The time had come, the Festival of St. Titus was taking place, a time when the Sovereign Pontiff performed a solemn ceremony to name his nobles, as well as to receive the homage of the remaining nobles who looked after the fiefs entrusted to them in the Papal States. And as in every event where the nobility is gathered, it is known that jousting must take place. A sport of the nobility, but absolutely exceptional even in Rome, since this was the first time that such a tournament had been held, a fact that made Inès proud.

With a gesture of agreement, she looked around her, paying particular attention to where she was. The pontifical nobility and the champions representing the participating clergy would be gathered in the great monument that the Roman Empire had given to history, the Circus Maximus. Of colossal dimensions, and in an unparalleled demonstration of Roman pragmatism and architecture, all the tiers were arranged around the arena, at a height where the audience could see the arena from a distance.

The stone infrastructure, which had seen centuries of history pass before it, now welcomed the public from Rome and from all over the world, both from the Papal States and from those kingdoms with which treaties and agreements had been signed.

Everything was ready to welcome the horses and horsemen, the public and the cheers, as well as His Holiness the Pope, who would open the occasion.

The Herald of Jousting, Inès, approached the Pope's tribune to supervise that everything was to his liking, and to await, also, the opening speech.

Small manual (or FAQ I did it again)

    1. I am not a pontifical nobleman - can I participate?
You can, as long as Rome has a signed nobility recognition agreement with your country. You can check the treaties here.

    2. I am a priest, bishop, cardinal - can I participate?
This is Rome, priests and rock 'n' roll (or something like that). YES, YES, YES. You only have to look for a champion because you can't shed blood, and a spear is a weapon.

    3. Where do I send my registration?
Send it to the Jousting Pontifical Herald, Ines.. or you can just post it here, as simple as that!

    4. Coat of Arms size, what does it mean?
We need your coat of arms since Jousting is a sport where heralds also participate. Well it's not completely like that but you know what I mean.
So your coat of arms, without ornaments, should be 180px high.

______

The Pope came to the rostrum prepared for him. This is a box with a privileged view, where he sits, assisted by the members of the papal court and the cardinals of the congregations. When the time came, he nodded to the directions of the herald of jousting and approached to be seen, and gave the inaugural address.

Dear children, dear participants, visitors and public, Clergy and Nobility.

The feast of Saint Titus is a festival in memory of the First Pope and the Prince of the Apostles. But it is also a festival that reminds us of, and thanks, all those who do service for the Church, in whatever way they can, making it greater every day. Whether they are the messengers of the Sacred Word, or the shield and arm that takes the blows and fights heresy. The Church is one and great, it endures in time in the face of every attack, and that is something that no one should forget.
Today we also celebrate the first jousting tournament that takes place here, in the Circus Maximus, a tournament where each competitor hopes to honour his colours and name. The Pontificate is proud of its nobility and of those who uphold it.

Let the games begin, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

_____

Cari figli, cari partecipanti, visitatori e pubblico, Clero e Nobiltà.

Queridos hijos, queridos participantes, visitantes y público, Clero y Nobleza.

The next meetings will be published during the evening.

16th of finals (1/2)
Citation:

The referee indicates the competitors' positions for this first meeting. Both nobles take up their positions and, on signal, gallop off. Erwann, with great skill, charges at the Countess, knocking her off balance, but not falling. Christabella defends herself and also hits the Duke's shield with her lance, with the same result. The referee tells them to return for a second throw, again they hit each other without any of them falling! The jousting herald's assistants signal the same score for both, who return to positions and are given the start a third time.

The Duke is unbalanced and breaks his lance against his opponent's shield, but the Countess has taken better aim than he has. The referee raises the flag in favour of Christabella, who has scored more points (4 points vs 2 points).

By technical victory, Christabella Jauzac is declared the winner.

Filippo de' Medici, as champion of His Eminence Arduino Della Scala, Marquis of Santa Marinella, Baron Palatin of Saint-Jean de Latran, Cardinal-Bishop of Saint Sylphaël Hors-les-Murs, Count of Civitavecchia
    VS
Fabien de la Fléchère Marigny, Duc du Bourbonnais-Auvergne, Seigneur de Brezons & de la Crête

The Cardinal's champion gallops at full gallop against his opponent, his lance collides with the Duke's shield but does not fall. Back in position, the referee calls the start. Filippo smashes his lance into Fabien's shoulder, injuring him with a concussion. Astonishing the whole audience, the Duke recovers and in the third round aims his lance at the centre of Filippo de' Medici's shield, who only manages to break another lance. The referee meets with his assistants and they all conclude that Fabien has won by score (5 points vs 2 points).

