[Kalixtus]

Et cum spiritu tuo. The cardinal's voice was melodious and dark while his eyes naturally watched the Spaniard's every move. He suppressed a smirk at the nervousness. Kalixtus had this effect fatally on many young people and sometimes on older ones.

There were rumours that some people feared Kalixtus's judgement rather than that of the Inquisition tribunals. To disappoint him was bitter. Yet Kalixtus had no idea of the effect he had on humanity. An unpleasant truth, for in the end he remained who he was.

The prayers were well said and pleased the cardinal immensely. The Spaniard was not only prince of the Church, he knew how to play with words and with his physical attraction. Kalixtus judged this inwardly. The small circle of worthy celebrants was an expression of these judgements. There were only a few services he attended. Amen, said the cardinal and a smile like the sunrise over a paradisiacal beach crossed the cardinal's face.

He crossed himself at the Hallelujah and closed his eyes for a brief moment to feel the energy of the ether, to feel God who always stood by him in his sadness.

He listened to the reading and thought about who were really his friends and who, like Daju, only pretended to be friends and who would betray him at any time and cheaply.
Over the years Kalixtus had experienced many, many disappointments and yet he had remained open-hearted even though there were so many scars. God healed these wounds and gave him hope and confidence. That was a wonderful consolation for him, the cardinal.

When the reading was finished, Felipe received the mitre again. Then he ascended the steps of the pulpit and took hold of the wooden railing to look down on the faithful, also Kalixtus. One of the most important parts of the liturgy was undoubtedly the homily, as it had a pedagogical sense among the faithful, a form of learning about Aristotelian values, dogma and doctrine. Felipe used to prepare his sermons the day before mass: he would sit at his desk and consult books and sermons of other priests for inspiration; then he would write it all down and go over it several times. Once in the pulpit he never had a handwritten copy, but tried to memorise and even improvise it:

Dear brothers. Almost fifteen hundred years ago, our Messiah celebrated a supper with his apostles, at which, as friends, they shared their food. A meeting which the Book of Virtues tells us culminated in the capture of Christos, betrayed by Daju, one of his followers, and who, out of envy, delivered up under slander the one he should have defended. God's ways are inscrutable, and sometimes good is born of evil, since from the betrayal and thanks to the sacrifice of the Messiah, the Nameless Creature was outwitted and the sacred prophecy that had been made so many centuries ago was fulfilled. Two prophets to fulfil the designs of the Almighty: the first who gave us reasoning and philosophy, and the second who gives us Friendship and the foundation of our Church.

Christos' simple and humble act of sharing the supper with his disciples gave birth to the most sacred liturgy of the Mass: the consecration of the bread of friendship. But why do we commemorate it every time we gather in Church as a community of the faithful? It is at that moment when the ether materialises most powerfully among us, and connects us with our Messiah, because if he shared the bread of friendship among the apostles, we share it equally among our faithful and neighbours. The liturgy is thus food for faith, which strengthens the bond with the whole ecclesial community. The bond of Aristotelian friendship is at the centre of the whole life of the believer, and the liturgy is central to the life of this bond.

But how do we understand and nurture this friendship in order to keep the community of the faithful together? St Lescure said that friendship could be represented by a circle, the very symbol of divine perfection. The study of the circle allows us to highlight two elements. The first is the centre, unique and lord of all, and its circumference, in which all the points are equal and at the same distance from the centre. Thus, the Aristotelian community is a community of people who have in common their faith in the Most High and, therefore, are all equal before him by this very fact. The believer is introduced into the community through baptism, which gives the new believer the premises of perfect Aristotelian friendship. But this friendship does not stand on its own, but needs to be developed through contact with God in prayer and the sacraments, and also through the witness of gentleness and compassion towards others. Friendship is, therefore, the seed and mortar which holds our community together, and which we must work day by day to maintain and grow.



When he had finished his homily, and wishing that all the faithful had understood his words, he descended the steps of the pulpit stairs and went back to the altar. One of the acolytes took the miter and addressed the faithful again: -Dear brothers, let us now pray the universal prayer, the one we all said at our baptism, which reminds us of our fidelity and love for God and his Church.

