The Basilica San Giovanni was a large and impressive building, of a rare beauty, one of the dozens of churches you could find in Rome.

Matthijs was in Rome since some days. He had been the one who had been in charge of bringing the heart of the dead Emperor to Rome. He did it already last year after his Mistress, Johanna de Brancion, gave him the task. She is the executor of the last will of Comyr von Wettin. It took a long time until something happened. He knows that not only Johanna wrote to Rome, the family of Comyr did it too. And finally the church decides to fulfil the wish of the dead Emperor. His Master, Findecano de Brancion, couldn't be in Rome because of his duties in Strasbourg. His Mistress couldn't attend either, because the travel would have been too hard for her, being pregnant in the 8th month. It wouldn't be a wise idea to travel that far in her situation. So it was him who attends in their place the funeral of the heart.

The coat of arms of the Duke and the Duchess of Jülich are on his coat and show clearly where he belongs too. He enters the basilica early because he didn't wanted to be late.

Along with his family Akarin traveled to Rome to the funeral of Comyrs heart. Even that it was a long journey in winter, he enjoyed it, the Italian beer was drinkable and the wine even more. He didn't spend any thougts, that this journey could have some more spirituality in it, simply because that wouldn't be him, if he would be extremely touched by such an event. Honestly said, he didn't love the former Emperor that deep, it's more like he envied him for a few reasons. But as he was a part of this strong family Akarin felt indebted to go to this funeral, which was why he at least took the pledge of abstinence for the last seven days before the funeral. He thougt that would be firmly enough.
Entering the Basilica San Giovanni the Blonde felt like shrinking down to a tiny bit of himself. Even so he always tried not to be intimidated by religious buildings, being in Rome churches and so had an much stronger effect on him, than he would have thougt before. Giving it a moment being impressed he stood in the entrance and took a good look on some of the details in the Basilica, but the more he looked, the more he was impressed, which was why he had to rip himself from staring and started going to the front rows, where he took his seat and waited for the ceremony to begin.

The prelate was preparing in the sacristy for a very important ceremony. The late Emperor Comyr was a very devoted man, and he had greatly contributed to the progress of his land and of the Church into it. It was totally normal to have a ceremony in which we could honor again his memory, for all the great things he had done. After putting on him his chasuble and miter, he took his episcopal cross and entered into the Church by the back door from the sacristy. Arriving, he saw that there were already some persons in the cathedral, aomong which Ernestvs, relative of the late Imperial Majesty. He nodded to him, greeting him with a smile as he was getting to him.

Your Highness, it is a pleasure to have you here. I hope the travel was not too harsh.

Ernest bowed his head as Yut arrived and kissed his seal ring as sign of respect and faith.
"Eminence, the pleasure and honor is mine. Thank you for the residence - the journey was a wonderful - even if cold - time."

Matthijs recognized the family of the late Emperor. Some of them he had already seen in the service of his Master and his Mistress. The blond man from Holland bowed in front of the nobles. He is of common birth and shows therefore always his respect to the nobles. But as representative of his Master, and today especially of his Mistress Johanna de Brancion, executor of the last will, he was allowed to attend the ceremony somewhere in the front rows. He searches his place and sits down as the prelate enters the basilica. This would clearly be the sign that the ceremony will takes place soon.

It probably was fate that her ship was near Italy when the time came for this sombre funeral. A spirited horste brought her from Orbetello to Rome, where she got lost immediately. The city bustled with activity, there were more churches than residential buildings, and her University Latin did not help very much to find the way. "Quaerens Basilicam di Sann Dschowanni dej Maatiri" she repeated several times, and each time the people looked either confused or pointed to another direction than before.

But then there it was. Huge, white, beautiful and glorious beyond belief. For a while the duchess only stood there and enjoyed the view, then she entered quietly.

A few attendants were already here. She recognized Akarin, already seated, and Ernestvs spoke with some cleric, a high ranking one judged by his magnificent dress.

Pat greeted Akarin, whom she had met only a few times, with friendly words, and then hesitated, wondering wether to sit down or to join Ernestvs.

They had traveled with the family, even if the journey was long and the Countess could slowly get used to the idea of it laced her yet the throat as they came to the spot here.
Slowly, she walked over to the small crowd of people who had no eye for the beautiful sunshine and the scenery and ancient walls of Rome. She saw the Ernestus talked, walked up to Patroni and welcomed those. Akarin she had met in the taverns of Bach and even he was nodded with a small smile and offered a hand in greeting. Low, the air was forced into the lungs to bring hoping the lump in the breast to burst.

