On many occasions the voices about the death of his friend had reached Mgr Edoardo in the past, but every time His Eminence Borgia had come out with a funny sentence and a warm gentle smile to testify his presence. Indeed, the time for Raniero run fast and that day had been the one he had slept on his final resting.
So, in a deep poignancy, His Eminence Borromeo Galli had joined the preparation to pay the last respect to such a huge member of the Holy Church, who had reached the side of the Most High at the Sun Paradise.
And now, while a small tear had been dropping from his eyes, he silently said

Lord, do not divert Your eyes from our friend.

And, again

Grant us the hope to see him next to Thee forever and ever.

adding the words of heartfelt intimate prayers.

Michael entered the basilica slowly and silently.
His eyes met several looks full of pain and tears.
He could see his beloved cousin Elsa and stretching up went to sit silently beside him trying his hand.
He shook it gently and then finally release the tears that began to scratch his face.

---

Lord, do not divert your eyes from our friend...
The young Arduino prayed, he prayed with all his strength.
Lord, do not divert your eyes from our friend...

Countess Hamea climbed the stairs of the churchyard wearily, pale, tired face stood out in the sober mourning dress. The person who had come to pay their last respect, Cardinal Raniero Borgia, had always been his spiritual guide. He had guided, advised, and now the thought that she would no longer able to hear his calm voice and make treasure of his advice made her feel heartbroken. She went to church and she was struck by the smell of flowers and candles that were burning, the silence and the twilight made her shiver and outcome a moment, then he saw his son Arduino in prayer and joined him, sitting beside him. She knelt and clasped her hands in prayer.

---------------

Tu vas me manquer terriblement.

The elderly cardinal was left on the sidelines for most of the ceremony. It had been a precise choice... It 'true that Quarion had been his Diocesan Vicar, it was true that he had to propose it to the purple ... He had been silent all the time, in prayer, remembering the good times when Quarion was Camerlengo and he made him think with the club... And the hard times, when together they had faced the Mano Nera and the coup attempt in Venice by Spinozisti later.

He rose from kneeler with fatigue and, leaning on his cane, he approached the basket leaving you fall into a holy card of Aristotle and Joshua Christos... Then reached for the coffin and whispered, "Wait for us my friend ... You've only preceded us in Solar Paradise... ".

Then returned to his seat, he knelt with difficulty, to restart to pray.

The Cardinal-Camerlengo was surprised to see the rushed gesture of the woman, but thinking that the pain had made her forget the time of the celebration, she continued, addressing the faithful

Brethren, if we are here, is to surround with our friendship a family who is in sorrow. It is also to remind us that God remembers everything good there was in the life of our brother Quarion and to ask Him to give him a good reception.

She paused a moment and went on Now we will celebrate the Light Sign and she waited for advancing who had to light the candles.

*****

She had listened with bowed head the words of the Camerlengo. When She was finished, she came out of the desk and took a candle placed beside the altar. Looking at the casket containing the mortal remains of His Eminence, the Cardinal, the cousin ... the man Raniero she was attacked by memories that dated back to the beginning of everything. It was hard to take him on the last trip.

She walked over to each of the four candles in the corners of the coffin and lit them one by one.

Then, after bringing the candle in place, she still came up a moment touching the coffin and returned to his seat.

The four candles were lit, and the flickering light drew lines and shadows on the catafalque.

Cardinal Fenice said

Here is the Sign of Light.
Friendship is the light of the world, is the flame that warms our heart. Now it illuminates the road to Quarion to lead him straight to the Kingdom of God!

She then approached the basket, and immediately before filing it with the Aristotelian medal, went on to say

That is the sign of the Faith.
Quarion, we deposit this Aristotelian medal on your coffin. In it we remember Aristotle and Christos, may it be for you salvation and eternal life.

That is the sign of Friendship.
Quarion, we deposit the gifts on your coffin, a sign of our friendship, a sign of our prayer, a sign of our hearts.

She bent down again and placed in the basket a round loaf of bread and a parchment, saying

Quarion, I leave you the gift of my first lesson as your pupil, because poor is the one who does not respect and honour his teacher.
We had turned against, in the past, we had disagreements and tense relations, but I do not forget that you were my first teacher, and a great example of work and clear and effective diplomatic vision. You saw in me a promise and I owe you the way I started and still I walk serving the Church.

After a few moments she turned to those present and added

Now the friends of the deceased can leave their gift of friendship in the basket. The content will be distributed to the poor after the ceremony.
Who wants to, can come close, leave a gift and say a few words.

*****

His Eminence Borromeo Galli reached the basket and placed a richfully crafted copy of the main rules of the Roman Diplomacy and the duties of a cleric who had to care to political relationships.

You called me to join your work for the goodness of the Holy Institution among all the people of different places of the world: may everyone who is yet sitting next to Our Lord welcome Your arrival and help You to protect us that are still trying to gather all our brothers and sisters under His hands.

Eloin approached the coffin when Fenice invited to say some words about the deceased, and put down a small portrait of Saint-Arnvald, the boss of the Cistercian order there.

" Quarion, you were Cistercian monk since August, 1457, you were an abbot of Fornovo, and you contributed to the translation in Italian of the lessons of the Cistercian seminar. I remember you as a simple man, devoted to God, of a big faith. You were a beautiful person, and you helped our order to become established in Italy.

Can God welcome you in his paradise, you can be in peace after all this beautiful accomplished work. "

And she got back her place, letting somebody else express himself.

He slowly approaches the basket of friendship and laying inside that scroll that had changed the course of their lives: to discover themselves brothers after so much sharing, unknowing that the thread that bound them was not only spiritual.

That's my brother, the memory of what we were.
I will have forever in my heart your words as a guide to the future now towards sunset.
Then leave sacks of flour for the poor.
See you soon Quarion!
