Jeremiah the clockmaker appeared for the hearing in Rome.
The journey from Venice to Rome had been far shorter than it would have been from Augsburg, for his army was already stationed in Venice, ready to fight for the Emperor, for the Venetians, and soon thereafter to drive back the godless Turks. The matter that weighed so heavily upon his heart was the death of his wife Rebecca. She had been his first great and only love. They had been married for more than four years and had a daughter together; the little girl had turned three only a few weeks earlier. She missed her mother terribly, yet that was no longer in Jeremiah’s power. God had taken Rebecca from him. At times it was hard for him to believe that God’s plans were truly filled with love. But then again, God had always protected him through every battle and every campaign. He had never had much dealings with churchmen or with Rome itself. Therefore he did not know how he was supposed to behave here. Although he himself was a duke, he was not even certain of the proper etiquette among the nobility, let alone in the presence of the Church.

Honourable judges, we are gathered in this courtroom today to discuss the dissolution of the marriage between Ser Jeremiah and Lady Rebecca.

The request for annulment was received by our offices from the husband on 12 December 1473, in which he sought the annulment of the marriage contracted on 1 March 1470 and solemnised by His Grace Joseph. The request was made on the grounds that the wife had abandoned the marital home for a period exceeding three months.

The messenger attempted to deliver the letter to the bride, but from the outset he had little success. He spoke to acquaintances and to the monks, but she is nowhere to be found. According to some people he spoke to, she has not been seen since June 1472.

A son was born of the marriage.

Onorevoli giudici oggi siamo in questa aula per discutere dello scioglimento tra Ser Jeremiah e Dama Rebecca.

La richiesta di scioglimento è pervenuta presso i nostri uffici dallo sposo in data 12 dicembre 1473 con la quale richiedeva lo scioglimento del matrimonio contratto in data 01 Marzo 1470 celebrato da sua Monsignore Joseph. La richiesta è stata presentata per l'abbondono del tetto coniugale da parte della sposa per un periodo superiore ai 3 mesi.

Il messo ha provato a consegnare la missiva alla sposa, ma già dall'inizio non ha avuto molta fortuna. Ha parlato con conoscenti e con i monaci, ma non risulta da nessuna parte. Secondo alcune persone con cui ha parlato non si vede più da giugno 1472.

Dal matrimonio è nato un figlio.