By technical victory, Fabien de la Fléchère Marigny is declared the winner.

    VS
Arthur Hadrien de Castelnau-Montmiral, Count of Bearn
    VS
Hector de Troy-Orsenac, as champion of Inès Álvarez de Toledo Josselinière, Palatine Baroness of St John of Latran

The Count of Bearn boldly aims at his adversary's shield, and the lance shatters into thousands of splinters, wounding his adversary (minor injury). But in the course of this scene, the Count falls, victim of the impact of his adversary, dismounting him ipso facto.

By the fall of his adversary, Hector of Troy-Orsenac is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS
Fedrick , as champion of His Holiness Sixtus IV, Sovereign Pontiff
    VS
Alexandre Maximilien Von Ostenmark-Sparte , Duke of Palestrina

The Pope's champion receives a first blow to his shoulder, the Duke of Palestrina's lance breaks. The referee raises the flag announcing a second bout: once again the result is repeated, neither of the two is dismounted and Sparte breaks his lance, injuring Fedrick (minor injury). In the third encounter all is settled: Fredrick breaks his lance and wounds Alexandre (minor injury). But Alexandre charges at his opponent and hits him with such force that he destabilises his opponent, without falling. The referee announces the score: 4 points vs 2 points.

By technical victory, Fedrick is declared the winner.

16th of finals (2/2)
Citation:

    VS
Gonzalvo de Cordova, as champion of His Eminence Roderic d'Aleixar Batista, Cardinal Diacon of San Possidonio de Montserrat
    VS
Anne Cordeilla de Cassel, Lady of Wahagnies

The duel between the two seems evenly matched, both charging and touching their opponent's shield with no major result, no injuries. The referee signals them to return to their posts and gives them the start again; in the second duel, the two reach each other and break their spear into thousands of splinters, wounding both, but without further incident. In a subsequent charge, the two again touch and break splinters. The score between the two is equal and then the referee decides that it will be resolved by a sword duel, at first blood.

Cordeilla advances confidently and hits his opponent hard, unable to defend himself due to the surprise and receiving a first blow.
But Gonzalvo recovers and responds, swinging his sword with determination, launching a flurry of movements that reach the Lady of Wahagnies.

By duel and undisputed victory, after four consecutive touches and a slight wound to his opponent's cheek, Gonzalvo de Cordova is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS
Anastasya de Cassel, Marquise of Melun, Viscountess of Lille and Brunelle, Baroness of Aire-sur-la-Lys
    VS
Idril de Dénéré-Sparte Aleïeva, Viscountess of Caprarola

At a gallop, the Marquise advances and strikes the Viscountess of Caprarola with her lance, breaking her lance, but the Viscountess is more skilful and dismounts her adversary.

As her opponent falls, Idril de Dénéré-Sparte Aleïeva is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS
Mondor de Caelus, Baron of Alviano
    VS
Milor de Caelus, as champion of Constance Élyse Von Frayner Del Casalièr, Palatine Countess of St Jonh of Latran, Lady of Ginclà & Vergèze

Milor breaks his splinter, causing a minor wound to Mondor. Mondor manages to unbalance his opponent, without throwing him. The referee signals them to return to their places for the second bout: Milor again breaks his spear, but Mondor manages to unbalance the Countess' champion.

By the fall of his opponent, Mondor of Caelus is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS
Runy de Nivellus, as championess of His Eminence Tymothé-Lovian Mélagant de Nivellus de Montvidor, Cardinal-Bishop of Saint Trufaldini à la Porte Latine & Baron of Montfort
    VS
Eavan Maeve Gaelig de Champlecy, Viscountess of Meldola, Rians & Salon de Provence, Baronness of Carpentras

Last match of the elimination round. The referee signals the start to the opponents and they gallop off: the two opponents hit each other but neither falls. Back at their posts, they gallop off at the exit of the jousting herald: Eavan breaks his lance against the shield of the Cardinal's champion, but his strength is unstoppable.

By the fall of her opponent, Runy of Nivellus is declared the winner.

