The Hierarchy of the Holy Mother Church and the addresses of its clerics.

The hierarchical structures of the clergy are defined and guided by the dignity of the ministry, which at first sight seems very complex, and so this document is intended to assist all in navigating the hierarchy of the Holy Mother Church. In this presentation of the hierarchical structures, we should also discuss the subtle differences in the forms of addressing the clergy and what things should be considered in dealing with ecclesiastical dignitaries.

It applies fundamentally that every cleric – regardless of which rank he may be or which office he occupies – is always a representative of the Holy Romand and Universal Aristotalian Church, so you should always meet him corteous and with respect. One should by no means turn aggressive, abusive or palpable towards a clergyman, furthermore clerics are always addressed with „your“ and „you“. However, there is no reason to appeal to a cleric with „you“ if he has offered you this personal address. As well family members and friends of a cleric may use the more personal „you“.

In the hierarchical structures of the Holy Mother Church, two types of clergy are differentiated. First, this document will deal with the secular clergy and show its differnces.

The organization of the secular clergy

        the pope:
The Pope is he head of the Holy Mother Church and representative of God on earth, as such he is the highest clerical authority and spiritual leader of all aristotes. His address isHis/Your Holiness.

        the cardinals:
Cardinals are the support of the Holy Pope in the guidance of the Holy Mother Church and will be addressed with His/Your Eminence. Because of their respective responsibilities, the Cardinals carry different titles, which would be:
          • the cardinal bishop who is in charge to lead one of the congregations or a dicastery.
          • Cardinal-Priest who is in charge of a geodogmatical zone.
          • Cardinal-Deacon supporting the cardinal priest of his zone.
          • Cardinal-Emeritus has no active ministries and acts as a counsellor within the Curia.

Note: If you meet a cardinal, it is important to kneel and wait for the cardinal to offer you the ring to kiss. Only on request one rises again.

        the bishops:
Bishops are the heirs of the apostles, they have been entrusted with the responsibility and leadership of the dioceses. Their address isHis/Your Excellency. It is distinguished on the basis of the respective obligations and the type of diocese in the titles of the bishops.
          • Primate-bishop who unites a primacy.
          • Vice-Primate Bishop who unites a vice-primacy.
          • Metropolitan Archbishop presiding over an ecclesiastical province (Metropolitan Archbishopric)
          • Suffragan archbishop who heads a suffragan archbishopric.
          • Suffragan Bishop, who heads a suffragan bishopric.
          • Bishop In Partibus, who presides over a diocese In Partibus.
          • Bishop Emeritus, an honorary bishop who no longer presides over a diocese.
          • Bishop Sine Cura, a bishop of honor appointed directly by the Pope.

          1. Note: ] If you meet a bishop, it is important to kneel and wait for the bishop to offer you the ring to kiss. Only on request one rises again
          2. Note Care should be taken to address the primate withHis/Your Excellency the Primate and the Vice-Primate with His/Your Excellency the vice-primat.

        The General Vicar:
General Vicars are the episcopal representatives of an archdiocese and are to be addressed with Reverend.

        The diocesan vicar:
Diocesan vicars are the episcopal representatives of a bishopric and are to be addressed with Reverend.

        The priest:
Priests lead a parish within a diocese, and are to be addressed with Reverend.

        The Vicar:
Vicars are appointed by a priest with the consent of the bishop to assist the priest in his duties in his parish and are to be addressed with Wohlehrwürden.

Note: All these offices within the secular clergy are carried out by ordained men and women, so that as well the address Father or Mother is directly related to them. Only the Pope gets addressed with Holy Father or Holy Mother.

the orthodox clerics of the secular clergy:
          Premier Archdeacon:
A premier archdeacon is the episcopal representative of an archbishop, his address is Reverence.

          Archdeacon:
An archdeacon is the episcopal representative of an archbishop, his address is Reverence.

          Deacon:
Deacons are named by a priest in accordance with the bishop responsible for the parish to assist the priest in his commitments. It is as well possible for a bishop to appoint a deacon in a parish and give him sole responsibility for it. The address of a deacon is Reverence

Note: The orthodox clergy can also be addressed with Brother or Sister.

In the next section, this document will be dedicated to the regular clergy, the clergy of ecclesiastical orders and monasteries, in a way that even these subtle differences are explained.

The organization of the regular clergy

        the rector:
