necessary to have taken the minor vows. These wishes are those of all clerics recognizing the rule of Saint Benedict for the laity and the Cistercian values.
Promise of Stability:
By the vow of stability in his community, the brother, trusting in the Providence of God who called him in this place and in this group of brothers and sisters, undertakes to use there, with constancy, the instruments of spiritual art.
Promise of Life Conversion:
By the vow of conversion of life, the Oblate, seeking the Most High in the simplicity of his heart, under the guidance of the Vita de Christos and the Book of Virtues, commits himself to Cistercian discipline.
Promise of Obedience:
By the vow of obedience, the oblate, aspiring to live under a rule and an abbot, promises to accomplish all that the legitimate superiors will order according to the present Constitutions. Thus renouncing his own will, he follows the example of Christos obedient to death and engages in the school of service to the Most High.
Oblate work
The oblate is part of the Cistercian community, so like everyone else, he or she must help out for this family. The role of the oblate is more particularly manual than intellectual work. They are therefore called upon to work together in the field, in the refectory or in other places of the Abbey. Some Oblates can also work in the library. Oblates lead their lives outside the Abbey with their families, but still have to give time to the Order.
A growing vocation
By being in the community, some Oblates will develop their vocations more than others and would therefore like to become lay brothers. There will be the possibility of following the Cistercian novitiate. The oblate can then request the enthronement, which is therefore for life and with the vow of chastity.
[u] Leave the Order
[/ u]
The Cistercian oblate can leave the Order when he sees fit by giving prior notice to the General Chapter. |
Canon Law:
Citation: | Oblate
The material cause = A faithful of the Church wanting to get involved in an order by remaining active in the century and with minor vows.
The efficient cause = It is accepted according to the rules of order.
The formal cause = The ceremony of enthronement and pronunciation of the minor vows.
The final cause = The status of oblates is a lay status and implies only minor vows of obedience and charity. The oblate can bear arms, get married and start a family. It is left to the discretion of the various orders to integrate this status or not. |
