After a long and emotional procession through the streets of Rome, the Basilica welcomed the funeral cortege as they passed through the great doors and were received by Cardinal Roderic, who recited the responsory for Arduino. Felipe stepped aside to make way for the coffin and then, along with the rest of the clergy, walked peacefully and slowly through the great basilica nave.

Many times the life and priestly path of Augustine was deeply connected with Cardinal Arduino. The cardinal was the man who was his godfather at the baptism in Fornovo Abbey, the cardinal guided him and gave him a recommendation for further studies. It is the cardinal who anointed him with the sacrament of the priestly order and finally he is the one who elevated and blessed him as a Bishop. Arduino helped him many times on his way, Augustine learned a lot from the cardinal and will probably always be one of his role models how priest must to act.

All these thoughts flowed through his head as he approached the coffin, while he inserted a few gold and silver coins for the most vulnerable.

The Basilica bells continued to ring. Adonnis followed the procession until it reached the Basilica of St. Titus. His clear eyes, normally shone like glass, but it seemed that on this occasion the very brightness of his eyes had been extinguished. The loss was great and the feeling of pain indescribable. Silently he followed each of those present as they placed offerings to be distributed to the poorest.

Then the Cardinal took his place as he bowed his head before the most sacred place in the church.

At the beginning of the Mass, the choir began by singing the Introit for the funeral mass:

The cardinal, turned towards the altar and with his back to the faithful, stands in the centre in front of the lowest tier, makes the sign of the cross and prays alternately with the acolyte in a low voice:

Adonnis then clasps his hands on his chest and begins the antiphon:

Before incensing, the officiant, in honour of God and the two Prophets, puts incense three times into the fire of the censer, and blesses it by making the sign of the Cross. Then he incenses first the Cross of the altar, then the relics and then the altar itself. The assistant then incenses the cardinal three times, because he represents the Prophets and is the Minister of God.

When all were in their places, Cardinal Adonnis, as chief celebrant, began the liturgy. Felipe, standing at one side of the altar, responded as did the rest of the faithful after the singing of the introit.

Then they all prayed the confiteor, that is, the confession of sins and faults and the supplication that the prophets and saints would intercede for them, the sinners, before the benevolence of God.

As it was the season of Lent, hallelujah was not sung, and after three prayers, Krasoljub realized that it was time for him to join the mass celebration. Krasoljub served this mass as a deacon and together with the subdeacon he approached Cardinal Addonis to bless the incense as he had done before; Then Krasoljub takes from the Altar the Book of Virtues, kneels down and asks the Cardinal for a blessing, saying: - Jube, domine, benedícere. Then Adonnis replies with devotion and tenderness:- Dóminus sit in corde tuo et in lábiis tuis, ut digne et competénter annúnties Librum Virtútum. Amen

Having received the blessing, Krasoljub kisses the celebrant's hand, and with the other ministers, having the incense and candles, they approach the ambo. Krasoljub, with joined hands, says: - Lectio Libri Præhistóriæ. Si elle n'avait que peu connu le Cardinal, elle lui vouait un grand respect. Lorsqu'elle avait appris son décès, elle l'avait vécu comme une grande perte pas seulement pour elle mais pour toute la famille aristotélicienne.
Discrète, elle était entrée dans la Basilique et s'était assise parmi les nombreux fidèles venus assister aux funérailles du Cardinal. Là, parmi ses frères et soeurs, elle priait portée par la dévotion de l'assemblée.

L'archevêque d'Arles avait toujours conçu les funérailles comme l'avait décrit Oane : un passage vers un autre monde. Si il était triste de savoir que Gropius avait quitté le monde terrestre, il savait que le primat qui l'avait accompagné et lui avait permis de comprendre certaines choses, avait gagné la vie éternelle. Leur relation était restée professionnelle, néanmoins, Urbain avait eu une bonne impression du cardinal Della Scala.

Aujourd'hui, le temps était venu de lui rendre hommage et de l'accompagner dignement dans son voyage vers le Paradis Solaire, nouveau lieu de villégiature, cela ne faisait presque aucun doute dans l'esprit du Lorrain. Il s'était rendu au Palais Della Scala et avait retrouvé ses collègues, des connaissances et avait respecté les prières des moines déjà présents. Il observa le visage paisible du cardinal, pâle, sans expression, saisit pour l'éternité comme plongé dans un profond sommeil. Urbain réussirait cependant à garder une image plus vivante du cardinal dans sa mémoire.

Lorsque Felipe commença, Urbain l'écouta et se plia aux réponses connues et demandées, priant avec douceur. Il suivit le cortège jusqu'à la basilique Saint Titus et, là-bas, continua la cérémonie suivant Roderic. Lors du temps des offrandes, Urbain s'approcha, avec son secrétaire Géronte, et glissa dans le panier une croix aristotélicienne en or incrustée de quatre pierres, pour chaque extrémité. Il ne prit pas la parole, mais souhaita au cardinal de trouver la Paix et l'Amour. Peut-être retrouverait-il avec lui des amis de longue date ou de la famille qu'il avait aimé.

La messe débuta et il respecta les prières liturgiques une nouvelle fois.

Desde el lugar más cercano que el anciano Campeador había podido ocupar dentro de la Basílica de san Tito, por detrás de los familiares, amigos y gente muy próxima al difunto Cardenal, presenciaba la misa en su honor. Lamentaba no poder ir al velatorio y dedicarle unas oraciones en el Palacio Della Scala, y seguir en procesión por las calles de Roma con el traslado del cuerpo a la gran Basílica para la misa, sus piernas ya no aguantaban mucho tiempo de pie y prefirió ir directo a la Basílica.

No dejaba de sorprenderle y se emocionaba al ver a todos los cardenales oficiar la misa, todos vestidos de rojo en solemne armonía junto al féretro y caminar sobre el altar para despedir a su compañero en el ultimo viaje al paraíso Solar. Impresionado ante aquella imagen el anciano admiraba más todavía la ceremonia y el trabajo que se hacia desde Roma por seguir los pasos y la palabra de Cristo y Aristóteles.

Se percató que la misa era en latín, no lograba recordar si en su juventud había presenciado alguna misa íntegramente en latín, pero de nuevo aquel detalle hizo que el Viejo Dragón se enterneciese de nuevo.

- Amen. Siguió la misa y respondió al mismo tiempo que el resto de los presentes antes de escuchar la lectura del texto entre Aristóteles y Epimano.