--------

On the edge of the licea, the Count of Bearn was waiting. A little nervous but nevertheless sure of himself. Time passed slowly, intoxicating him little by little. The clamour of the crowd, the cracking of spears, the clanking of iron, the thud of the falls. Everything was capable of arousing his ardour. Cruel excitement and sweet panic gradually took place in the young man's heart. A strange mixture, difficult to contain. He had to wait a few more moments that seemed like an eternity. Then it was finally his turn to enter the fray. With the help of a squire, he mounted his steed, retrieved the spear that was handed to him, adjusted his shield and heeled his mount to approach the tribune. There he respectfully greeted the Sovereign Pontiff, as well as Ines, then turned to Anne, whom he greeted by raising his spear high.
« Pray for me, my lady. »

He folded back the visor of the helmet with his hand and then swooped down to reach the end of the licea. The count, wearing tabard gules and gold, broad shield on his flank and spear raised to the sky, saluted his opponent. All phlegm was gone. The nervousness of the rider was transmitted to his mount. As soon as the flags were lowered, the count peppered him with a bloody flank. Pushed to a gallop, the charge was launched. Picking up speed, Arthur threw his spear horizontally and wedged himself into his stirrups. The shock came swiftly. The spear shattered as it hit his opponent's shield hard, but the sudden impact threw him off balance and he soon found himself biting into the sand of the arena. The fall was hard but without any noticeable injury. Breathless, the young count got up quickly and freed himself from the straitjacket of the helmet, while his squire retrieved the steed from the end of the field. Good-naturedly, Arthur noticed his opponent's small wound and gave him a frank smile.
« Fate was on your side this day, Your Highness. I hope to take my revenge in a future joust ! »

Allez on y va

Citation:

At the time of the launching of the jousts, Anne gratified Arthur once this one found, of a glance to say the least filled with emotion when the Pope pronounced the inaugural speech. Sensitive by nature, the young woman was overwhelmed by a mixture of adrenalin and pride. Once the opening pronounced, she went to find Ines to gratify her with a chaste kiss & from the heart to the cheek, delighted to recover her presence far from the Louvre.

Arthur vs Hector - Tribunes

Although it was still necessary for the lady of Wahagnies to finalize her preparation for her passage, she came to take place in the first rows during the passage of the count of Béarn. With her hands on the railing, she nervously began to bite the inside of her cheek as she saw the edge of the lice. As exhilarating as these noble games were, the risk was nestled in the moment the lance was lowered. As Arthur approached the rostrum, Anne followed his movements & replied spontaneously with a hand under his throat, "Be worthy & careful." In other words, victor or vanquished, honor above all.
Then began the brief minute that always seemed to last an eternity. The fingertips scratch the wood of the railing & the eyes split with concern. The advance is fast & the exchange makes fall Arhur. The raised shoulders, she holds a breath the time to see him moving & rising again without evil. Dignified & Prudent, he had been.

Anne vs Gonzalvo

In end of lice, Anne counted backwards to try to appease the palpitant. The hand on the dress of her steed, she observed the end of the pass which preceded hers without really noticing it. The lips move, mute, all along an umpteenth prayer addressed to the Most High whereas here she is called. She signs herself then, and thanks to the help of a squire, she hoists herself on her horse. She adjusts her seat, her feet before taking back her spear & shield painted with the colors of Wahagnies. Anne inhales as she urges the horse forward, passing in front of the tribune where she greets the Pope & Ines, referee & dear friend. Taking then her place, she turns the glance in direction of Arthur who hovers a few seconds. The young woman prefers the silences which say enough, that the moved words. In her nervousness, she would have been able to make herself ridiculous.

Put in place, she pulls briefly on the reins to contain her mount still a few moments, thus greeting her adversary. At the time of the ordered departure, Anne maintains herself & adjusts her holds, just like her lance. The shock being insufficient for both of them, a second round is announced. Again & with a measured satisfaction, she takes her place at the end. She then ignores all that surrounds her to hope to make fly during this pass. New start ordered, and she applies with the same assiduity her maneuvers. Touched & touching, she turns her mount around at the end of the course and lets out a grumble when she notices the insufficiency. Descent of her steed, she then lightens herself of her material with a more sudden apprehension. Swallowing, she recovers her sword that the squire carries to her while making leave the mount & stands ready.

