Today was a happy day. The heretic was dead and the Empire could breathe a sigh of relief. Of course, no news had come out of the "Emperor's" mouth for two weeks. No one should be less surprised than Kalixtus. The depth of guilt weighing on this man's soul was outrageously deep and pregnant with meaning.

The Cardinal, however, had chosen this day as a holiday and so it was no surprise that he sent out invitations to this joyous occasion. He did not want to celebrate alone and so he invited those who had suffered under the rule of this cardboard figure. A personal survival party. This was something very spontaneous and yet Kalixtus was able to prepare the outside areas of the palazzo for a number of illustrious and distinguished guests. The swimming pool with its beautiful mosaics formed the lower centre of the outdoor area framed by cypresses and Mediterranean plants. They were fragrant trees that spread their spicy scent in the May sun and impregnated the air with the lust for life. The pool area merged into a spacious terrace with small fountains that splashed in the shade. The palazzo's large gallery was open, of course, as was the entire ground floor. The upper rooms remained discreet for guests' private gatherings.

As always, his kitchen staff were able to conjure up excellent meat and fish dishes from the traditional cuisine of central Italy. Beer, wine and champagne were brought up from the vaults. Everyone should enjoy the feast as they like it today. Of course, there was no lack of exclusivity for the cardinal, who usually had his own very exquisite taste. Both in his guests and in himself and the standards to which he subjected himself.

The cardinal's staff today wore only white linen trousers fastened with a golden belt slightly lower than normal at the pelvis. The boys, who came from all over the world, would accompany the evening with their presence, their wit and charm and, of course, their services. Each of the Cardinal's servants would be able to parade appropriately and entertain politely.

Kalixtus himself would wear white, the colour of the lion. Silk robes that could be puffed out in wide streaks by the gentle gusts. But the cardinal wasn't sure he would be all poolside and not in the pool all evening. Some of his boys made themselves comfortable there in any case.

That day he was particularly happy. He wore white robes, wearing a gold braided belt and a gold necklace with a sun pendant that adorned with the crown on his head.

He had received the invitation from Kalixtus and didn't know if the chance was right, but with Adonnis, a young boy carried a few bottles of the legitimate Port Wine, produced in sunny Portugal.

In the entrance area of the Palazzo, Adonnis spotted one of Kalixtus' receptionists and said to him: Good afternoon, my young boy. May the Most High be with you. Would you be so kind as to let Cardinal Kalixtus know that Adonnis is here. Thank you.

Rome! Oh wonderful, magnificent, eternal Rome! How many days had passed since Oberon had last set foot on the streets of Rome? It seemed to him like half an eternity, yet only a few months had passed and still this place remained more familiar to him than any other. Rome was even more familiar to him than the city he was currently living in, and yet it didn't really feel like home. Rome, on the other hand? Rome had been an integral aspect of his life for so many years that he looked upon the city with joyful anticipation and bliss. Oberon loved Rome! Now, did this mean that he regretted his decision to resign his posts? Not at all, no. His decision had made him happy, so it was impossible for him to regret it. But Oberon was not above things and could easily acknowledge that this city and its inhabitants, all the wonderful people had shaped him and in the end made him the person he was today. Especially his host that evening, his mentor and uncle, the Light of the House de Montfort-Beaumont d'Autevielle - Kalixtus. It was the festivities to which Kalixtus had invited that brought Oberon to Rome that day and revealed to him how much he had missed this city, how much he loved it. Kalixtus would look forward to another extraordinary gift in the future, as soon as Oberon had an assessment of what could excite his uncle next. Elephants and tobacco plants just got boring in the long run, didn't they?

He had not been at all surprised by the invitation to this festivity, nor by the creativity behind it - even though Oberon could not remember an invitation ever making him laugh as much as this one had. Just the thought of the artistic design still made him grin. One thing had to be conceded to Kalixtus without envy, he simply had style. His carriage stopped in front of his uncle's palazzo and Oberon got out, immediately adjusting his elaborate Chinese robes before offering his hand to his companion. Jin Yu had always accompanied him to such festivities and this time, too, his lover had agreed to accompany him. Much to his delight, it was the first official ceremony Oberon had attended since his retirement from clerical duties. Accompanied by his lover and a servant who carried the gift for Kalixtus behind them, Oberon entered the palazzo.

