The Hall that would showcase the portraits of the men and women who daily guide and safeguard the Holy Church, was ready for the exhibition. The staff of the Museums had work hard to bring to life this project, and many artists had joined them on this quest to celebrate the life and role of these servants of the Lord.
The black, white and red marble on the floor, united with a
subdued lighting had to give a sense of mystique to he hall, while the dark ebony carved chairs and benches helped the mind of the observer to be focused uniquely on the portrait walls.
Monsignor Ferecide opened slowly the large doors, the time was right, the exhibition could begin.

_________________

Lawley arrived as the great doors of the Hall stood open, the first guests beginning to gather within. The quiet atmosphere of the place struck him at once. His eyes soon found Monsignor Ferecide.
He approached with measured steps and inclined his head in a respectful greeting, though there was a hint of familiarity in his expression.
“Your Excellency,” he said softly, “it is good to see you.”
“This place already speaks, even before the exhibition begins. You have done something meaningful here.”
He did not linger long, aware of the moment and of the guests arriving. With another small nod, he stepped aside, taking his place among those present. _________________

She reached the grand hall where the exhibition was to be held
The mystical and sacred atmosphere instilled a sense of peace
She was excited to be able to admire all the works that were soon to be on display,
having entered the competition herself.
Walking slowly down the corridor with her eyes cast upwards, she waited for the exhibition to begin |

A new exhibition was opening its doors in those grand, sacred halls.
The Countess of Massa Marittima was determined not to miss this event either, fully aware of the cultural significance that this work would hold in the years to come.
She felt fortunate to be able to witness such masterful artistry; delighted to be there, she immersed herself in the intimate, quiet atmosphere, fully captivated by the charm of the art on display. _________________

Felipe... Cardinal

It was generally considered rather bad manners to turn up somewhere uninvited. Then again, no one had told him that the opening of the new gallery in the Roman museums was a private affair. It would not have been the first time Felipe had slipped quietly into some Roman gathering, although in those halls there would obviously be no wine, no limoncello, nor any of the usual delicacies of Romagna. In any case, this was a new permanent exhibition of portraits of the Curia, so he, of all people, would hardly seem out of place; indeed, if he stood perfectly still, he might even be mistaken for a hyper-realistic statue.
The young cardinal shrugged, mulling over these thoughts, and continued strolling along the long, marble-lined corridors leading to the Vatican Museums. He felt he deserved a rest after an especially exhausting day fulfilling his duties as a man in red, followed by Vespers at a side altar of Saint Titus, and then yet another attempt to coax the Sistine choir into singing in unison—and in tune.
Upon entering the room, the young French-Spaniard felt a curious sensation as he found himself surrounded by so many portraits of cardinals who seemed to be watching him: some stern-faced, others deep in thought, and others absorbed in a book or idly stroking hunting birds. Well, yes, very fine indeed. And yet those venerable gazes seemed to be judging him: "you, so young, and you think you know everything".
Of course, he was not alone; there were a few unfamiliar faces about. He greeted them discreetly, careful not to distract them from their contemplation of the artwork, except for Monsignor Neirin, to whom he offered a smile and a nod. It was pleasant to see him even outside the weighty debates of the French Episcopal Assembly.
At last, at the end of the corridor, he very nearly collided with the architect of it all, Monsignor Ferecide, whom he had never met before. Felipe gestured towards one of the paintings depicting the current pontiff in his days as a cardinal, much younger and wearing a faint smile: — He doesn’t look quite so grumpy in the painting, does he? The artist seems to have forgotten a few wrinkles between the brows.
Then he turned to Ferecide directly. — I must offer you my congratulations, Monsignor; these paintings may well endure for centuries if they are properly preserved here. By the way, I am Cardinal Felipe.
The man in scarlet raised his hand in a brief gesture of blessing. — May I make one request? Do make sure that no one hangs my portrait in this room until I am dead. _________________

Karl reached the exhibition hall.
He was curious and interested in seeing the artworks that would be on display.
He had also contributed portraits of two cardinals; he hoped his creations would be as good as those of the other participating artists.

