---------------------------⊰Coronation Ceremony of Franziscus, King of Aragon - 12.09.1468⊱

---------------------------------------

The day had come! Cardinal Arduino Della Scala proceeded by carriage along the streets that separated his Palace on the Tiber from the Basilica of Saint Titus, the most imposing and sacred place in all of Rome.

He wore the sacred vestments, covered with red brocade silk embroidered with gold threads. The red silk gloves covered his diaphanous hands and his fingers were embellished with rings with precious stones. The blonde curls were held together under the mitre by a black satin bow.

The carriage was escorted by armed guards who sported the coat of arms of the Marquisate of Santa Marinella and the Patrimonium Titi.

The Basilica was majestic and magnificent. The pontifical banners and those of the Kingdom of Aragon were blowing in the wind from the high columns.

It was a bright sunny day at the end of summer and the population gathered in front of the churchyard to celebrate the event.

The cardinal entered the cathedral walking slowly to admire the church where soon the coronation ceremony of the King of Aragon would take place..

She was very excited and when she reached her assigned seat she sat down waiting for its beginning.

After, came Cardinal Fenice, smiling and serene.
She waved passing between the benches and went to take her seat, while she could not help but admire for the hundredth time the majestic beauty of the Basilica, festively decorated and full of splendour.
Beauty spoke of the Most High, predisposing the soul to Virtue.

The Cardinal entered the holiest of all temples, the Cathedral of St. Titus in Rome. The Basilica. More dignity, more grace, more beating heart is not possible.

Coronations were always something special and as vice-dean of the holy curia he represented them - but even more. The spreading of the faith was his responsibility, so he was close to the Kingdom of Aragon and he was happy that the coronation took place here in Rome.

As he walked through the Basilica, he stopped for a brief moment at the image of St. John, as usual, and smiled. He crossed himself before the altar before joining his brothers and sisters in faith.

Cardinal Gianvitus was asked to concelebrate the ceremony alongside with His Eminence Arduino. He arrived in the basilica and went to the sacrarium to wear the paraments for the occasion: the alb, the green stole and the green cope, and then wore the white mitre on his head and prepared the same paraments for the other celebrant, and waited for he to be ready.

The Archbishop of Valencia made his presence in the Saint Titus Basilica to accompany the coronation of the King of the Crown of Aragon, he made his entrance in silence, greeted Cardinal Arduido with a small bow and then the cardinals present there.

The King had crossed the Mediterranean for the coronation.
About twenty battle carracks escorted him, carrying the nobility of Aragon and their suites.
For every Aristotelian, Rome was the capital of the world and the Pope the father of the peoples. It was therefore quite naturally that he wished that this great moment might be blessed by the Holy Father and thus show his attachment to the Holy Church.
He had spent the morning surrounded by his servants in order to prepare him and waited in a palace near the Basilica for someone to come and fetch him...

Bianca ordered to wear the Company’s gala uniforms for all her knights,  white and green with the Lions' insignia, but without any kind of armies...everything was ready for that such important moment, but in those last moments that separated her from the ceremony, the Duchess went to her studio to dispatch the last office before she went.

Then she checked that the Royal procession was ready and perfect, the banners of Franciscus II vibrated in the sky and the horses stoned. It was still a very hot day and for many years she's missing from the Italian lands. This caused her enthusiasm and annoyance, at the same time.

So she got on the carriage, ready to cross the Roman roads, and in short went to the Cathedral of St. Titus. After the formalities of the announcement, she took place in order to follow the ceremony in the best way possible.

On the other side of the Mediterranean, she's ordered to her ships at the defence of their ports, to leave the moorings and go to Valencia's harbour. This days, their cannons were loaded and ten shots were planned to greet the new King, in the Aragon's land too.

The Cathedral of St. Titus appeared her like a dream. She entered the huge Basilica and walked slowly down the aisle, greeting with a nod and a smile everyone she met.

She went to the place assigned and immersed herself in prayer, for a long time.

She was happy, but also humbly excited...she's a poor and little priest but the King had chosen her as confessor in Aragonese land and now she had followed him to one of the most sacred places.

An unforgettable day for the her and for her King...

His father was to be crowned soon. For this great occasion he had put on his ceremonial attire on which his baptism medal was pinned. He entered the Basilica and respectfully greeted the Duchess Bianca and the Princess Flaminia, both of whom were greatly admired by the Crown. He also made a sign to the prelates present.

