« – I agree with His Eminence Kalixtus on the role of priests in the city: they must be active, and even play the leading role. We are the philosophers, the only ones legitimate to lead the community towards prosperity and God's grace.

As for the war, there has been violent fighting recently. The imperial armies finally surrounded the Swiss armies around Grandson. The latter narrowly missed escaping by beating on Makcimus' army, which miraculously survived. One of the two Swiss armies was destroyed last night, and the other is expected to be destroyed tonight.

There are rumblings in the Empire, particularly against the Imperial General Staff, which has handled the mobilisation disastrously. Talliaz's White army came close to being destroyed because he received no reinforcements from the Empire, even though he had soldiers nearby; and Makcimus's army almost suffered the same fate because of a lack of reinforcements.

What happened next remains uncertain. The heretics are threatening to continue pillaging and attacking, while rumours are circulating that the Empire may attack the cantons responsible, Geneva among them. It remains to be seen.

Confidence in the Empire and its ability to protect remained eroded, and prestigious and very loyal generals openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the Imperial General Staff's management of the war. It's a bit sad that we don't seem to be able to take advantage of it politically. The absence of the Church on the ground in this war is noticeable, especially as we see the Empire defending our dioceses, even though it initially failed to protect them. »

« – The two Swiss armies were defeated. However, an army of the Clair Obscur - a brigand organisation - left Berry to attack the Holy Roman Empire in support of the Swiss. It was around Nevers last night.

Several dioceses are potentially in its way, and I don't know where it's due to arrive. Perhaps Savoie, according to some information. »

It seems that my predictions are - once again - coming true. The good ones, but also the bad ones, or let's say the embarrassing ones.

Thank you for the update from the front and I confirm this news.

As usual, I have ended up skipping some interventions when it comes to the typical infighting. On the other hand, I know that our troop system needs to be improved for proper mobilisation and I am not going to enter into discussions on whether or not we should intervene militarily.

On the diplomatic rapprochement to improve relations between Rome and the Empire, it certainly seems to me that we have been slow to touch on the subject.

On the other hand, although we have not been able to mobilise troops adequately but there are Duchies that have supported the Church and taken back dioceses, as well as providing soldiers. Couldn't we consider helping them financially to support the troops? I know that money accumulates in many dioceses and honestly, little movement is given to the church. So why not use it to help the Duchies that favour us?

This is a very sensitive subject.

Let us start with a consideration: the people, the brigands and many secular rulers tell tales of extraordinary ecclesiastical riches, considered ‘useless’.
From various directions I am asked to insert pecuniary clauses in concordats, but if we are not prudent and careful enough, the demands made on us will be incompatible with Canon Law and our intrinsic nature.

We cannot have stable armies and we cannot finance wars. We can only act defensively, to protect the dioceses.

It is true that dioceses and parishes are in the territories and cities governed by the laity, but if lay armies have different purposes from ours, we must not give them Church money.

It is our task to explain this absolutely clearly, and to act in accordance with our duties. The greed of secular rulers must not condition us.

"I also apologize here for the long absence but I have been detained in matters "out of this world"... I have read the last things carefully. In the meantime I have received news that these brigands are descending towards Italian lands, in particular towards Como, perhaps Card. Pamelita can give us more certain news while we all remain alert.

However, in this discussion which concerns both the diplomatic and the military sphere, I note with great dismay and regret that Cardinal Connestabile did not have the time, or the interest, to make any intervention. As strong as his voice was in the Anjou affair, so strong is his silence in these facts which in any case concern an attack against the Holy Church. I would like him to make himself heard and give the opinion of his Congregation on these matters which are not closed but still ongoing."

As our Dean said, one of the armies arrived yesterday between Como and Milan.

The duchy immediately alerted its armies and warned me of the danger.

Fortunately for us, nothing happened last night even though I had warned my bishops of the danger, it seems that the army of assailants is not interested in attacking the dioceses or the municipalities for the moment.

However, I will keep you informed in case anything happens.