The air was warm, even though it was only early April; the sun was hot, and strolling along Rome’s tree-lined avenues was very pleasant.
Alexandra walked calmly, savouring every step and breathing in the scent of the blossoming trees.
She was heading for the museums, not without a touch of curiosity, as the portraits of the clergy were on display; she loved art and often lingered in Rome’s churches, admiring the frescoes within them.
As she daydreamed, she realised she had reached her destination and, without hesitation, she walked through the large entrance door.
Inside, there were already quite a few visitors, some of whom she knew well; she greeted them with a smile and, spotting Monsignor Ferecide not far away, she went over to thank him for the invitation.
Dear Monsignor, what a pleasure to see you. I was actually hoping to meet you to thank you in person for the invitation, and I won’t hide the fact that I’m really very curious to see the works... _________________

His Eminence Ettore Asburgo d’Argovia, too, had received the courteous invitation to attend the Roman Museums, and he went there with an embarrassment he could scarcely conceal. Why, you may ask? Well, when he himself held the position now entrusted to Monsignor Buonaguidi De Curtis, he had shown no initiative beyond preserving the works already in the collection, never daring to expand it. A prudence which, on such a public occasion, now weighed on him like an overly stiff mantle.
To an attentive observer, the Cardinal appeared slightly flushed in the cheeks, his pince‑nez tilted toward the tip of his nose, as though he feared the lenses might distort the painted figures or, worse still, hide the truth from his cerulean eyes, each day a little more tired. Yet good manners did not abandon him: he greeted everyone with broad gestures—perhaps a touch too generous—that betrayed a gentle ingenuousness in his bearing and a sincere desire to appear at ease, despite everything. _________________ + Ettore Asburgo D'Argovia

Luna could not be absent. When she received the invitation, she did not hesitate for a moment: her desire to be there stemmed from the sincere esteem and affection she felt for Monsignor Ferecide.
She crossed the threshold shortly after the opening, welcomed by the solemn silence of the Hall. The black, white, and red marble reflected the subdued light, while the hushed atmosphere seemed to suspend time. She moved with discretion, allowing the place to speak for itself, observing every detail with care and respect.
Luna’s presence blended naturally into that setting: she did not seek to stand out, but to take part, to truly be there. When her gaze met that of Monsignor Ferecide, she offered him a gentle nod, filled with gratitude.

_________________

The job of General Secretary was a quite fun one. You can drink all day long limoncello, wander around in the deposits of the Museum and admire all this wonderful work of arts. And if that wasn’t already quite of a good perk, you can also gossip a bit with Ferecide about the newest scandals in the Vatican and Rome, and there were a lot of scandalous gossip about cardinals wearing the wrong shade of red or priests putting secretly limoncello in the wine during the Meal of Friendship.
But well, pretend to work was one thing, but you were regrettably forced to do sometimes real labor like organizing exhibitions…and those were the most dangerous times.
Julian hadn’t any time to get some good running shoes because there was a non-zero chance that Ferecide and he may be very soon forced to run speedily out of Rome, hunted by a horde of infuriated prelates, bruised egos and shattered vanities. The life of a priest involved in arts was probably one of the most deadliest jobs, because you were at the risk of getting excommunicated more quickly that someone could say “FC Valencia”. _________________

-----Following the invitation sent to him by Ferecide, Laodin went to the exhibition that was about to happen. He would not be here for very long, due to a trip he had to make, but he would at least be present at the beginning, discreet but curious. Even if he had previously missed the exhibition entitled "The Life of Aristotle", he had made certain to come and look at the many paintings thereafter, when he was alone. Art was something he cherished a lot, and he remembered when he himself tried to portray various things and people in questionable style.
-----He quickly greeted the Prefect, as Laodin didn't really want to get noticed in this crowd. Of course, he had been contacted a few weeks ago for his agreement to be a part of the exhibition, but it was not a reason to behave like he was the star of the show. Rome, above all, was highlighted here - not him. If the institution was celebrated here as a whole, with no emphasis on personal success, it would justify his passive contribution to it. So, it was better for him to stay back, and enjoy himself while making no noise. _________________

Daniele had returned once again to Rome. That splendid city bathed him in a radiant light he could not quite explain.
It had been a long time since his last visit to the library, and yet he still remembered every single door, perhaps because he had gotten lost more than once back then.
The scent of those halls soothed him; being there made him feel like a different person, calmer, almost brighter. All his troubles, once he stepped into that place, seemed to vanish with the snap of a finger.
He greeted Father Ferecide, who had invited him, and entered the grand hall together with his wife, just as it had opened.
There, he encountered Cardinal Pamelita, another figure very dear to him for the many times she had helped him. The affection he felt for her ran deep; in moments of fragility, Pamelita had always been there to support him. He offered her a reserved smile, not wishing to disturb her.
He moved on, hoping to find Father Silvio as well, whom he had not seen in a very long time. Seeing him again would surely lift his spirits.
He then approached Father Ferecide and gave a slight bow, as a sign of respect both for the place and for the invitation.
“Thank you, Father, for the invitation. At a time like this, I truly needed some peace for the soul.”
Not wanting to take up any more of his time, he stepped aside to make room for the others who were still entering, and waited for the exhibition to begin. |