When she received the news that the king wanted the coronation to take place in Rome, she was very happy, because she knew that this would be a great opportunity to see again the youngest of the brothers, the little Vatican promise. Perhaps it was presumptuous to think of Felipe in this way, but the young Marquise's heart was filled with pride in knowing that her brother was so appreciated and devoted to his faith and duties. On the other hand, she was happy because she knew that she would see the cardinals that she appreciated so much, and that she would meet others from whom she would learn and advance in her spiritual journey.
Although she would have liked to wear one of the dresses inherited from her mother, which in her dignity as queen was dressed in the finest brocades, this time Inés attended the ceremony dressed in a heraldic tabard of the Crown of Aragon.

Mounted on her dappled horse, a magnificent stallion from the stables of Trujillo, she took her place in the Aragonese royal retinue, behind the king and his royal advisors, and behind the prince of Viana. At his side rode Sancho, herald of the kingdom of Navarre, and with whom she always felt comfortable and safe in his company.

As everyone dismounted to enter the most sacred place in the Eternal City, the young Marquise also dismounted and went ahead to fulfil her role, but also to greet and thank Cardinal Arduino for his good disposition, as well as to thank the other cardinals for their assistance. Inés greeted both Cardinal Arduino and Cardinal Montfort with a smile and kissing their ring. Then, she went to dispose the final details, such as assure that the royal crown was well preserved by the guards. While every others were taking their seats, Inés stood up looking for the crown and the scepter, before they were in hands of the king.

Kalixtus smiled at Ines, his capable student. Of course she was here, he saw many familiar faces. When she did her reference, he painted a cross on her forehead and blessed her quietly. Meanwhile he contemplated her with a mysterious smile on his lips. He liked the girl.

But this was not surprising, Ines was a creative spirit and all creative spirits were especially blessed by God's grace in Kalixtus' eyes.

    The Cardinal smiled at Ines.

Be blessed Illustrious Inés - he called her with the formal tone of the first letter they exchanged; a tone which then became informal in the following letters - and welcome to Rome!

    You see?
    - he spread his arms - at the end we meet in person and that makes me very happy! I hope you will find everything to your liking.

He took his friend Kalixtus under his arm:
I think it is time to proceed.

The King had left the palace a few minutes earlier.

The royal guard on horseback proudly surrounded it as the bunches of lictors once protected the Pontifex Maximus of the Roman Empire.

The royal procession halted in front of the basilica, the King descended from his mount and the trumpets accompanied the ascent of the steps and then withdrew.

The doors opened wide...

Only the King of the Crown of Aragon made his first steps in the abode of the Most High, dipped his hand in holy water and then knelt down making the sign of the believers.

He rose up and advanced slowly towards the altar. His cape was held by a few pages of his Palace.

He nodded his head with respect to the prelates present and to the nobles of the Crown who surrounded him.

The King then greeted the Supreme Pontiff, bowing respectfully to him.

Pontifex Maximus, receive this day by my presence the devoted and respectful greetings of our peoples.

She had been warned very late which caused a sort of setback in the schedule that she and her husband should have followed when leaving Languedoc. Still, she could have been present - the contrary would have been boring although the Papal Choir could have faced - and it was more or less at the time of His Eminence Gropuis' arrival in the Basilica that her choristers and she passed through the majestic doors of the Basilica.

The last time she entered it was to renew her oath to the Most Holy Father and see her daughter being brought up. She smiled at the thought and settled herself behind her desk, she clapped her hands gently so that silence returned. The building was already huge so imagine the resonance ! Several minutes passed before the echo of the sound of her hands was lost and smiling, she addressed the singers.

We are here for a coronation of His Majesty the King of Aragon. I tell you every time, but stand up straight, shoulders back and head straight. Don't forget to open your mouth as well. Do not force, the resonance will help us.

And she continued her advice, took advantage that the guests had not yet arrived for some vocal tune-ups then, once everything was set, everyone could go and sit in the stalls usually reserved for the monks while the ceremony began.

There, her head raised to the heavens, she detailed the golds and ochres, the whiteness of the columns and the beauty of the statues, and she smiled at so many marvels thus gathered.

Time passed, the Basilica began to fill up and, at the signal given to her, she resumed her place behind her desk. Noticing her Choir in a semicircle in front of her, she signaled to them that everything could
begin ...