Anne certainly has this advantage; skilful & flexible, she chooses not to let her opponent have any respite by striking first. Tasting little of blade weapons, she is unable to do more as her opponent follows through and ends the joust with the final blow. When the blade passes to her face, Anne drops her sword & becomes tetanized, breathing heavily.

Slowly regaining consciousness, she removes her gauntlets to pass her fingertips on her cheek. If the wound is not impressive, the place is sufficiently irrigated to release a little blood. She addresses a half smile to her adversary slipped to him with : "You are a great opponent, thank you sir."

She lowered the face & left the licea to join the camp. The hour is in the care.

-------------
After his defeat by Hector, Arthur dismissed his squire and moved to the edge of the licea to watch the next bout. As the Duke of Palestrina faced the champion of His Holiness, the young prince gazed at the remains of the Circus Maximus, letting his soul wander for a moment. But when Anne approached the arena in her turn, the young man's gaze followed every move. Thus adorned in steel, carrying a spear and a shield in the colours of her fief, the lady of Wahagnies, like Minerva or Penthelesia, was a fateful beauty. The warrior woman advanced onto the sand of the licea. Their eyes caught, embraced and chatted for a moment. But no words passed their lips, it was useless. She was nervous. He was fascinated. Apprehension nevertheless quickly won over the heart of the young man, who watched the duel between Anne and Gonzalvo de Cordova with awe. Against all odds, the young woman played skillfully, hitting her opponent at every turn, but the sword fight was nevertheless fateful and Anne drew first blood under Arthur's grimacing gaze. He then left the edge of the arena with a light step to join her in the camp.

Alors on joute !

T'as vu ? ON a gagné ! "

16th of Final
Citation:
VS
Gonzalvo de Cordova, as champion of His Eminence Roderic d'Aleixar Batista, Cardinal Diacon of San Possidonio de Montserrat
VS
Anne Cordeilla de Cassel, Lady of Wahagnies

Omnubiled by the beauty of the valley at the foot of the Palatino, Gonzalvo was unprepared for the intoxicating magnificence of the enormous Roman Circus.

The beautiful building was a clear reflection of the enormous power of the Holy Mother Church.

He spent the moments before the fight praying in his tent. Gonzalvo was a seasoned warrior in the Granada Borders, and he was not used to the stage combat of sports tournaments. It was hard to focus without any distraction.

The enormous honor of having been chosen by His Eminence Roderic d´Alexar Batista to represent him as his Champion in that joust in Rome before His Holiness, was probably the most remarkable fact that Gonzalvo had experienced in his life.

After respectfully saluting His Holiness, both combatants prepared to begin combat.

- "Let's go with God" -

Said the squire who was holding the bridle of Gonzalvo's horse and taking it to the starting position.

Gonzalvo felt the crucifix on his chest, under his chainmail, while he secured with his feet the gaits, bridle and reins of his equine. The horse wheezed impatiently. But Gonzalvo was calmed down. His legs felt loaded by the armour that protected his thighs, hanging on both backs of the animal. The squire handed him the spear. Long shaft, almost flexible, compared to the rough weapons finished in metal and sharpened of war.

He rested the base of his spear on the tall pommel of his galician saddle, lowering the headpiece of his helmet with his gaze fixed on his opponent. His mind reacted unconsciously, spurring hard on the animal's flanks when the handkerchief fell, giving the signal to start.

- "Pater noster, qui es in caelis ..."

He prayed silently as he rode looking for the collide with the opponent, for the honor of his Eminence the Cardinal Deacon of San Possidonio de Montserrat.

He experienced the annoying sensation in his stomach of falling into the void just moments before an unsuccessful impact against the shield of his rival, ending the first contact in a draw.

- "Sanctificetur nomen tuum." -

Gonzalvo prayed with each thrust. The next two hits exploded spears without knocking down the opponent, leaving a clear equality. Or maybe leaving a Gonzalvo's inability to defeat that fierce woman. But when luck is decided by the sword, the man from Córdoba felt his confidence grow while he noticed the cold pommel of his tizona between his fingers.

- "Adveniat regnum tuum." -

The duel ended only by luck and instinct. There was no place for sanity there. Just the training and God, if He think you deserve it.

And on that occasion, the Lord sided with the man from Córdoba.

