Les premiers jours du printemps portaient souvent en eux la promesse de recommencements. Sur la route qui les menait à Rome, les émeraudes de Piscalie suivaient, songeuses, les paysages ensoleillés qui défilaient. Quinze années… Ce chapitre‑là avait duré plus de quinze ans et n'aurait jamais dû avoir une fin. Un bref flottement la saisit, suspendu entre nostalgie et ce sentiment d'avoir échoué, avant que son regard n’abandonne l’horizon pour se poser sur son époux, Ascalon, assis à ses côtés dans leur voiture familiale.

Les sensations étaient étranges, presque contradictoires, malgré la douceur rassurante des rayons du soleil qui les enveloppaient. Leurs projets avaient été beaux, leur amour solide, leur complicité indéfectible. Un sourire lui échappa, peut‑être un peu incongru au vu des circonstances, mais profondément sincère. Cela leur ressemblait. Malgré les distances, malgré les épreuves, ils avaient toujours été présents l’un pour l’autre. Une alliance ne changerait rien à cette vérité‑là.

Après de longues heures de route, ils atteignirent enfin Rome et se frayèrent un chemin, non sans difficulté, jusqu’au Tribunal Rotae Romanae, où ils se présentèrent pour l’audience.

The first days of spring often carried within them the promise of new beginnings. On the road leading them to Rome, Piscalie’s emerald eyes followed the sunlit landscapes drifting by, lost in thought. Fifteen years… That chapter had lasted more than fifteen years, and it should never have had an end. A brief shiver passed through her, suspended between nostalgia and the sting of failure, before her gaze left the horizon to rest on her husband, Ascalon, seated beside her in their family carriage.

The sensations were strange, almost contradictory, despite the reassuring warmth of the sun’s rays wrapping around them. Their plans had been beautiful, their love steady, their bond unshakeable. A smile escaped her—perhaps a little out of place given the circumstances, yet deeply sincere. It suited them. Despite the distance, despite the trials, they had always been there for one another. A ring would not change that truth.

After long hours on the road, they finally reached Rome and made their way, not without difficulty, to the Tribunal Rotae Romanae, where they presented themselves for the hearing.

Une fois présente, il fallait assumer. Prendre le pli, avancer.
Au mot du serviteur, Piscalie échange un bref regard avec Ascalon, puis s’engouffre dans le Tribunal. Une première, la Chancelier en France était simple requérante, ici.

Honourable judges, we are gathered in this courtroom today to discuss the dissolution of the marriage between Ser Ascalon Breydel and Lady Piscalie van Lauw-Breydel.

The petition for dissolution was received by our offices from the wife on 17 March 1474, in which she requested the dissolution of the marriage contracted in October 1456 and solemnised by Mother Séphora. The petition was submitted by the wife on the grounds of the disappearance of romantic feelings between them, as detailed in the petition for dissolution.

Both spouses are in their first marriage.

Three children were born of the marriage.

Onorevoli giudici oggi siamo in questa aula per discutere dello scioglimento tra Ser Ascalon Breydel e Dama Piscalie van Lauw-Breydel.

La richiesta di scioglimento è pervenuta presso i nostri uffici dalla sposa in data 17 marzo 1474 con la quale richiedeva lo scioglimento del matrimonio contratto ad ottobre 1456 celebrato da Madre Séphora. La richiesta è stata presentata dalla sposa per la sparizione dei sentimenti amorosi tra di loro come indicato dettagliatamente dalla domanda di scioglimento.

Entrambi gli sposi sono al loro primo matrimonio.

Dal matrimonio sono nati 3 figli.

Le couple était venu des terres de Flandres pour cette nouvelle étape, pour ce nouveau moment partagée, complice, comme il y a de cela plusieurs années. Mais ce moment là aurait une autre saveur, un autre goût, mais encore un moment ensemble, Piscalie et Ascalon.

Une fois dans la salle du Tribunal, Ascalon écouta attentivement le discours qui était prononcé. Il ne savait pas comment cette audience allait se dérouler. L'inconnu le plus total devant lui, mais dans tous les sens du terme.

The couple had come from the lands of Flanders for this new stage, for this new shared moment, complicit, as it was several years ago. But that moment would have another flavor, another taste, but still a moment together, Piscalie and Ascalon.

Once in the courtroom, Ascalon listened attentively to the speech that was given. He didn’t know how this hearing was going to unfold. The total stranger in front of him, but in every sense of the word.

Piscalie comprend que la parole lui est offerte. Étrangement, elle n’avait rien préparé, bien qu’elle connaisse parfaitement le déroulement d’une audience.


- Messieurs les juges… Nous nous sommes rencontrés en 55, à Anvers, notre ville natale. À l’époque, Ascalon était capitaine de soule. Nous nous sommes mariés l’année suivante. Il fut mon premier amour… l’amour d’une vie. Nous avons eu des triplés, aujourd’hui âgés de quinze ans, élevés dans la foi aristotélicienne. Ils demeurent, quoi qu’il advienne, notre plus beau projet.

Si notre complicité est intacte, si nous savons encore compter l’un sur l’autre, force est de constater que le temps, le silence, a transformé notre amour. Par honnêteté devant le Très-Haut, la pureté de notre lien demeure… mais les sentiments amoureux, eux, se sont transformés.


Un souffle la traverse. Le vent du Nord, témoin muet, ne dit mot et se tait. Emue.

- Your Honours… We met in ’55, in Antwerp, our native city. At the time, Ascalon was captain of soule. We married the following year. He was my first love… the love of a lifetime. We had triplets, now fifteen years old, raised in the Aristotelian faith. Whatever happens, they remain our finest accomplishment.

If our complicity is intact, if we can still rely on one another, it is nonetheless clear that time has transformed our love. Out of honesty before the Most High, the purity of our bond endures… but the feelings of love themselves have changed.


A breath moves through her. The North wind, a silent witness, says nothing and falls still. Visibly moved.