When Inès received the invitation, we have to admit that she didn't even look at it, nor did she bother to read it. It was read for her by one of her ladies, and as soon as the girl mentioned that it was an invitation from Kalixtus, the Infanta replied: Enough! Tell me no more! I'll come with pleasure, I don't need to know what's going on! And indeed, the Pope's Squire Major came on the appointed day. Like the two cardinals already present in the palazzo, by chance, she decided to dress in white with gold motifs. It was a cotton and silk tunic, with many pleats and many metres of fabric that Inès tried not to drag by twisting the tail of the dress around her arm, which was tightened around her chest and waist with the golden thread embroidered with floral motifs. She also wore a long red veil covering her golden hair, which also covered her back, and as a whole, her image evoked the patricians of the ancient and noble houses of Rome.

And behind her were the famous gospel nuns with drums and other instruments, singing in different languages (because these nuns are polyglots thanks to the Pontifical University), so that the people of Rome, as they passed, made way for them in the street, forming a gallery of surprised people, who watched the path of Inès and her curious retinue towards the palazzo of Cardinal Montfort. Ah, the White Lion! A great teacher of the young Marquise, rector universitas, though unfortunately she did not prove to be as good a pupil as she should have been. But she had great respect for the Cardinal and her way of showing it was to bring different wines: a rosé from Navarre, from her own cellars; a red from La Rioja, from her elder brother's cellars; an orange juice with a clear liqueur, from the parties organised by her younger brother in Valencia. And the nuns also used the bottles as instruments! The music did not stop until Inès arrived at the door of the palazzo, where Cardinal Adonnis, and another peculiar couple dressed in exquisite oriental taste, were already there.

– Your Eminence! – Inès immediately bowed to Adonnis and kissed his ring. Then she stared at his clothes.– Oh but...! We're all dressed alike! We should change our clothes. I wouldn't let Arnarion leave Aracoeli if he was going to dress the same as me! Besides, he's still waiting for the imperial guard to drag him to his trial. He's been waiting for them since February, I think.
I admit to wearing a red veil to hide the blood, in case they still want to cut off my head. But I think I am too insignificant to be threatened in that way, and they only wanted to frighten a little girl accompanying an old man.

Of course, Inès was referring to her adventures as the Holy Father's escort during the long days of travel, and to that fateful day when they had to hide in France from the insistent threats of the deceased. But this fateful thought was quickly dispelled by looking at Oberon and his companion. – Oh, your clothes are original! Where could I get something like that? Excuse me, where are my manners. I'm Inès, pleased to meet you.

"Why, thank you my lovely lady." Oberon's melodic voice was filled with a warm tone, his unusually bright eyes fixed on the young woman and his lips curled in an amused smile. Inès was the first person in many years to comment on his preferred style, and even to do so benevolently. It was interesting to observe how blind humanity was at heart, capable only of seeing what it wanted to see, not what was really in front of it. Inès obviously had more intelligence than most people and, moreover, a high perceptive faculty, that she definitely noticed that his style did not exactly correspond to the norm. For Oberon, this was immensely entertaining, but also interesting. Perhaps there was hope for humanity after all. "My name is Oberon and I am immensely pleased to make your acquaintance, Lady Inès." He bowed his upper body in a respectful gesture. "I have the extraordinary pleasure of being accompanied by Jin Yu and as for the clothes... would you be pleased if I instructed my tailors to send you some tailoring patterns? Regrettably, I have no robes for women in my household."

His attention went to Adonis and he gave the man a warm smile, a few months ago he had called this man brother, but this was now inappropriate. Oberon greeted the cardinal appropriately of his station before choosing more personal words. "It is a pleasure to see you again, Your Eminence. I hope you have had a pleasant time since we last met."

    ---

Cardinal Della Scala was rather tired in those days; too many unpleasant events and too many worries clouded his eyes. Nevertheless, he did not want to miss this celebration. He wore a white silk suit embroidered with hundreds of little flowers made of red threads and wore Roman-style shoes. With him was his new squire, Filippo de' Medici.

He entered smiling and greeting those present and went to look for his host.

Who's going to pour me a drink? He asked in a squeaky voice to an unspecified interlocutor.
