-----Not sure at all of what he was going to do, Laodin came to the reception of the Holy Office, a light file under the arm. Everything was telling him to go back and return at least the next year, but he also had the feeling it would leave him with some regrets. Thus he waited, almost too patient to really hope for someone to appear...

    Candidacy to be a Writer

    Name: Laodin
    Nationality: French
Current office within the Church: Bishop of Montélimar (since 27th March 1470), teacher in the Saint-Benoît seminary (since 4th January 1471)
Date of baptism: 12th November 1464 (see below)
Date of ordination: 24th November 1464 (see below)

    Motivations:

Is it the right time to come here? I ignore it, but nevertheless it seems I cannot delay anymore. I could have waited to be more qualified, more prepared, more mature in spirit; but I would probably be dead before declaring myself satisfied. I assume having two functional wings is enough to fly to the heights, or at least try to do it.

Since the beginning of my career, I always knew the congregation I would mostly like to join would be the Holy Office, even though I did not know if I would be able to, and above all worthy of it. My passion for the Dogma is intense, if I can say so, and as I consult it everyday for my teachings and personal need, I believe myself to be quite familiarized to it. It does not mean I have no weakness nor progress to make in that matter, and I am more than aware of the margin that remains for me to reach. Yes, this candidacy is written in pure honesty, I shall not disguise the truth for the hope of increasing my chances. My respect for the Holy Office is too high to lie by omission; I prefer to be rejected than accepted for the wrong reasons. The Holy Office is indeed sacred and its task immense, so I would not dare to mock its legacy. The only thing I will tell is I already kind of serve it by defending its integrity, like other servants of the Most High who share the same conviction as mine. I think contributing to add texts to the Dogma is a privilege, while explaining the Dogma without contradicting it is a common duty. So, accepted or not, I shall continue to work for our survival with my limited capacities.

Of course, because it would be pointless for me to come otherwise, I have some ideas of texts to write: for instance, I would like to write the hagiographies of Anthony of Padua and Constantine the First, but also about the History of the Aristotelian Church which only contains for the moment The Council of Nicaea. I do not know if these ideas of texts could be well received, but I have to mention some of them just in case. As I say, honesty is the best way to avoid misunderstandings, although even that is not guaranteed. If possible, I would prefer to write my texts in my native French for comfort - otherwise, I shall try in English with the vocabulary I know. No matter what happens, I will always do my best and be as available for the Holy Office as it is necessary. I am often busy with my other responsibilities and I do not have the reactivity some of our fellows have, but you can count on me to make as many efforts as needed.

I am not the strongest minded, the best scholar or whatever else, so I will not pretend any of this. I am quite average in many aspects, but willingful, and respectful of the Church. In one year, I probably shall be wiser than now, and the year after too; however, taking more time is not always the most profitable option, so here I am, not in the best condition but with the best intentions. Aristotle once said: « The ignorant man affirms, the scientist doubts, the wise man reflects » (The Nicomachean Ethics), so I never affirm something that is not written in the Dogma and I often doubt about my real knowledge of the world - not my faith. I have the feeling I can learn a lot of things, and I am not at all at the peak of my spirtual potential. The best scenario would have been to give my candidacy for the Holy Office when I am much older, but the circumstances are what they are... To be perfectly honest like I was since the beginning, I feel intimidated and very little here. I try to reassurate myself by remembering how it also was the first time I became a bishop, and how I consider it now to be a perfectly surmontable responsibility. I am very careful in everything I do, sometimes too careful, because having an analytic mind is the best way to overcome unfortunate consequences. There is a balance I still have to find between Faith and Reason, which I try to get day after day.

My understanding of our cause is in constant progress and I am more than reluctant to take risks if I am not sure of my chances of success, which can sometimes annoy my peers. For the rest, I never doubted the Dogma, the Holy Office or anything related: I have thought and meditated so much about these questions noone could make me doubt about the teachings of Aristotle and Christos, or the prevalence of our Church. My preoccupation now is to understand them even deeper, to explore new layers of understanding. Theology is my vocation, and it seems I never will have enough of one life to master it like in my dreams. Is my actual knowledge sufficient to accept me in the Holy Office? Have I the required profile? We shall see. I made the first step - well, second -, now it remains to be seen if my foot was wrongly placed and if I am going to fall to the ground. It would not be the first time in a non-metaphorical sense, however.