Rome, the eternal city. The dead emperor was buried here or to say it more precisely, his heart was buried. A man, of whom Tiberius thought, that he would not burn for his sins. It would be more likely that god would grand him grace as Comyr granted grace to others in his life. Truly, the emperor had flaws, but who does not have some. They were friends and Comyr supported him when others did not and Tiberius never forgot about that and will never forget it. Tiberius did not come alone, to his very surprise he saw some Wettins and Keelin he greeted them

After a long journey and spending lots of days on horse back, the blonde finally reached the Eternal City. It was her first time in Rome, but the reason for travelling was a sad one: The furneral of the late Emperor's heart.

It took some time until an accomodation for woman and horse were found. But just in time the blonde dressed for the occasion, left the lodging to look for the Basilica San Giovanni. She looked around and was amazed. The town seemed to have hundreds of churches. But which one was this special Basilica? Several times the wrong way was shown. At the end the woman sighed and paid a young Roman boy bringing her to the basilica.

Quietly she opened the heavy door of the church and entered. Looking around she recognized her friend Pat, nodded to her and sat down in the last row.

Matthijs watched the persons entering the basilica. Slowly but steady there were more and more people. Still the ceremony hadn't started yet, but that wasn't a problem for the man from Holland. He had time. In fact he had a lot of time. His Lord and Lady would want that he spent as much time here as possible. He still sees the face of Johanna when she gave him the urn with the heart to bring it to Rome. He had seen that his lady had cried. A lot. Her hands had shaken back then. The man who would be honoured here today meant a lot to her. And to his lord as well. - But women cry more. He thought he had never seen Findecano crying. But Johanna... she was a young but tough woman. Only a few things are able to upset her that way.

When a blond woman enters the basilica he recognized her. Camma is one of the best friends of his Duchess. Maybe he should say hello - later, after the ceremony.

Ysabet had entered the Basilica San Giovanni together with Yut from the sacristy. She had stayed at Yuts residence most of the day, where their guests had been housed, to greet them and then came with him here to the ceremony. She had let Yut speak, but also nodded to Ernesvs, Akarin, Patroni the other members of the Wettins, Tiberius, Matthijs, the servant, who brought the hearth and the other to her unknown guests of the ceremony.
She looked around. Soon they would beginn.

Far from Rome she sat in front of the warm fireplace and saw the stepson to play. It was never great to debate that they would travel to Rome. They had been in the past months traveling so much that a lot of work had been left lying in Württemberg (at least for Ronda). Apart from the fact that the newly married couple had to look first of all, how was the common life together. Even if it could possibly have expected so Ronda had not struggled to travel to the south. Although a large part of her wanted to be here, so not a minor portion was glad not to be. His heart was buried. His heart. The most important organ in the body of a human. And also according to the will and all the poems ... owned a part of it. At the heart of the love and all the best lived in a human. Rome was a good place. But Rome was far away. And she could not prevent it hurt to know that particular part so far away. It was so good not to be there. You would only go back tear wounds that were about to heal. With scars ... but without the sharp pain when you touched them.

Nevertheless, even if she was not physically on site, so it was at least in spirit. Since the incident before the wedding (left was a very fine scar that you only looked like if you knew it was there) had Comyr managed as best they could to drive them out of her thoughts. No brooding about the past that are no longer allowed to change, no dreams of a future that would remain fictitious forever. Meanwhile, her thoughts were mainly about the present. She attended and took care of friends that went bad and laughed and rejoiced with them when all was well again. She lived her life somehow, even if it would be a lie, they would argue that not sneaked off and on images in dreams and the scars ached when you pressed it. But that would probably always remain so. So it was with death.

She had thought to send Jory to Rome. But she had strayed from the thought. Although Jory was still in the Guard of Waldsee, he was a member of Ronda page. If he had sent him to Rome, it would Matrim noticed and that they would have had to explain to him. However, they did not speak to him about the deceased emperor, nor lie to him. They had planned Matrim to be a good wife and to put him at the head of all men. He probably serve up lies states the contrary. But they had caused as Margravine of Meissen, that on this day the grave of the Emperor should be especially decorated in the cathedral and in the morning Mass prayer should be said for him. That was something they can always before her husband would justify.

So - and with the idea that the Ronda dedicated Comyr that day - she and the Margraviate of the emperor in their own way respect and affection. And so apologies in their own way, the absence in Rome.

Real German

Reutlingen
