About the Mourning of the Empire

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened
From Us, Matilda Krämer, Regent of the Holy Roman Empire,

To all citizens of the Empire,
To all those who read or hear this,

With a heavy heart, the news of the Emperor's death reached us a few hours ago. After a fire broke out in the palace in Strasbourg on the 7th of January, for reasons that have not yet been clarified, the Emperor took care of his duty as Protector until the last minute. He helped to save as many people as possible, which is why it is only thanks to him that almost no one was injured. But in the hours that followed, the emperor himself became worse and worse. Finally, he succumbed to the consequences of his own injuries caused by the smoke and fire and died on the 7th of January.

This tragedy greatly shocks us and certainly the whole Empire. Raphael du Bois de Centrecourt was not only an Emperor, but like a friend who always cared, he had an open ear and a comprehensive view of situations. He was an open-minded, warm-hearted man who nevertheless knew exactly what he wanted. I can proudly say that I was happy to stand by his side, as certainly all of my colleagues of the Imperial Council. Raphael will always be remembered, because with his diligence and ambition he achieved and implemented a lot.

To pay our last respects to our deceased Emperor Raphael du Bois de Centrecourt, and to do justice to Imperial Mourning, we will follow the regulations under the Bulla Aurea for the next few days.

VIII. Imperial mourning
(1) Upon the death of His Imperial Majesty and during the mourning period, the following customs must be followed to honor His memory:

 • As soon as the death is announced, the bells of all churches in Strasbourg and its surroundings will ring every two hours, except at night, until the wake.
 • All flags of the Empire will be at half-mast.
 • All imperial offices will be closed for a period of two days, unless exceptional circumstances prevail.

(2) The Imperial Regent is responsible for announcing the dress Protocol as well as organizing the funeral with the help of the Grand Master of the Imperial Household.
(3) The Imperial Regent is responsible for the execution of the last wishes of the Emperor concerning his funeral.
(4) A religious ceremony should be held to honor the Emperor and to escort him to the gate of the Solar Paradise in the best possible way. In case of refusal of the Holy Aristotelian Roman and Universal Church to execute such a ceremony, the Imperial Regent is legally responsible for organizing a civil ceremony and a commemoration.
(5) The Emperor will be buried in a religious crypt if this was his In Gratibus wish. Otherwise, the Emperor will be buried in the town of his choice, in a civil or religious cemetery.
The Imperial small Mourning will last 20 days. The great Mourning shall last for 10 days.
No ceremonies will be allowed during these 10 days.
In addition, all flags will be at half-mast and all Imperial offices will be closed today and tomorrow in order to observe the Imperial Mourning.
Furthermore, the following protocol regarding dressing shall be in force.
1- Dress Protocol
1.1 During the Great Mourning for His Imperial Majesty:
- Their Highnesses, the children of the Imperial Sovereign, must wear gray.
- Members of the Imperial Council, Regents and nobles must wear black, white or emerald and the noble women must be veiled or cover their hair.
- Senior officials of the Church (archbishops, cardinals, etc.) must wear dark capes lined with dark blue.
- Soldiers must wear their swords with a mourning ribbon. Nobles who do not have the obligation of wearing a sword must not wear one.
- The people must be dressed without color, as much as possible, ie. in black and/or white. If they cannot afford such clothes, they must wear a white and/or black ribbon at their waists.
- Jewelry and ornaments are banned except for the nobility and must be worn with discretion and humility.

1.2 During The Little Mourning:
- The noble women can uncover their hair.
- Swords are worn normally
- Jewelry can be worn normally as well
There is already a Book of Condolence ready in the Throne Room for everyone to write their last words to Raphael.
My final words, however, should be that despite great sadness, we should always keep in mind what we were able to achieve together with Raphael and what we can continue to achieve. Therefore, we should cherish his memory and remember all the beautiful moments with him. To all those who feel great pain about this loss, I would like to share what I try to keep in mind for myself: How lucky am I, to have something, that makes saying goodbye so hard?
Let us stand together in this hour of sorrow and look back at the light that Raphael brought into the lives of many.

Signed and sealed in the Imperial Palace of Strasbourg on the 8th of January in the year of Grace MCDLXX.

Matilda Krämer
Regent of the Holy Roman Empire