He stepped forward a couple of paces and stood in front of the altar, in the centre, and raising his hands and joining them together, he began the prayer:

Credo in Deum,
Altissimum Omnipotentem,
Creatorem caeli et terrae,
Inferos et paradisi,
Ultima hora animae judicem nostrae

Et in Aristotelem, prophetam,
Nicomaqui Phaetique filium,
Missum ut sapientiam et universi

Natum ex Maria et Ioseph,

Amen

Felipe then place the ciborium on the white linen corporal, opened it and took out the small loaf of bread from inside; then received again the thurible from the deacon and with it blessed the bread while saying: - Incénsum istud a Te benedíctum ascéndat ad Te, Dómine, et descéndat super nos misericórdia Tua.- Immediately he also blesses the altar and then the deacon.

Then, joining hands on the altar and bowed, he recites: In spíritu humilitátis et in ánimo contríto suscipiámur a Te, Dómine: veni, Sanctifiátor Ætérne Deus, et béne+dic hoc sacrifícium, Tuo Sancto Nómini preparátum, ob memóriam Prophétæ Tui.

The young cardinal, at the most sacred moment of the liturgy, with his head bowed, he carefully takes a piece of the sanctified bread with his left hand while holding his right hand on his breast, and with devotion and humility says: -Dómine, non sum dignus-. The Cardinal crossed himself at the Sanctus and recited the particularly beautiful work.

He followed the elaborate liturgy he performed at the blessing of the bread. What was going through his mind, however, were the words of the homily. Kalixtus was a man who could fully engage with the magic of the words. Did Christos know of the betrayal? What strength, what doubt flowed through him at the moment of realisation. Everyone knew what it felt like to be betrayed, this inner rage, this despair and the eternal question of why. That's what breaks people. Christos seemed to transform it into strength. For this ability, which he demonstrated in many ways, the Messiah deserved admiration.

Kalixtus, as a high clergyman, took the bread that the deacon handed him and smiled warmly into the young man's face. Deo gratias, Amen. Then he ate it as a sign of communion and in remembrance of the Messiah's supper.

When the communion rite was over, the deacon went back up the altar steps and carefully placed the leftover crumbs and pieces of bread inside the ciborium. He immediately carried the ciborium to the tabernacle and closed the door, bowing deeply before returning to the altar, where the acolytes had already folded and returned the remaining liturgical objects to the credence. They then approached the cardinal and placed the mitre on his head. Meanwhile the subdeacon went to the ambo and sang the "misa est": the mass was concluded.

Still from his cathedra, Felipe stood up and said raising his voice so that the faithful could hear him:

The young cardinal approached the altar kissed it with great respect. Then he continued with the conclusion of the Mass:

The Cardinal improvised a few words of farewell: - Dear brothers, remember that Friendship is a precious gift which we must all maintain and increase in our lifetime: love your neighbours and seek their good as if it were your own, be faithful and loyal, and never follow in the footsteps of Daju, because in betrayal is the seed of spiritual death from which we must always turn away. Now is your time to practise virtue and make our lives Christos-like.

He made the sign of the cross three times in the air solemnly with his hands covered with his white chirothecae. Then a final bow to the altar and turned to the faithful as the procession, led by the cross, started its way back to the sacristy.

The choir began to sing Te Deum "a capella". The mass was over:

Te Deum laudamus: te Dominum confitemur.
Te aeternum Patrem, omnis terra veneratur.
Tibi omnes Angeli; tibi caeli et universae Potestates;
Tibi Cherubim et Seraphim incessabili voce proclamant:

As Felipe passed his mentor and friend Kalixtus, he stopped and kissed his hand with affection and respect. Kalixtus took both hands and clasped Felipe's hands and spoke. I thank you for this moment together Felipe and for the great Roman Mass, it gives a troubled mind the gift of inner peace while the storm roars around us.

He lifted the young Cardinal's hand and placed it against his forehead for a moment and spoke. Pray for me, my friend, as I pray for you.

Then he dismissed the cardinal, who would want to disrobe the heavy liturgical vestments, and Kalixtus would linger in the church for a moment longer, talking to God, praying and reflecting on some loss or other.

Aquella calurosa mañana de finales de julio, el sol bañaba con su luz los tejados de la ciudad eterna, haciendo que la gente buscara refugio de sus rayos caminando junto a las paredes y buscando un poco de frescura refrescándose en las numerosas fuentes que presidían las plazas de la urbe. Mientras tanto, y a pesar de ello, los romanos se afanaban en cumplir con sus obligaciones: un zapatero amartillando la suela de un par de botas, la vendedora de pescado gritaba la excelencia de sus sardinas, dos monjas acompañando a un numeroso grupo de escolares, y mientras tanto Felipe aguardaba la llegada de Kruela en la protección que le brindaba la sombra del pórtico de su parroquia.