He greeted his opponent, a beautiful and brave woman whom he helped to rise from the ground, and he looked for his Eminence dedicating his victory to him honorably. And after that, he finished his silent private prayer as he handed to the squire the sword and gloves and the helmet.

- "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti, amen."

----------------------------------

-"Pater noster, qui es in caelis..."

-"In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti, amen."

Quarter-finals

Citation:

    VS

Christabella Jauzac épouse Amahir Leffe , Countess of Fontrailles, Ath, Bréval, and Lomagne, Duchess of Hattonchâtel and Châtel-sur-Moselle, Baroness of Fézensaguet and Marolles sur Seine, Lady of Casterà-Leitorès, Berschem and Loos
    VS
Mondor de Caelus, Baron of Alviano

The referee announces the start, and Christabella's reaction is unstoppable. Gracefully, she positions her spear at the ready, aiming it at Baron Mondor's chest. The impact, which is very strong, knocks him down, with Mondor barely able to do anything but hit the Countess's shield.

By the fall of her opponent, Christabella Jauzac is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS

Fabien de la Fléchère Marigny, Duc du Bourbonnais-Auvergne, Seigneur de Brezons & de la Crête
    VS
Fedrick , as champion of His Holiness Sixtus IV, Sovereign Pontiff

The two competitors position themselves and go out to meet, at the referee's command, and although they both hit each other they do not manage to knock each other down. In their second encounter, the result does not change, and the two accumulate the same points as determined by the jousting herald's assistants. In the third encounter, once again, their spears hit the opponent's shield with precision, and in the face of fairness, the herald of jousting determines that there will be a sword fight, at first blood.

    1) The first thrust comes from Fedrick, who with great skill delivers a blow that stuns Fabien.
    2) But Fabien's response is swift, and with his shield he manages to parry Fedrick's next blow, and deliver another in reply (1 vs 1).
    3) The swords, crossed, manage to start a metallic screech; the two combatants stop the blow, and there is a moment in which confusion wins, the public puts their hands to their mouths.... What a thrill! There is silence!
    4) And Fabien responds by demonstrating great skill, passing his sword underneath, in a feint, and hitting the champion of the Holy Father (2 vs 1).
    5) The tension is great, and Fabien takes the opportunity to hit Fedrick again, getting closer and closer to victory (3 vs 1).
    6) But the Duke of Bourbonnais Auvergne is fooled by Fedrick, who hits him back (3 vs 2).
    7) Fedrick rallies, it seems that Fabien's blows have brought out his pride, and he delivers another fatal blow to Fabien (3 vs 3).
8 ) The two opponents separated after their fight, now tired, return to face each other. Fedrick makes a leap, Fabien stops him with his shield, but the Duke of Bourbonnais Auvergne has a gash on his eyebrow and blood runs down his cheek.

Quickly the jousting herald intervenes and stops the two warriors, lest they kill each other. There is no room for doubt: the herald raises Fedrick's arm. The crowd goes wild, it has been a spectacular fight, and gladioli fall for both fighters.

For first blood, Fedrick is declared the winner!

Citation:

    VS
Runy de Nivellus, as championess of His Eminence Tymothé-Lovian Mélagant de Nivellus de Montvidor, Cardinal-Bishop of Saint Trufaldini à la Porte Latine & Baron of Montfort
    VS
Hector de Troy-Orsenac, as champion of Inès Álvarez de Toledo Josselinière, Palatine Baroness of St John of Latran

The champion of the Baroness Palatine rides fiercely against his opponent, the blow of his lance knocks the Cardinal's champion off balance, but it is finally Runy who achieves his goal.

By the fall of his opponent, Runy of Caelus is declared the winner.

Citation:

    VS
Gonzalvo de Cordova, as champion of His Eminence Roderic d'Aleixar Batista, Cardinal Diacon of San Possidonio de Montserrat
    VS
Idril de Dénéré-Sparte Aleïeva, Viscountess of Caprarola

Last bout, the referee checks the positions of the competitors. Idril hits Gonzalvo with great force, injuring his shoulder but not knocking him down, while the Cardinal's champion only breaks his lance. In the second bout, this same result is repeated; the referee signals that there is still no winner and for both to return to their places. At the last second, Idril knocks Gonzalvo de Cordova off balance, who, tired and unable to respond, falls to the ground like a bundle.

By fall of her opponent, Idril de Dénéré-Sparte Aleïeva is declared the winner.