Tras saludar a un par de parroquianos conocidos, el cardenal aguardaba ya vestido con sus ropajes litúrgicos: la mita, el alba y la capa pluvial blanca con brocados de oro que utilizaba para las ceremonias como bautizos y bodas. Pero, ¿por qué estaba ahí? La ceremonia comenzaba en la puerta, justo donde el catecúmeno era recibido e invitado por el clérigo para entrar, con gran convencimiento del paso que iba a dar al tomar el sacramento del bautismo. Kruela no tardaría en llegar, estaba seguro. La campana del reloj de la iglesia marcó la hora sonando diez veces.

Lo confirmo, bien sencilla, pues sencilla vine al mundo, sencilla pienso postrarme para confirmar mi fé, nada traje al mundo, nada mundano tengo para ofrecer, más sé que tengo dentro de mi lo mas preciado. mi esencia, mi fe y mi convicción de lo que deseo para mi futuro, Sólo con la guía del Espíritu Divino de Christos encausaré esta nueva etapa que se proyecta frente a mis ojos. Dejo atras lo que no sirve, miro hacia adelante. El Cardenal extiende su mano, la tomo con delicadeza y beso su anillo. - Aqui estoy eminencia.

El cardenal observó sonriendo con las manos entrelazadas sobre su pecho cómo su amiga Kruela, con quien tanto se había carteado en las últimas semanas, subía la alargada escalinata de piedra que ascendía desde la plaza de Trevi hasta el gran porche de la iglesia. Una vez que la arandina llegó a su lado la saludó con la confianza habitual que se tenían: - Mi querida Kruela, veo que nada te detiene, ni siquiera el laberinto de calles y plazas de Roma; temía que pudieras perderte, pero ¡aquí estas! Sé bienvenida a la parroquia de San Vicente. - Se había sorprendido cuando Kruela besó su anillo, una buena práctica que ya casi nadie hacía y pocos entendían: no significaba reverenciar al sacerdote, sino al sagrado ministerio que con sus manos ejercía. De un bolsillo interior de su casulla, Felipe extrajo un pequeño misal y lo abrió por la parte de la ceremonia del bautismo. Por supuesto sería en latín, y la catecúmena tendría que responder apropiadamente, pero también saber lo que significaban esas palabras que iba a pronunciar.

Sin más preámbulos, Felipe se santiguó y comenzó con la introducción que se llevaría a cabo en la puerta del templo:

Luego hizo una breve homilía como introducción pensando claramente en ella:

-Querida Kruela, este es un día de especial júbilo para la comunidad de los fieles, en el que celebramos la entrada en nuestra Iglesia de una mujer cuya alma desea ser salvada y caminar bajo la protección de la gracia de Dios. El camino de nuestra vida a veces se nos muestra como un prado en primavera, de trazo recto, en el que podemos ver con claridad nuestro origen y nuestro destino en el horizonte; sin embargo muchas veces ese mismo camino se nos antojará con grandes recodos, laderas pedregosas, escarpadas subidas y bajadas que pondrán a prueba nuestra valía; tú has conocido también ese camino en los últimos tiempos, pero has afrontado con entereza la adversidad. Así es la vida de todo ser humano, decisiones que deberemos tomar, y sobreponernos a las adversidades que nos depara un futuro a veces más cruel de lo que esperamos o creemos merecer. Pero ¿qué diferencia hay entre alguien incrédulo y otra persona cuya fe en Dios ha sido revelada? pues que ese camino, ya sea sencillo o complejo, placentero o tortuoso no lo haremos jamás solos, porque por un lado siempre tendremos la presencia intangible de Dios Padre que nos acompaña, pero también de todos nuestros hermanos en la fe, que estarán allí para tendernos una mano, regocijarse con nosotros en los momentos de celebración y también ayudarnos y ser sustento cuando las vicisitudes de la vida nos pongan a prueba. Y no, querida Kruela, la Fe no es algo que se encuentre de un día para otro, ni siquiera en un mes, en un año, sino que lleva toda una vida descubrir que Dios habita entre nosotros. También los sacerdotes vivimos en un constante torbellino de dudas y crisis espiritual, porque la Criatura Sin Nombre nos confunde y nos intenta llevar por el camino de la perdición. Hoy estás aquí porque, aunque probablemente aún no sepas el alcance completo de tu Fe, sin embargo tienes claro que deseas renunciar al influjo de los pecados para estar alumbrada en el camino de la virtud y el amor. ¡Ah el amor! es el don más grande que nuestro Creador nos ha dado.

Felipe señaló el libro para que Kruela siguiera la ceremonia y lo que debía responder.

-Quo nómine vocáris? La respuesta era obvia "Kruela" pero igualmente ella debía decirlo.

Iniciada la ceremonia el Padre Felipe abrió el misal, y santiguándose comenzó con la introducción.

Habitualmente los bautismos solían hacerse para los niños recién nacidos, por eso al inicio de la ceremonia en la puerta de la iglesia, se presentaba e introducía a amigos y vecinos al bebé y por tanto se daba a conocer su nombre. Pero los bautismos a los adultos eran también muy habituales, así que se conservaba también ese momento del sacramento en el que el catecúmeno decía su nombre de pila aunque todos ya lo conocieran. Felipe respondió con una sonrisa cariñosa y cercana a la arandina, luego prosiguió:

- Kruela, quid petis ab Eccclésia Dei?
R/. Fidem, quæ mihi préstat vita ætérnam.

Con mucha convicción respondí:

Cuando Kruela hubo respondido, Felipe se inclinó un poco hacia adelante, acercándose a la cara de la catecúmena y exhaló tres veces muy cerca del rostro de la mujer, aquello tenía, como todo en la Iglesia, un gran simbolismo: el aliento de Dios que creaba la vida y animaba todas las cosas del universo.

-Exi ab ea, immúnde spíritus creatúræ sine nómine, et da locum Spíritui Altíssimi.

Entonces, él hizo la señal de la cruz con su mano, bendiciendo a Kruela, y con sus manos extendidas prosiguió:

-Preces nostras, quæsumus, Dómine, cleménter exáudi: et hunc eléctum Tuum Kruela, quem ad rudiménta fídei vocáre dignátus es, perpétua virtúte custódi: Qui vivis et regnas per ómnia sæcula sæculórum. Amen.

Seguidamente Felipe se hizo a un lado dejando paso libre al interior de la iglesia, que lejos de ser un templo oscuro, estaba lleno de luz, vida y de todos los romanos y extranjeros que entraban a pedir y a rezar en numerosos idiomas por sus almas y las de sus seres queridos. Entonces tomó la mano derecha de Kruela con su mano izquierda guiándola al interior del templo en la plaza Trevi.

Ya dentro de la iglesia de San Vicente, y amparados por la frescura habitual de los grandes edificios, los dos caminaron lentamente por la nave del templo, pero no se dirigieron al altar, sino a uno de los laterales: el baptisterio. Era una capilla cerrada con una reja de hierro, aunque ahora permanecía abierta, de donde colgaban guirnaldas de flores blancas preparadas para la ocasión por los fieles que se encargaban de mantener y conservar el templo. En el centro, una pila bautismal de piedra labrada en la que podían apreciarse los apóstoles con su atributos característicos. Entonces Felipe detuvo sus pasos delante del baptisterio, se volvió y sonrió a su amiga.

-Estás en uno de los lugares más sagrados de esta iglesia, el baptisterio. Querida Kruela, ahí está la pila bautismal, labrada por canteros hace muchos siglos, y por la que han pasado generaciones y generaciones de fieles romanos y extranjeros que, como tú, decidieron seguir el camino de Dios. Hoy no sólo honramos al Todopoderoso y a sus Santos, sino también a todos nuestros fallecidos que murieron en la esperanza de la Vida Eterna.

Antes de entrar, el cardenal abrió de nuevo el misal y continuó con la ceremonia:

-Kruela, abrenúntias creatúræ sine nómine et ómnibus peccátis tuis?

Los dos entraron entonces en el interior del baptisterio y se pusieron alrededor de la pila.

Felipe sonrió con confianza y ternura a Kruela porque la ceremonia estaba llegando a su fin, y sabía el valor tan importante que tenía para ella: no sólo era cuestión de fe, también la necesidad de empezar con una nueva vida. El cardenal se quitó de sus hombros la estola púrpura dejando ahora sólo la blanca; a continuación tomó un cirio de cera de abeja con una cruz pintada en color bermejo y lo encendió directamente de la llama del cirio pascual, luego se lo dio a Kruela.
